  1. Man I wish I could have been there...glad to hear it was a good show. They're really on top of their game nowadays, it seems.

If I may draw a comparison that some might frown upon, it took Phish almost ten years to really develop themselves into the band we knew for so long [some might disagree, but I think starting around 92 and forward are the shows that people really identify with]...perhaps this is just the dawn of a tighter, more intense moe.?

  2. Man I'm surprised more people on this board haven't heard of them. I consider them to be an appropriate alter-ego to the White Stripes: they both have two members, the white/black thing, except the White Stripes are BAD, whereas the Black Keys are GOOD.

Sometimes, though, I can't forgive them for the lacking of the bass player. Does anybody else feel this way about bands without bass players? I play some bass but don't consider myself a bass player, but come on, you need the bottom end, man. Anyway, I digress.

The Black Keys new record is solid, I've been spinning it here and there on my radio show [AHEM Friday mornings 6-9 93.3 in Hamilton]. If you dig this record, Diggzz, check out their last one too, thickfreakness. The first one was called The Big Come Up, but I didn't like it as much as the last two. I think the most recent is the best.

  3. Ok so recently I have developed an idea whereupon I add to the KD one can of baked beans. Some may be repulsed, others will see the genius in this new step. Baked beans are packed in tomato sauce, but a very mild tomato sauce and not a lot of it. The subtle tomato blends with the cheese sauce creating a happy cheesy-tomato marriage. The beans add protein and a heartiness that is hard to describe.

My only conundrum for lunch now is: White Cheddar, Sharp Cheddar or Spirals? :D

  4. Yes sir, first set was 9:45 to 11:00, second set started at 11:37 by the stage clock that I could see behind Al, and wrapped up around 1:20. They were still on at 1:34, that's the last time I remember seeing on the clock, but I think they finished closer to 2, because that was before I went upstairs, watched the band from up there for a bit, went to get my coat as the started the encore so as to avoid the line, heard "Time" and rushed back in, then they did Time Again also. I feel like they went off about 10 minutes to 2.

  5. Anyone else think that guy looks like Penn?

I get that a lot, too. But that guy is way bigger than I am.

I can't figure out if he's an ass or just doing his job. I've seen the bouncers at the OH less ferocious than they were last night when there are cops in the building, man. They were out for blood last night, couldn't figure it out. Maybe now they're worried about the cops walking in mid-show, and saying, "Ok we can plainly see that there are 5 different people smoking marijuana in here, here's your hefty ticket" whereas before the smoking ban, they could just chalk it up to "we thought they were smoking cigarettes". Either way, I've seen the guy be nice before (like once) but every other time he seems to be a jackass so I don't even give him a wayward look. But you have to figure that the jackass thing is to intimidate people from the get-go. Either way, a serious buzzkill when that guy comes pulverizing through the crowd.

Anybody see a show at the Docks recently? The Aussie PF show was there a while back, I didn't go because I had already seen them at the Hummingbird. Were the bouncers intense about the heat there? I bet the size of that place rivals the OH. Maybe it's a little bigger.

  6. I feel exactly the same way about them warming up...I thought She Sends Me was the first hot tune of the night, Disembodied Head was cool, but as soon as they were into HHH it was gold from there...the second set was QUITE incredible. Look out Ottawa, if I wasn't working tonight I'd be on a bus to your neighbourhood. Highlight of the show for me, I think, was the jam from Meat...just awesome, and they let Jim loose on the vibes for a bit, which was cool. He was also messing with a bass during one of the second set jams, he appears to be every bit a musician as he is a drummer (guffaw).

    Enjoy your moe., Ottawa.

  7. Yeah they're 20 dollars...plus a whopping total of $9.50 if you order through Ticketmaster. I avoid that noise whenever possible. Buffy if you're in Toronto and you're going tonight and still need tickets, support a local record store and buy them there. Sonic Temple (Yonge and Sheppard) and Rotate This (Queen and Bathurst) were both selling tickets for this show, and I bet they have some left. They'll only charge you 10% and you know the money is going to the store. Soundscapes at College and Bathurst also often sells tickets, but I don't know if they had them for this show.

