  1. Actually, looks like Dee and myself will be attending at this point

Mrs. Paan...at a show?? This truly IS an event!

I'll be in Toronto all day on Saturday and would love to come out, but it's a friend's birthday so I might not be making the final call for the group. I'll do my best to try and sway the collective opinion though. My brother is a huge CJ fan as a matter of fact, and he's taking an all-day lifeguarding course from 8am to 10pm on Saturday AND Sunday...and he tells me he's going to the show for sure. Should be a good time.

  2. Sorry to hear about your grandfather, Mark.

    The fest was good times.

I was a wuss and left after Swift...as much as I would have liked to have caught the closing saloon rock, we just weren't prepared to spend another night in the Siberian cold. Not being a big-time camper, my tent is a $40 supermarket special that doesn't do much good below, say, 10 degrees. Bummer that I missed DD and the Superstack jam, but I saw alot of good stuff, like:

    - Slowcoaster in the saloon, my number one highlight without a doubt. I thought the OLD drummer was good, this new guy is BETTER and a little more rock and roll. They kicked ass.

    - Burt Neilson, awesome as always. Four great musicians, great songs, great jams, good times.

    - Fat Cats. I actually haven't ventured out to see them in a while; they play so much around Hamilton that I wasn't really interested for a while. Nice to see them again, and to be reminded that they can still tear it up real good. Shit-hot, skin-tight band; Dave Hill and Chris Gatchene always impress me the most, I love their individual playing styles.

    - Jomomma. I have the sudden urge to unearth an adjective from my younger days, and that adjective is 'sick'. What a sick band. The rhythm section is incredibly tight, and the guitar player take equal cues from Garcia and Iommi. They need to get down to Hamilton more often, I know they're close by.

    - Swift. I knew it was going to be tough to replace the old drummer, but I've loved the new guy since the first time I saw him, and he was even better on Sunday night. Like Slowcoaster's new drummer, this guy is a little more rock and roll than the last guy, and I love it.

All around, good music, shitty weather, mostly good people (except for the skinhead with the SS tatoo on his bare chest on Saturday, did anybody else catch that?). See you all at the next one.

  3. "Can I buy a smoke" is something I think I've been hearing since the drastic price increase a few years ago...one day a pack was four and a quarter, next day it was eight and a quarter. The cigarette bummers must have been met with heavy backlash when asking, so it became customary to offer money. I never take the money either; my response is usually "I can GIVE you a smoke if that's what you want". There are days I've felt like taking the dough, though.

  4. I mentioned this in the Vanderpark thread but I figured this would be a little more obvious.

The Surly Young Bucks have been added to the bill at the Casbah tonight, along with Slow Hand Motem and Vanderpark. The band is:

Max Kerman (Charlemagne): vocals, piano, guitar

Mike DeAngelis (Charlemagne): guitar, bass, piano, vocals

Aaron Goldstein (i.e. me): bass, guitar, vocals

    Sean Burak: drums, vocals

Our friend Lynn Stewart will also be joining us on vocals and tambourine for a song or three (or the whole set). The is a folk/country/rock type of deal influenced primarily by The Band and Neil Young. We've got a bunch of Max's originals and a bunch of covers...Neil Young and Band covers, that is.

Cover is $8, we're on at 10, and of course following us will be the incomparable Vanderpark! Hope to see a few folks out, sorry it's such short notice.

Here's a recording of one of our original tunes in rehearsal a couple weeks ago: Edmonton

  5. Hey, check this shit out:

The Surly Young Bucks have just been added to the Hamilton gig tonight. To remind you, the band is:

Max Kerman (Charlemagne): vocals, piano, guitar

Mike DeAngelis (Charlemagne): guitar, bass, piano, vocals

Aaron Goldstein (i.e. me): bass, guitar, vocals

    Sean Burak: drums, vocals

    Lynn Stewart: vocals, tambourine

I'm in a rush or else I'd make this its own thread, but y'all should come out! It'll be a good time. We're on at 10.

  8. Well hows about this shit! My folks picked me up in the Hammer this morning and brought me to London so we could visit my grandma and grampa, on account of tomorrow being Mother's Day and all. Gotta respect the older generations, yo.

The point is I'll be strolling down to the Labbatt centre to see if I can scalp me a ticket to warm up for Tuesday at Massey. Woo hoo!

  9. Thanks for the bump and the question good buddy. As a matter of fact I have just become aware of the details.

We're playing with a band called Coquet. That's all I know about them. We're on around 11 for about an hour or so, but we're last so maybe we'll stretch it out a bit. Cover is apparently pay what you can.

Here's something else: we recorded our rehearsal today, just one mic in the middle of the room. It yielded a pretty good recording of one of the originals (I think). I'm also going to include Hey Philosophy (the tune I posted the other day) from today's rehearsal. I hope you enjoy.

    Hey Philosophy

  10. his making "philosophical" arguments in court

I thought that was interesting too, StnMtn.

[17] Smith also submitted that marihuana is a mood enhancer and therefore performs a "wellness function" which he proposes is a legitimate medical purpose for using the drug. In other words, marihuana has a function with respect to preventative medicine because it has the effect of a general panacea. While this is a novel proposition, there is only the anecdotal evidence of Smith to support it. With respect, there was no medical evidence before this court to support this submission and therefore it is rejected. However, I do find it paradoxical that while Smith acknowledges that the Compassion Club screens to ensure medical necessity for the use of marihuana and acknowledged that the drug is refused to certain classes of individuals, at the same time he submits that it should be used generally to promote health.

[18] On the basis of the evidence, this court cannot conclude that Smith requires marihuana for any medical reason.

I found it odd that he would even be allowed to bring up such an irrelevant point, or that it was included in the judgment for that matter.

  11. Is there any reason in particular you are posting this?

I would bet it's because, hilariously, Mr. Smith was president of a club called Hempology 101, and held meetings on a university campus with the aid of a signboard and public address system every Tuesday at 4:20pm!! :D :D :D

  12. hey goodrev....was that one of your crew that bought 17 tickets at shadygrove?

Indeed, that was us. The other related contingent apparently bought three, so right now we're at exactly 20 with a few folks still on the fence (so I hear). Was Julie worried he was gonna scalp them or something? :)

  13. Ahoy all,

I'm playing a last-minute gig this Friday night at Session Pub (512 Queen Street West) with The Surly Young Bucks, a side project comprised of:

Max Kerman (Charlemagne): vocals, piano, guitar

Mike DeAngelis (Charlemagne): guitar, bass, piano, vocals

Aaron Goldstein (i.e. me): bass, guitar, vocals

    Sean Burak: drums, vocals

This will be a preview of a loose collective of a folk/roots-rock group that I hope will take shape over this summer. We'll be playing for as long as they let us, we've rehearsed a handful of Max and Mike's awesome originals and a whole whack of Band covers. This will be a great gig! Sorry I'm so short on details.

    Check out my site

    Check me out on MySpace

    Check out Charlemagne on MySpace

    Check out The Session's website

    Hope to see you out,

    Aaron

  14. Me

Kookycanooky and I, along with an extended group of friends who are not on the board, will have a compound of approximately 20 people with us at the fest. We plan to set up our own little tent city. I already shotgunned mayor, but we told Kooky he could be the assistant to the mayor (not the assistant mayor).
