  1. I haven't heard much about his live show before so you could be right! Only one way to find out though.. Yeah I thought I read somewhere that he was there when the Allstars got together but broke away from them (or vice versa) pretty quickly.

Is the Mercury Lounge Ottawa's hoochie bar?

  2. I stumbled across a few Canadian dates for DJ Greyboy.. If you've never really gotten into dj's before, this dude might be the one for you. "Andreas Stevens, aka Greyboy, born 1970, and residing in San Diego, has gone full circle. He was the first artist to sign to Ubiquity, and his first full-length album is still the label's all-time best seller. Not bad for a record that cost less than $4000 to make, and sold on an advertising budget of $0! He was a man in the right place at the right time. While the acid jazz phenomenon was brewing in Europe in the early 1990s, Greyboy became the first American producer to mix beats with jazz. His chunky beat-making sensibilities earned him praise from the European crowd, and his tracks were heard by crowds checking out DJs like UK-based Gilles Peterson, Marcus Wyatt (LA), and DJ Smash (NYC)."

Greyboy helped put together and produce the Greyboy Allstars with Karl Denson and Robert Walter and I think he's doing some touring with them right now.

He's recently put out a single featuring Quantic with Sharon Jones -- samples of which can be heard here.

I got hooked on Greyboy through his album Greybreaks, a '93 release of "stripped down beats and jazz". CLICK HERE to listen to some samples from that.

Finally, he's just released his first LP that he's done in 3 years. Its called Soul Mosaic and samples can be heard here!

I might come up for the Ottawa night.

  3. KevO, i'll hook you up with my copy at the Sharon Jones show....

god knows i dont listen to it often...no point of it just sitting around here...

THanks! :: I've been trying to get to the bottom of what happened to that package I sent ya but no luck so far. Maybe I'll re-burn the discs.

  4. Seven Below... perhaps my favourite of the Round Room songs!! Always nice to see that one make an appearance.

(One free kick to the balls for the next fucker who says that Round Room was a poor album. C'mon... you know you want a good boot to the jewels!)

I hear that Hammer, Round Room has some gems on it! I don't actually own a copy but I want to (and will soon methinks). Waves, All Of These Dreams, 46 Days are all songs that I like a lot. These setlists look pretty damn good!

  5. I'll be there for Sebadoh, Joel Plaskett and Sharon Jones & The Dapkings!!!!!!!! Should be a great trip home. I'm a bit sceptical about the pre-recorded drum tracks for the Sebadoh show I must admit. Either way though, it won't stop me from getting right ripped and havin some fun!

  6. Holy mother of god.. Look at this nugget that I just found: The Cowbell Project!

"Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keys. The foundation of rock music. Occasionally strings are used to give a lush, orchestral feel. But we all know when a song needs that extra oomph, that extra push over the top, there's only one thing that will satisfy: The Cowbell.

It's the cymbal's evil third cousin. It's the dark ring that pounds in the back of your brain and lets you know, it's time to rock. The cowbell is an instrument that can't be overused. It should never be underused. Many great rock and roll songs are perfect because the cowbell is used just right."

  7. Kimock has some deadly mp3's and video clips at his site by the way.

But not enough cowbell in his material, don't you agree?

    So true.

There's never enough cowbell really! I wonder if anyone has ever put together a cowbell symphony, or a cowbell philharmonic....? This would be the ultimate satisfaction.

  8. Yeah I'll be hitting this show like it stole something (TOronto show that is). Only time I've seen Kimock play was at Darien with The Other Ones in Summer '98. 'Twas a good show I do recall. Kimock has some deadly mp3's and video clips at his site by the way.

  9. I know most of you will be at the Bela Fleck show in The Hammer.. But if you can't make it to Hamilton, we're having one final blowout party at my house in Peterborough. Come one, come all!

featuring The Busboyeez - a five man, all bus boy sex rock assault system hailing from Ottawa. They sing such hits as "Jesus Was a Bus Boy" and "Lesbian Sandwich". You can check out some songs here. These guys are gonna blow the roof off of 793 George!

DJ's spinning funk, disco, break beats and hip hop well into the morning..

(thanks Lynn for hosting the pic!)

  10. Burt Neilson Band - "By the Door"

Curious to hear what others feel about the latest BNB studio effort. I have been really enjoying it for a couple of weeks now. A nice change of pace for them, and a neat little pop album.

I like it! I haven't listened to it that much yet but I reacll some solid songwriting and lyrics that somehow resonated with my own life, like i knew exactly what times and places they were singing about.

  11. I don't know how many people noticed the news about The Join that was posted on the main page under JammyNews about 2 weeks ago.. If not, go check it out!

To sum it up though, Darren Shearer from The NEw Deal has a new weekly gig in Toronto on Thursday nights. The first one was last Thursday. Apparently there will be guests every week (sometimes including "familiar faces") and Darren said "This will be a new approach for me. I am using an electronic kit, and the band will be concentrating on super chill atmospheric layering, break beats, deep house and other subdued approaches. It is completely improv, and will be structured on the spot. It should be very cool."

I know at least MarcO will be interested in this! Has anyone checked it out yet?

  12. Finally! I don't think these dates look that bad.. Short tour but it comes as no surprise. The only thing missing for me (us) of course are some Canadian dates. I'll probably make it to SPAC for at least the first night, maybe both.. And then most definitely I'll be going to Vermont on Aug 14-15. woohoooo! Long time no Phish.

  13. It certainly is a tiny venue.. Judging by the 2-3 times I've been, I'd agree that it is hard to get a seat. Its worth getting there a half hour early for sure.

Good to hear he'll be around all Summer!! ::

All I can say is there's something in the works...

    ...

    Next week :)

These cryptic remarks are making me antsy!! I won't be able to make it next Monday but I look forward to hearing about it at least.