  8. Sarah I'm in the same boat, although my girlfriend in Toronto bought my ticket. But I work in Westdale and I'm off at 8, the next GO Bus is at 8:07 at King/Dundurn (I won't make it), and the next one is 9:07. So right now the plan is to take the 9:07 and the lovely lady will get me at Union and hopefully we don't miss too much moe. So if you can get $8.45 together, that's how I'm getting there. Of course it'll cost you another $8.45 to get back in the morning, if you've got a place to stay.

But yeah, if anybody is going from Hamilton at around 8:15 or later, I would happily pitch that busfare for gas! email me therev@spin45.net

  9. Shain how are you man? You left Hamilton, I moved here, we can't get it together. Where are you and what are you doing these days?

paisley I really wanted to get to that Tommy thing but we were having a shindig at my house...I would have gone if it had been a late show, like 11:30 or 12, but I couldn't get any timing info except for one guy who told me that it was starting early, and I didn't want to arrive there hearing "I'm Free" or something late in the record.

As for moe., Jaimoe perhaps I can be of assistance in your decision. I have seen moe. four times and tomorrow will be the fifth. I was at the Phil Lesh show but missed moe.'s set due to working, so that would have made it 6, but from what I hear it wasn't a great set anyway.

Looking through my stubs, I know some are lost, but I have a stub for moe. at the Opera House, Thurs Apr 26, 2001. I think that was my second show, the first was the previous October? Either that, or it was the first, and the second was Oct 2001. I don't know if they have a tour archive or what, but that seems to ring a bell. These two shows, and my third at the Guverment, were AWESOME. They were truly blowing my mind. I'm a huge ABB fan too and moe. is definately up my alley. moe. jams much more seriously and intensely than ABB, but there's a lot of southern rock about them.

As for the Phoenix show, it wasn't my favourite. I brought two newbies who were totally turned off of moe., and they won't be joining me tomorrow night. I'm telling you though, on the strength of my first three shows, they are still worth it. Now I'll feel bad for convincing you if we end up with a repeat of the Phoenix (what ruined it for me was an intensely heady 40-minute jam to end the first set), but given the tour report above, I have faith. I don't know what your money situation is, but if forking over 22 bucks won't break you, I'd say go to the show.

p.s. I should mention that my first moe. show was my first date with my girlfriend, and we're still together...coincidence? Probably. ::

  10. I really wanted to get to that show, but I have a prior committment. Send me an e-mail, maybe we'll set something up.

I guess I'm looking for casual jamming...with potential for more? This sounds more and more like video dating the more I type...

"I like candlelight sessions, long walks down the yellow brick road...looking for a bass player who UNDERSTANDS me, man..."

    Uh, right :). Send me an e-mail. therev@spin45.net .

  11. Hi everybody. I'm looking for people to jam with. I live in Hamilton, but would come into Toronto for the right people. I play lots of stuff but want to concentrate on guitar for now. I've been writing tunes, but don't really sing or write lyrics. Could manage some backup singing. Anyway I have a sometimes drummer but I am pretty much open to jamming with anybody. Here's a site where I've got some of my tunes up. Feedback from anyone is welcome and appreciated. The site is pretty self explanatory, but I should mention that I know that the production is no good, and some of the mixes are shite, and some of the leads are shite, but I sort of wanted to lay out the sound I'm looking to get into. Again though, I'm not married to it, and would like to form a collective sound with other people who maybe have some similar but some differing musical interests. I'm heavy into Neil Young, Band, other rootsy stuff, also harder stuff like Mule (you'll hear it in the tunes) and headier stuff like Floyd and Zappa, but open to pretty much anything. The last band I played with was last year in Toronto, and we basically jammed hard funk and blues. Here's the site:

...and you can email me at therev@spin45.net

    Cheers.

