  1. PS After that Big Sugar opening set at the Molson Amphitheatre' date=' Gordie Johnson has had a nice relationship with Warren Haynes. I remember seeing Gordie come out at two Gov't Mule shows, not including the time Gov't Mule opened for Big Sugar at the Warehouse.[/quote']

...and also, I'm sure, led to Warren playing on the cover of Let It Ride on Big Sugar's Heated album...which I absolutely love. The solo tradeoff at the end is monstrously full of guitar tone.

I love the Bachman-Turner Overdrive song "Let It Ride."

I agree it was great when Warren Haynes helped out Big Sugar in the recording of that BTO song.

  2. The original plan for the archive series was a 28 disc set, comprised of 4 boxed sets of 7 discs each (4 cds and 3 DVDs) ... of course, that was proposed about 8 years ago and there has been no sign since. I'd be happy with just remasters of the original Reprise albums.

    RnB

That is a great idea about Neil Young's Reprise albums getting remastered.

As for the Archives, one can only hope. Either way I'm looking forward to the new album and Farm Aid.

  3. peipunk is right Jaimoe.

The Allman Brothers Band show at the Molson Amphitheatre definitely had Warren Haynes with Dickey Betts on guitar.

I even got Warren's autograph while he was at the soundboard watching Big Sugar set.

Neil Young and Reprise Records Continue Historic Four-Decade

Partnership in One of Music's Most Honored Legacies

New Album "Prairie Wind" Set for September 27th Release

BURBANK, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 08/16/2005 -- Neil Young, who has

created one of the most exciting and groundbreaking musical legacies

in rock & roll history, is continuing his four-decade relationship

with Reprise Records. Young released his first solo album on Reprise

in 1969, and since that time has become known as an inspirational

innovator, both in terms of recordings, live performances and film

endeavors. He is often cited as the artist who leads the way for

others through an uncompromising pursuit of staying true to his music.

Under the terms of the new long-term recording agreement, Reprise will

release multiple new studio albums from the acclaimed

singer-songwriter, beginning with "Prairie Wind" on September 27th.

That album is already being hailed as one of Neil Young's

masterpieces. Starting in 2006, Reprise will also begin an extensive

series of other releases, which will present a treasure trove of

archival material recorded over the past four decades. Working

together with Young, this series will feature a vast number of

unreleased recordings from his entire career, along with long-sought

live recordings and other infamous rarities. The different archive

sets will offer a comprehensive look at every facet in the musical

life of the multiple Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member, and create new

standards for honoring the artist's history, widely seen as one of the

most important and influential in rock & roll.

"I look forward to continuing my partnership with Reprise," says

Young. "We've been through a lot together over the years. When you're

with a company that long, it's like a family. [Warner Bros. CEO] Tom

Whalley really understands musicians and knows how to nurture

creativity. He's not afraid to let artists be artists."

Young first signed with Reprise in 1969 after leaving Buffalo

Springfield. The label has released the outspoken and iconic artist's

most critically and commercially beloved albums, including "Everybody

Knows This Is Nowhere" (1969), "After the Gold Rush" (1970), "Harvest"

(1972), "Rust Never Sleeps" (1979), "Freedom" (1989), and "Harvest

Moon" (1992). "Look at his track record," says Whalley. "Neil is a

relentless musical innovator and visionary, and we can't wait to hear

all the new music he's going to create. To us, Neil Young is a

foundation of what Reprise and Warner Bros. Records are all about, and

we are thrilled to continue our relationship with him into the

    future."

