DVD To Celebrate Phish's 20th Anniversary

    By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

It has been almost a year since Phish disbanded after a weekend's worth of shows in Coventry, Vt., but several releases are in the works to satiate the band's rabid fan base. Among them is a DVD of a career-spanning film shown at just one concert: the group's 20th anniversary on Dec. 2, 2003, at Boston's FleetCenter.

"It's either funny or memorable moments taken from 2,500 videotapes we've collected," bassist Mike Gordon reveals to Billboard.com of the film, which originally ran about 30 minutes. "The band was going back and forth about whether we wanted to release it. But I'm excited, because we've added about 10 minutes of footage. We'll probably have to subtract because of clearances for appearances and cover songs. Some of them will be impossible to get the rights to for any amount of money."

"There's a great moment where we are playing [Prince's] '1999' and we're being lowered down onto the stage by contortionists dressed up in costume and on stilts," Gordon continues. "[Guitarist] Trey [Anastasio] and I, our bodies are perfectly straight. I don't know how we did it. We eventually were flat on the stage. The groove is a very legitimate version, for us anyway, of a Prince song. It's such a nice moment. But the licensing coordinating company has said there isn't any chance in hell we'll get permission to use it."

The DVD, provisionally named "The 20th Anniversary Video," may arrive in time for Christmas but could be pushed to early next year. And while the film focuses on on-stage moments, there are a handful of behind-the-scenes clips.

"There's a shot of Trey and I on our first tour in Telluride [Colo.] going for a run with our shirts off and our guitars on," Gordon says with a laugh. "There's some footage of us kayaking on the Verde River. But it is mainly special guests and unique moments. One of our worries was that it was too much of the silly stuff, but there are some powerful musical moments."

The band has discussed devoting entire releases to such major festivals as Coventry, but it could be some time before they see the light of day. "Coventry, I think it will happen, but not for years and years," Gordon says. "And [the Millennium New Year festival] Big Cypress, which people are very excited about doing. We want it to be done right, so we're waiting for [Martin] Scorsese or someone to say, I want to put it together [laughs]."

Gordon concedes he knows fans are keeping their fingers crossed that Phish will reunite someday, but says the split "has actually been relatively easy for me. I have dreams where I'm backstage in some exotic place with the band, and it makes me miss the whole deal -- not just the music. Or I hear some of the music on tape and I feel like it's amazing how we still clicked together after all those years. But it's a completely dealable emotion for me.

So, is the door open to collaborate again some day? "I think it's possible," he says. "We haven't discounted it. But on the other hand, there's a big feeling of avoiding the reunion tour that seems to be cheesy in most cases. Maybe in a different format, like recording the music for a film or something. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen, but on the other hand, we stay in touch. And we play and record in pairs. [Drummer Jon Fishman] lives in my town and we really like playing together. There's no excuse not to get together."

  2. In a situation like this it is always difficult to determine what exactly happened.

    Dave Newfeld himself states:

As Newf tells it: "We walk around the corner, and all the sudden I'm tackled in a football style attack, like a mugger would do, you know? You grab the person and catch them by surprise and they ambush in a football tackle. And then they're like, 'Police, police, police! Fucking put your hands behind you!'" Due to the lax drug laws in Canada, Newfeld says he didn't connect what he assumed to be a mugging with his schwag score, assuming the "police" claim was a ploy by thugs to keep their victims passive for an easy stick-up.

"They started punching me in the face and beating the shit out of me and throwing me on the ground, so I'm trying to get away-- not fight them back, because I'm not capable of that, but just to escape. And then they threatened to break my hand and I'm like, "No, don't break my hand! I'm a musician. I gotta fuckin' play tomorrow! And so I'm really freaking out, and at that point I thought, 'Just take my wallet, whatever. Don't break my hand. My wallet's not worth it.'" By now, Newfeld's pal was cuffed on the ground, and finally decided it was time to break the news: "They're cops! Submit!" Oh, and P.S., whoops!

I do not know what Dave means by "just to escape" but if he hit a cop after they have already said to him "Police" three times, then he is going to be in big trouble and will likely lose his case against the New York City Police.

New York City is a crazy place and the police there put their lives at risk everyday. Now I'm not saying that what the police did to Dave Newfeld was necessarily justifiable, but only those cops and Dave know what he tried to do to get away from them. Even if you hit a cop once, you shouldn't expect to come out unscathed. And in NYC if you hit a cop you should be thankful that you can even walk away from the incident.

  3. first, in response to Hamilton, I see your point, there are better ways to advertise on here and if people have specifically asked to not receive emails, and if they did not ask to receive emails, it should not be their responsibility to stop them.

And my response to Timmy B is U2 sucks!!!

    kidding---I couldn't help myself.