  12. Man I can't believe I forgot to mention an album that I've worn through the grooves!

BB King - Live at Cook County Jail

    king_cookf.jpg

Don't get me wrong - I have much love and respect for Freddie and Albert. But one listen to this record and you will realize why BB King really is the King of the Blues. This record is worth buying for three of the eight cuts - don't get me wrong, the record smokes front to back, but the three defining moments are:

    How Blue Can You Get

    Worry,Worry, Worry

Darling, You Know I Love You (Side 2 medley)

The first two because BB cuts loose on the guitar, plenty of sweet left-hand trills and melodic lines. The third, because he hits this note singing...you'll understand when you hear it. It's in the last chorus:

"Well you've GOOOONE! GOO-OO-OO-ONE and left me, for someone else!" It's sweet.

I beseech you, if you haven't heard this record, it blows Live at the Regal out of the water. Pick it up.

  13. Man shitidiot's list pretty much sums it up for me, though I would mess with the order a bit, putting the Bros closer to the top...but Band of Gypsies tops it off for me too. Does anybody have the 2-CD set they released a while ago? The record is good on vinyl, but this 2CD set has alternates of pretty much all the tunes, it is WORTH picking up if Band of Gypsies is your thing.

Also I have to give an honourable mention to Zappa/Mothers Roxy and Elsewhere.

  14. Dude you just missed them...I gave the title track from Burning on Fumes a spin a little after 8 yesterday. No worries, I will play them again in the next couple of weeks; trying to get them to come to Hamilton.

Thanks for the kind words, I can't beleive I actually have regular listeners. Thanks for listening man.

  15. Uh

She signed her post 'Mary'. Please forgive my assumption that her name was 'Mary'.

Back on topic, show went well this morning. I have plans to throw up a site and archive them, as we've been recording them. Would love to hear from anybody that tuned in. Thanks.

  16. Well thank you Mary :). Just came along to bump this up, I've got two co-hosts tomorrow morning, D. Charles Rosen and my hilarious compadre Isaac. Hilarity will ensue and good tunes will be spun! Tomorrow I'm hoping to throw down:

    The Steepwater Band from Chicago

    The Spades from Peterborough

A couple tracks from the new Mule record

A track (or maybe two) from the new North Mississippi Allstars live disc

A track from the new Crickets disc (Buddy Holly's band! With a new disc featuring Eric Clapton, Don Everly and more)

I'd love it if people from this board tuned in! 93.3 FM in Hamilton and surrounding, and http://cfmu.mcmaster.ca anywhere else. Cheers!

  17. Hi all. I lurk around sometimes, don't think I've ever posted.

I wanted to throw out a plug for my brand new radio show. I host a show called The Reverend's Attic on 93.3 CFMU in Hamilton. My format is heavy on roots- and roots-inspired rock. Some bands would be considered "jambands", others not, but I have a feeling that people here would dig what I'm doing. As an example, here's a cross-section of what I played last week:

    The Band

    The Stones

    Joel Plaskett

    The Crowes

    The Faces

    Gov't Mule

Anyway the show is Friday mornings from 6 to 9am. CFMU streams online so if you're not in Hamilton, you can still listen. Hit the stations's website at http://cfmu.mcmaster.ca and click 'webcast' in the left hand column; the stream will open in your Winamp. As far as I know, Winamp is the only player that will work with the stream.

Anyway thanks for reading and I hope you tune in! Cheers.

EDIT: Sorry link was dead. Live again now.

  18. Hello all. Nice to see my article has found its way over here. Meggo's got it, what I meant was that the music is so much more than the sum of its parts. I added the word 'stereotypically' because, well, that's true of a lot of bands in this scene.

As for the Yoda comment, what can I say. That's the way I write. Would you rather read a bunch of reviews that say "The band fuckin rocked man!".

Anyway I figure this is a good opportunity to give a good plug for the site. Initially we started spin45.net as a window into the jam and roots community for people who were outside of those communities, people who sort of didn't know what they were missing. We offer live downloads of one or two shows at a time; they are currently in OGG (don't shoot) but are in the process of moving to a new server so that we can offer lossless downloads. Additionally, it's a place to shoot my mouth off, because I dig a lot of music (most of it fitting into the jam genre, some not so) and I like to write about it. We don't make any money from the site (no ads either). So go take a look: http://www.spin45.net

    Cheers everybody

    Aaron