That future includes the September 27th release of "Prairie Wind,"

which was recorded earlier this year in Nashville. In addition to a

single compact disc, the release will also be available in a special

edition that includes the CD along with a DVD in High Resolution DVD

Stereo, with filmed content of the entire recording of the album. The

incredible set of songs is being described as the last installment in

a trilogy of albums that include "Harvest" and "Harvest Moon," and

features the first single, "The Painter," along with "No Wonder,"

"Falling Off The Face Of The Earth," "Far From Home," "It's A Dream,"

"Prairie Wind," "Here For You," "This Old Guitar," "He Was The King"

and "When God Made Me." Young is joined on the album by keyboardist

Spooner Oldham, pedal-steel guitarist Ben Keith, drummer Chad

Cromwell, percussionist Karl Himmel, bassist Rick Rosas and vocalist

Emmylou Harris, along with the Fisk University Jubilee Singers and

    other guests.

Neil Young is performing at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on

August 18th and 19th, to be filmed by Academy Award®-winning director

Jonathan Demme. He is also appearing at the 20th anniversary of Farm

Aid in Chicago on September 18th, an organization he co-founded with

    Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp.

    Neil Young Re-Signs With Reprise

    By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Neil Young has signed a new, multi-album deal with Reprise, which will kick in with the Sept. 27 release of his latest studio set, "Prairie Wind." Young recorded for Reprise from 1969 to 1983 and returned to the label in 1988 after a wildly experimental five-album stint on Geffen.

As previously reported, a major facet of the new deal will be a long-awaited series of archival releases from Young. According to Reprise, the series, which will get underway next year, will feature previously unreleased studio recordings and rarities as well as live material.

"I look forward to continuing my partnership with Reprise," Young said in a statement. "We've been through a lot together over the years. When you're with a company that long, it's like a family.

On Thursday and Friday (Aug. 18-19), Young will perform at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium as part of a concert film directed by Jonathan Demme. The as-yet-untitled project will hit theaters next year via Paramount.

  6. Great review Jaimoe. I too can not believe I heard Chuck Leavell perform those songs last night, especially "Southbound" and "Jessica."

Greg Allman did mention Chuck's name after "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" though much of what Greg said last night was barely audible.

Here is my long and sober review of the show from last night:

PS It was good to see \/\/illy and Marky yesterday, unfortunately I couldn't make it to the pre or post parties so I did not see more of you.

  7. 4. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (A. and with Chuck Leavell on Yamaha electric piano [b.])

Holy fuck - Chuck played with them.....I REALLY HOPE he follows them to London tonight!!!!!!

I kind of doubt that Chuck Leavell will be able to go to the Allman Brothers show in London tonight as the Rolling Stones are about to start their tour in Boston on August 21st. There are rumours that there will be another surprise Stones club gig in Boston and they have to do a couple run throughs on the giant stage before the 21st as well.

Though I hope Chuck does for the sake of all that are attending the London show. Let us know if he does?

  9. Another Allman Brothers Show, Another Lineup Change

With The Big Surprise Of Chuck Leavell Joining In On The Fun

    By Tim Batke

    abb.jpg

    Allman Brothers Band

I was well aware of the fact that Warren Haynes was not going to be on stage at the Molson Amphitheatre as the Allman Brothers official site stated "Warren Haynes will not be able to make the first week of the Allman Brothers tour due to family matters." So this was going to be yet another incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band I was going to see live, with former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Jack Pearson who took Warren's place in the band in 1997 until 1999 and Ron Holloway also helping out on tenor saxophone.

What I did not know walking into the Toronto venue was that former Allman Brothers Band member Chuck Leavell would surprise us by playing with the Allan Brothers Band for the first time since the Beacon run of 2001. Chuck who was apart of Allman Brothers Band in the early seventies and his work with the band was highlighted on their 1973 masterpiece 'Brothers and Sisters.'

Chuck who has been playing keyboards with the Rolling Stones for nearly twenty-five years, has been in Toronto rehearsing for their upcoming tour for the past month plus. The Stones left for Boston on Monday (August 15) which is where they are officially opening their tour (the Stones played a surprise gig in Toronto at the Phoenix on Wednesday August 10, 2005. Review found here on August 21. So it seems luckily for us in Toronto that Chuck got permission from the Glimmer Twins to stay in Toronto an extra day and perform with his old band mates.

