  1. I had the unique opportunity to do this over the summer...I was on the radio 15 hours a day at an overnight summer camp.

Based on my own experience of how I was turned onto music myself (at age 6), and further how I attempted to get the kids into good tunes, I would say to start them off the way the world started off hearing rock and roll. Begin with Buddy Holly: for young kids, his stuff is great because it's singable and fun. Progress to Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis. Earlier stuff like the Platters, the Drifters, the Coasters are also good, but probably not for kids. Too boring for their attention spans. Little bit of Elvis, a healthy dose of Beach Boys and then straight on into the Beatles. After that it gets messy. American Beauty might be an appropriate to introduce once you've hit Rubber Soul or Revolver. That should be plenty of music for now, eh?

  2. Right now I am seriously - SERIOUSLY - trying to get myself to the Mule at the Beacon. It's pretty much hinging on some free accomodations that are being investigated for us. I'm not getting my hopes up because I'll be too disappointed.

And hey, if that doesn't work out, I'll be happy to party with the Fat Cats at Pepper Jack's. Would love to get to Ottawa for Nero...but you know, nowhere to crash, don't really know anybody there, not sure if I can convince the girlfriend...we'll see.

  3. WELL your snide replies aside, gentlemen :D things for the trip are shaping up nicely! It all hinges of course on one very tedious factor; that is, my roomate has a cousin who lives in Manhattan who will be up here for Christmas and New Years; a fortiori her apartment will be vacant. A little bit of sweet talkin', a little bit of liquor purchasin', we should be in there. Found a cheap flight on Westjet, but get this. The flights I found were $69 there, $129 back, so basically $200 CAD return. Not too bad considering the season. Problem was, after tax and charges and all that sh!t, the total was more like $350. We're going to take the train for $180 return each instead. Mule shows are EXPENSIVE but I guess that's what you get for the New Years doubleheader. Three sets on NYE apparently, and there are still decent seats left. Well I'll keep y'all updated on the progress.

Hey, if it doesn't work out, there's always the Fat Cats at PJC...

  4. I figure there must be a few people on here that have followed a tour here or there...I have a hostel-related question.

I'm trying to get to NYC for the Mule at the Beacon Dec 30 and 31. I've found some nice looking hostels online, but every single one of them seems to be booked solid on new year's eve. Is there something else I can try? Trying not to pay through the nose, but I'm going with my girlfriend so we want a private room, not dorm-style like many European hostels. A site I can hit? Number I can call? Anybody have a friend with a spare room in NYC? :D I'd appreciate any insight that anybody might have.

  5. Here's the thing. I also really love Nero. A lot. I had planned to see them in Toronto a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't. Then I tried to get to Guelph. Couldn't do it. Now I see that they're hitting the PJC once more before the Sabbatical-chasm...but it's my anniversary with my girlfriend. To her credit, she is awesome and extremely easy-going on just about every aspect of our relationship, but I know that the anniversary is one of the things she is into, so I won't get to the Peej either. If I don't get to Kitchener or Guelph (cause I ain't gettin to Ottawa, that's for sure), I might cry.

  6. Saw Cake in Toronto a little while ago. Show was awesome once you understand where they are coming from. Some people are taken aback at their arrogance, but they're not really contrary, it's just an attitude. The only thing I found was that it was a little short for a 50 dollar show. They were on and off in an hour and 20, with a 10 minute encore.

  7. Indeed, the Rev. Al does the original. Another awesome version is on the second Big Sugar record, Five Hundred Pounds. Totally raunchy, rootsy, bluesy.

That is a fu©king sick setlist. The Mule in Toronto was awesome too, but that looks like a better list. We were also treated to Fallen Down > Other One Jam > FD and it was sick. I am so in love with the Mule, I hardly have words to describe. I am also loving the new record; Wine and Blood is a hidden gem on the record, in my opinion. We didn't hear it in Toronto though.

  8. I'm sorry I missed this yesterday, because Plant would have gotten a resounding vote to leave, coupled with a rant about why Rod Stewart would have been a better vocalist for Led Zeppelin.

Today, there's no contest: Jimmy-James Piggy-Page gets an unceremonious boot from the Reverend. And all you wanks voting George, I am disappointed.