Didn't you notice on the list of artists I put on my reply Bono, the Edge, Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton were not on that list. I just figured there would be a response to them being on the list, instead I get a response anyway!

It's okay to each there own I guess, but if someone told the Edge that he sucked for sending people SPAM I'm sure he would know that he doesn't but would be kind enough to remove them from his list of emails.

  4. ....an artist's temperament is a sensitive one and a difficult path to walk so discouraging words can create cynicism and impede creativity...is that what people want?

I have not been apart of this nice discussion, but this above quote has forced my hand to join in.

I'm an autoworker and I do my job to the best of my ability. So I would say that I'm a good autoworker, not that it is hard.

If someone came up to me and said you suck as an autoworker, I would laugh at them and say they are wrong.

If some people came up to Bob Dylan and said you suck as a musician, I'm sure Bob Dylan would laugh and think to himself they are wrong.

What I'm rambling on about is, if you're an artist then a few "discouraging words" from some people on a messageboard or anywhere else for that matter, shouldn't "create cynicism and impede creativity."

You are what you are, and if that is a musician then sooner or later your time will come. If it doesn't then you weren't much of a musician were you?

I'm a big believer that if someone out there is as talented as say, Robert Johnson or Woody Guthrie or Johnny Cash or Miles Davis or Marvin Gaye or Mick Jagger or Joni Mitchell or Keith Moon or Bruce Springsteen or Patti Smith or Michael Stipe or Thom Yorke or Jeff Tweedy, well you get the picture... Sooner or later some people, maybe even a lot of people, will hear about them and know what songs they sing and what albums they have done.

Possibly a lot of people told them they sucked at one point or another, but it probably didn't "impede" their creativity as evidence to the wealth of music the aforementioned artists have compiled.

  5. NYC gets all the shows!

Calexico, Iron & Wine Preview EP In New York

    By Michael D. Ayers, N.Y.

Calexico gave fans a taste of its upcoming EP with Iron & Wine last night (July 14) during a free show in New York's Battery Park. At the end of its set, the group invited Iron & Wine mastermind Sam Beam on stage to debut the songs "He Lays in the Reins" and "Prison on Route 41" from "In the Reins," due Sept. 20 via Overcoat Recordings.

The artist's collaborative tour in support of the EP will begin on the West Coast in October and hit the East Coast by mid-November. Both bands will play full sets, then team for a set with each other. "We're going to bring along several guests this fall, including jugglers and fire-eaters," Calexico's Joey Burns joked.

As previously reported, Calexico has already recorded some material for its next Touch & Go album, which should be out by next spring. Several new tunes were played last night, including "All Systems Red" and "Bisbee Blue."

The group has three songs on the soundtrack to the new Don Roos film "Happy Endings," which also includes actress Maggie Gyllenhaal's rendition of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are." The set is due Aug. 2 via Commotion.

  6. Today was Woody Guthrie was born back in 1912. Guthrie to me was one of the greatest citizens this world has ever known.

May you rest in peace Woody.

I hope Bruce Springsteen plays a Woody Guthrie song tonight at the Air Canada Centre to celebrate Woody.

THIS DAY IN MUSIC For July 14, 2005.

1912 - Folk singer Woody Guthrie (Woodrow Wilson Guthrie) is born. Guthrie's 1947 recording of "This Land Is Your Land" receives a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1990.

This is what Bruce Springsteen performed in Ottawa last night. If I don't get "Highway Patrolman" tonight in Toronto, I'll regret not going to Ottawa to see this show for a long time.

    Setlists: 2005

July 13 / Ottawa, ON / Corel Centre

Notes: Bruce gets back to business after a three-week break, bringing the tour back to North America with its first concert across the border in Canada. And an electrifying show it was, as a lightning strike caused a power outtage in the middle of the set. After "Reno," the stage went dark: "I can't see a goddamn thing... I need lights!" Bruce said -- "I'm good, but I'm not that good." Lights restored, he noted that the next song might be apropos: "I Wish I Were Blind." Later in the show, Springsteen figured out and told the crowd what happened. "We had a good night: the lights went out, the lights came on, the lights went out, we got struck by lightning!" The setlist itself might not have been, er, shocking, but Bruce brought a couple songs back from Europe for their first North American airing on this tour ("I Wish I Were Blind" and "Spare Parts"), with "Tougher," "All the Way Home," "Highway Patrolman," and "Racing in the Street" also in the set.

    Setlist: My Beautiful Reward*/Reason to Believe/Devils & Dust/Lonesome Day/Long Time Comin'/Silver Palomino/Tougher Than the Rest*/The River*/Part Man, Part Monkey/All the Way Home/Highway Patrolman/Reno/I Wish I Were Blind***-*/Racing in the Street*/The Rising/Spare Parts/Jesus Was an Only Son*/This Hard Land/The Hitter/Matamoros Banks//Ramrod/Bobby Jean/The Promised Land/Dream Baby Dream**

  8. Too bad know one knew to tell Umph to play YYZ, they must be out of practise on it. Looks pretty damn good though. I missed another fine cheese show.