Due to Warren's absence, the song selection of the gig was the most nostalgic of an Allman Brothers Band show that I have ever witnessed.

The set focused entirely of material from the Allmans first five albums from 1969 to 1973, minus the John Lee Hooker number "Dimples" sung by Jack Pearson, which Allman Brothers fans can find on the Duane Allman 'An Anthology Volume II' released in 1974. But that is as late of a release as the show went thirty-one years ago.

The Allmans came out on stage at eight-thirty sharp and went right into two numbers from the 1972 album 'Eat A Peach' with the Sonny Boy Williamson song "One Way Out" and then the Greg Allman original "Ain't Wasting Time No More."

The next two songs in a row from the 1970 album 'Idlewild South' the Greg classic "Midnight Rider" and then the Dickey Betts instrumental "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." It was during "Elizabeth Reed" in which Chuck Leavell joined in on a Yamaha electric piano.

After seeing Chuck with the Rolling Stones over the last decade plus it was great to see him on stage with the Allman Brothers Band where he had the room to let loose and solo on the ivory keys, which is something that is not conducive to the Stones material.

The show would continue with a very bluesy feel with songs like "You Don't Love Me," Greg original "Don't Keep Me Wondering," the aforementioned "Dimples" and the Blind Willie McTell number "Statesboro Blues." It seems that the blues numbers were the wisest choice with the situation of Jack taking over for Warren on such short notice.

    //-->

Jack had been in the Allman Brothers Band for over two years in the late nineties, but that was six years ago. It must be pointed out that though every guitarist that has walked on stage with the Allman Brothers Band has been brilliant they still have two very difficult parts to play.

Jack Pearson took over for Warren Haynes in 1997 and at the time Dickey Betts was still in the band. Therefore Jack was playing several of Duane Allman's original guitar parts. With the departure of Jack, Derek Trucks took over for most of the Duane parts. Then when Dickey was fired Jimmy Herring took over for Dickey briefly in 2000. Most recently Warren came back into the band and took over for Jimmy to take over for Dickey.

A little confusing isn't it? Now with Warren and Derek you had the most interchangeable guitarist the Allman Brothers Band has possibly ever seen. But with Warren out for these August 2005 shows you now have Jack Pearson coming in and performing a lot of Dickey parts, which he did not have to do during his original tenure with the band.

All that being said Jack performed admirably last night at the Molson Amphitheatre. But he was obviously not prepared to perform the material off of the Allman Brothers Band most recent studio effort the 2003 album 'Hittin' the Note.' So the show was the good ol' stuff front to back.

Also it must be noted that with Chuck performing on nine of the thirteen songs performed he too was not prepared to perform 'Hittin' the Note' material, minus the Rolling Stones song "Heart of Stone" which he played with the Stones in 2002-03, but Gregg and the rest did not think to play that song last night.

Next up was the 'Idlewild South' Greg Allman original "Leave My Blues At Home" which in the middle of the song had the drums portion of the evening as well as the bass solo.

The highlight of the night was the last two songs before the encore, "Southbound" and "Jessica." These two 'Brothers and Sisters' classics were performed in the order they appeared on the album, and it was amazing to hear these songs live with Chuck Leavell as he was in the Allmans when they recorded these songs.

During "Southbound" there was an amazing call and answer that started with Chuck, then Ron, then Jack ending with Derek who was obviously leading the band throughout the show. The call and answer repeated to the point that it was like a machine gun of sound being fired into the audience. And to hear Chuck play an extended piano solo on "Jessica," which has him on the original studio recording was beautiful.