The first time I saw Umphrey's McGee at the first bonnaroo they performed Rush's "YYZ," it felt like a bit of home down in Manchester, TN.

  9. Congratulations!

May God bless and keep you always,

May your wishes all come true,

May you always do for others

And let others do for you.

May you build a ladder to the stars

    And climb on every rung,

    May you stay forever young,

    Forever young, forever young,

    May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,

May you grow up to be true,

May you always know the truth

And see the lights surrounding you.

    May you always be courageous,

    Stand upright and be strong,

    May you stay forever young,

    Forever young, forever young,

    May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,

May your feet always be swift,

May you have a strong foundation

When the winds of changes shift.

May your heart always be joyful,

May your song always be sung,

    May you stay forever young,

    Forever young, forever young,

    May you stay forever young.

Dylan Offers Rarities Bonanza On 'No Direction'

    By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

More than two-dozen previously unreleased tracks will be found on "No Direction Home: The Soundtrack," the seventh volume in Columbia/Legacy's Bob Dylan "Bootleg Series." As previously reported, the double-disc set is the companion to Martin Scorsese's Dylan documentary of the same name. The album is due Aug. 30; the film premieres Sept. 26 on PBS.

Sequenced in chronological order, "No Direction Home" boasts 26 rarities, beginning with what is believed to be a recording of the first original song Dylan ever recorded ("When I Got Troubles," taped by a high school friend in Minnesota in 1959).

Also featured are two tracks recorded in Minneapolis in December 1961, a live version of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" from a 1961 show at New York's Carnegie Hall that was previously not known to exist and alternate takes of "Mr. Tambourine Man," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and "She Belongs to Me" from the 1964-65 "Bringing It All Back Home" sessions.

The album's second disc sports five alternate takes from the 1965 sessions for "Highway 61 Revisited" and three from the following year's "Blonde on Blonde," plus live versions of "Ballad of a Thin Man" and "Like a Rolling Stone" from Dylan's 1966 U.K. tour.

Liner notes for "No Direction Home" were penned by producer Andrew Loog Oldham and Dylan collaborator Al Kooper, while journalist Eddie Gorodetsky offers track-by-track analysis.

Dylan himself narrates the film version of "No Direction Home," which boasts new interviews with such seminal figures as Joan Baez, Allen Ginsberg, Al Kooper, Pete Seeger and Dave Von Ronk.

On the same day "No Direction Home" hits stores, another Dylan album will begin an 18-month window of exclusivity at Starbucks locations. "Bob Dylan: Live at the Gaslight 1962" features restored recordings culled from the artist's early performances at the New York cafe.

Here is the track list for "No Direction Home":

    Disc one:

    "When I Got Troubles" (1959)

    "Rambler, Gambler" (1960)

"This Land Is Your Land" (live at New York's Carnegie Chapter Hall, 1961)

    "Song to Woody" (1961)

    "Dink's Song" (1961)

"I Was Young When I Left Home" (1961)

"Sally Gal" ("The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" outtake, 1962)

    "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" (demo, 1963)

    "Man of Constant Sorrow" (1963)

"Blowin' in the Wind" (live at New York's Town Hall, 1963)

"Masters of War" (live at New York's Town Hall, 1963)

    "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" (live at New York's Carnegie Hall, 1963)

"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" ("Bringing It All Back Home" alternate take, 1965)

    Disc two:

"She Belongs To Me" (“Bringing It All Back Home" alternate take, 1965)

"Maggie's Farm" (live at Newport, R.I. Folk Festival, 1965)

"It's Take a Lot To Laugh, It Takes a Train To Cry" ("Highway 61 Revisited" alternate take, 1965)

"Tombstone Blues" ("Highway 61 Revisited" alternate take, 1965)

"Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" ("Highway 61 Revisited" alternate take, 1965)

"Desolation Row" ("Highway 61 Revisited" alternate take, 1965)

Keep it Simple (w/ Kris Myers from UM)' date=' Dogs, Kielbasa Sausage (Tenacious D, add/ Brendan Bayliss from UM), Trenchtown Rock (add rest of Umphrey’s – Jake Cinninger, Joel Cummins, Ryan Stasik, Andy Farag), Long View (Green Day), Black Water, Galavanting, More than a little, Fly like an Eagle (Steve Miller Band), We Want the Funk (Parliament)[/quote']

I was on the patio for a bit, and walked in during Trenchtown Rock. That 'Dogs', that's not PF's Dogs from Animals is it? If so, I will shoot myself now. I can't believe I missed it if that's what it was...holy fuck. Can anyone confirm?