The show ended with a "Whipping Post" highlighted by a blistering solo by Derek Trucks at the end of the song. Then Molson Amphitheatre crowd showed the Allman Brothers their delight at the end with a large ovation. It should be noted that the crowd at the Amphitheatre looked larger than most of the previous Molson Amphitheatre Allman Brother Band concerts. This could have been due to the fact that the lawn section was closed off forcing all the fans to be in the seats, which did not allow for the large gaps that have been seen at the Allman Brothers shows in the past in 300 and 400 sections as many would flock towards the lawn section.

  10. I couldn't post there either.

    How was Dreams Tim?

I hope they play it tomorrow. I've only heard it once, and never with Dickey. That's eight shows with only one Dreams.

I looked it up and it was only my second "Dreams" that I saw performed at bonnaroo.

The first was at the Molson Amphitheatre in 2000 which I assume was the time you saw it as well.

  11. I just picked up my tickets to see the Steve Hackett Acoustic Trio at Hamilton Place Studio on Sunday October 2, 2005.

At the Copps Coliseum Box Office, which acts as the Hamilton Place Box Office I payed $49 Canadian for a ticket, that is without ticketmaster service charges.

For those who don't know Steve Hackett was the guitarist in Genesis from 'Nursery Cryme' in 1971 to the live album 'Seconds Out' in 1977. He went on to a solo career of limited commercial success, but he is a great player.

If you enjoy King Crimson's Robert Fripp you will definitely enjoy Steve Hackett.

    How was Dreams Tim?

I hope they play it tomorrow. I've only heard it once, and never with Dickey. That's eight shows with only one Dreams.

The Allman Brothers performance of "Dreams" at bonnaroo was quite good. The song lasted around ten minutes which is three minutes longer than the studio version, but I'm sure ten is around an average time length for current live performances of "Dreams."

I have seen the Allman Brothers six times and I know I have seen them do "Dreams" before, but I don't remember how many times? I'm going to have to look that up.

    Tim

  13. I can't post there, the subject header is too long.

It was a great show though... erie to hear Warren sing "They should of never taken the very best." During The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, down in Tennessee.

That was Greg Allman not Warren Haynes that sang The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" at bonnaroo.

Though it was an amazing song selection by the Allmans to performed "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" in Tennessee.

  14. Hey Tim, are you going to Basher's bash?

I don't know where is the Basher's/Stoned Phillips Bash info? Is it in this thread or another one as I didn't know about it?

I have the day off so I have the time, but it depends on my friend Andrew who scored me free tickets to the Allmans gig. I have to go with his plans as I am his driving whore.

BTW Here is my review from the Allman Brothers Band at bonnaroo this year that I just posted a few days ago.

    http://www.jambands.ca/sanctuary/showtopic.php?tid/223957/

  15. The Allman Brothers Band always sneaks up on me, because I can not believe the gig is tomorrow!

Then again I've been off work more than I have been on work for the last couple months and the days are just blending in together lately.

    See you all there tomorrow.

    Tim

  16. At the recent Black Crowes gig at the Kool Haus there was Paparazzi outside while we were waiting in line. I initially wondered why they would be there, then I remembered that Kate Hudson was on tour with her husband Chris Robinson.

She left the venue at one point and went into one of the touring buses parked outside. The Paparazzi asked us in line to get her attention, I just shook my head and laughed at him and told him to get her attention himself.

Later they put up fences to block the Paparazzi

view and they all left, one guy said to me "I guess that means I'm done here." Too funny.

Inside I was front row right infront of Marc Ford and Kate could be seen stage right on behind a stack of amps. I could see her, but these girls to my left couldn't so they would actually push into me from time to time to get a view of Kate.

There I thought everybody was there to enjoy music, but I guess the Black Crowes playing their hearts out was not enough for these girls. Crazy.

Though I'll admit that a few times I looked over to see Kate, and it was great to see that she was moving her head to the music and she was often singing along to her hubby's lyrics.

As for Kate not having boobies, it's obviously genetic look at her mom, Goldie Hawn. Boobs or no boobs, Kate is a stunningly beautiful woman and Chris is a lucky man.