    Hey TheGoodRev,

No it was not Pink Floyd's "Dogs."

It was good to see you yesterday, quite the day of music. From Stage 1 to Stage 2 the music being performed was almost seamless.

  12. Happy 63rd Birthday Roger,

May you have many, many more in health and happiness.

    Tim

I saw Roger McGuinn this year on April 22nd. Preping for the show listening to all of the albums I have of his, I noticed that "Chimes of Freedom" was recorded by the Byrds on April 22, 1965. So the gig that I was attending was actually the 40th anniversary of the recording of the Dylan song by the Byrds.

Before the gig I told Roger's wife Camilla McGuinn at the CD table of the anniversary and she said she would let Roger know. I also requested if Roger could perform "King of the Hill," the McGuinn/Tom Petty song that appeared on his 'Back From Rio' comeback album in the early nineties. As I love the song and Roger didn't perform the song the last time I saw him live. Camilla nicely replied that Roger takes care to sort out his set, which seemed like a nice way to say that he doesn't take requests.

During the gig, Roger did do "King of the Hill," which I took as a coincidence. But in the encore Roger introduced the next song by saying "It was brought to my attention that I recorded this next song with a few people in a small studio, forty years ago to the day." McGuinn then performed "Chimes of Freedom." Which made me think that Camilla also asked him to perform "King of the Hill" for me as well. It was a great night and I hope to see Roger again one day soon.

  19. Looks like Wilco is on the bill, which is a big plus for me. Wilco were at my first Farm Aid in 1998 at the same venue as this year as well as Phish, it was still my favorite of the six I have attended.

Hopefully this year being the twentieth anniversary can match it or even surpass it.

Farm Aid returns to Chicago to celebrate 20th anniversary

    By Greg Kot

    Tribune music critic

    Published July 11, 2005

Farm Aid will move to Chicago for a weeklong series of events and concerts to mark its 20th anniversary in September, promoters confirmed over the weekend.

The capstone of the celebration will be announced Monday at a news conference in Grant Park: a Sept. 18 concert at Tweeter Center in Tinley Park headlined by festival mainstays Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson and Dave Matthews.

In an interview Saturday, Mellencamp also said that at least one other band has already been confirmed for the lineup. "Wilco is playing," he said.

Tickets for the annual concert, which has helped Farm Aid raise $27 million for family farms, will go on sale July 30 at a still-to-be-determined price. More performers are expected to be announced in coming weeks.

"It's my job to go out and grovel," Mellencamp said with a laugh. "I'm putting together a list of bands and I'll be making some calls."

Organizers also are working with the City of Chicago to plan a series of events in the days preceding the concert. These will include a county fair-style educational event Sept. 17 at Garfield Park Conservatory, and also may include smaller shows by major artists at various clubs, performances at farmers markets, school educational events and a film festival.

"My tour is over the week before Farm Aid, so I may just come up to Chicago and play on the street corner again," said Mellencamp, referring to his free street-busking concert in Daley Plaza in 2000.

The singer said he lobbied to have the 20th anniversary concert in New York because Farm Aid hadn't played there before.

"There was quite a bit of discussion, and to be really honest, Chicago was my second choice," said Mellencamp, who continues to make his home in Indiana. "But everybody else wanted Chicago, because we'd played there before, it had been successful, and the venue is big. I love Chicago. For me, it is home."

Farm Aid rolled out in 1985 with a concert in Champaign, and it is expected that Farm Aid week festivities this year would kick off in the downstate community before moving to Chicago the rest of the week.

"We're coming to Chicago because the city is a shining example of urban commitment to family farming," said Farm Aid's executive director, Carolyn Mugar. Mayor Richard Daley "has shown extraordinary commitment to family farming by creating an infrastructure to support it."

She cited the city's Department of the Environment and ongoing farmers market programming as aiding the Farm Aid cause. "And it'll be nice to bring it full circle because Farm Aid began there [in Illinois] 20 years ago."

Mellencamp said the first Farm Aid began in an atmosphere of "optimism and idealism."

"I had no inkling when we started that we'd be having a 20th anniversary," he said. "We were very excited and thought we were going to be able to correct a lot of things. Now I'm not sure Farm Aid has had any effect on policy, but it has helped a lot of individuals. It's worth doing for that reason."

  20. i'm sure you'll be able to give us a full, detailed report...

    i assume your going again?

I hope that you are assuming correctly.

Though there are a lot of huge concerts this fall like Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and U2. As well as if Cream is coming to MSG in NYC and nowhere else I'll have to go there and I don't know if I can swing both.

Hopefully I'll know the lineup before this Farm Aid goes on sale, as they often just have the above four guys on the bill by the onsale date.
