I remember when the music store I work at could afford to play (read: promote) the music they sell in the store, but now that SOCAN is so efficient at gathering cash for their clients, no music gets played and cd sales have plummeted. Way to go SOCAN.
Sounds like your music store gained some financial benefit from playing music in the store and refused to acknowledge that. Why not kick the artists who recorded that music down a few dimes? Maybe SOCAN needs to look at updating their rates for different events and venues, but everyone else needs to recognize the musicians who make the music.

Wood Brothers rock. I don't have the album yet but I've got some great live shows.
I've been getting back to my roots lately and have been listening these two albums almost exclusively for a week:
-
That was great.

In keeping with the themes of identity and political correctness:
Whatever happened to "Peace and goodwill toward men?" (and women)(And people who don't gender identify)

I like Vic Firth's too. I use 7A for quiet settings, and 5A or Peter Erskine Signatures the rest of the time.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for lesbians, having found they and I possess many similar predilections.
Mark: Okay, gents, I'd like to be a dyke.
Bruce: Ha ha.
Scott: Who wouldn't?
Mark: Don't be crass! I meant that. I'd like to be buried in the sisterhood of women.
Bruce: Yeah. Lesbians are so great. They get so much done in a day.
Dave: [quiet] Yeah.
Mark: Yeah, yeah. You know why? Because they get it done together. There's no competition. With them, it's "go team" all the way.
Dave: Wow, women together, huh?
Scott: Is that women with a "Y"?
Dave: Oh! Do you have to ask?
I also recommend Dave Bidini's books, "On a Cold Road" and "For Those About to Rock." I enjoyed "Neil and Me" and "Living with the Dead" too.

I dig some of Luke Doucette's stuff. How was he as Van Morrison? Seems like an odd match to me. I'm going to check it out this afternoon.

Cool. I should double check the internship I'm applying for. I kinda just assumed the age limit was thirty because it's aimed at "youth," which usually means 18-29. Thanks for the info.
Also, while the future of the Canada Corps programme is uncertain, the axe hasn't fallen yet and there are still grants to be had. Mine was $11 000 for a four month stint so it's definately worth sending in an application. Good luck.
-
nor am i a youth
Yeah, there's a lot less available once you turn thirty. I'm racing the clock trying to get an internship in Ethiopia before my birthday. If the process takes too long I won't be eligible anymore.

I did an internship in Ghana last year through the Canada Corps. It's worth checking out as you get more funding than you would from a lot of other programmes I've looked into. You don't have to be a student either, though students have more options in terms of what they can apply for. http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/CanadaCorps

I'm in my last year of a BSc in Agriculture. In the summer I work as a carpenter and grow vegetables that I sell at the Antigonish farmer's market.

Great band name.

How do we record what we're streaming so that when it disappears from this site it won't be lost?
I use Winamp with the Streamripper plug-in. You can get them both free at www.download.com

The archive has been having problems with it's search engine lately so sometimes you won't get any results when looking for a band.

I loved the Tea Party's first two albums and their early shows. They were the first show I saw in a bar back in '94. I was 17 and got in with an older cousin's ID. Good times.
They definately went downhill quite a few years ago though, and Martin certainly seems like a self-absorbed prick.

I don't know if this was posted elsewhere, but SCI records is offering free Xmas downloads of a bunch of bands. Check it out: http://staging.magichat.net/sci/

get a pizza stone ...
i cant figure out how to use them.
Heat the stone in the oven and sprinkle some cornmeal on it before you throw the pizza down. The cornmeal keeps it from sticking and makes it easy to rotate while cooking.
Oh, and I usually cook pizzas at around 375 degrees.

I've always hated Tons of Steel. The one and only time I saw a Phil & Friends show they made sure to play it.

And in related news:
(VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA) More breakups have been announced in the jamband world. Following the lead of The Dead, Phish and, most recently, The String Cheese Incident, one-man jamband Keller Williams announced today that he is breaking up with himself. The eclectic ensemble of one says that he is immediately leaving his current tour so that he can pursue other musical interests and possibly a solo career. Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes have been tapped to replace the Virginia native for his remaining dates, with special guest appearances rumored from Bob Weir, Trey Anastasio and Bill Nershi. Ironically, Williams final songs as part of Keller Williams, was the medley "Bob Rules> Why Can't We All Just Get Along> Let's Get The Show On The Road> Come Together" capped off with Yoko Ono's "Why." -
Been digging Cortlands and Honeycrisps lately.

Maybe this is beating a dead horse, but I just found what K-os posted on the Evolve message about his show:
First post:
the fact is
sometimes ego
it makes artists deny alot of things
the hardest position to be in
is to choose to do something for yourseLf
that also gives weight to the opinions of others
alot has happened since i started doing this..
i always maintain that the best bands are having fun on stage
and the audience is witnessing that
its like a reflection
in reality we were rocking for ourselves
we were jumping back into the ring
with the loss of a truly GREAT player
and i am happy that as a band we soldiered that!
i could say alot of things
my souL thinks ahead
maybe i wanted to spark a debate
cause i have an album coming out
maybe i like most- thrive off of being an underdog
maybe i wanted to step on stage and NOT CARE
for this is why i chose music in the first place
i have ROCKED shows and come away feeling empty
i didnt feel like this after EVOLVE because i knew
what i was about to do how i was appraoching things
the true friends..
they will let that show be what it was
critics will be critics
but i wonder what they would do?
if i cancelled the show it would be cowardly
and to tell you the truth we nearly didnt show up..
as far as a free show to pay back the audience
um,mmmmm
i owe people nothing
only GOD
and truth in the moment!!
the greatest works of art
is when we are witnessing people
runnin to
or running away from GOD
everything else is mediocre
and we are not mediocre good
so did you really think we would be
mediocre bad?
it was nasty!! haha
i might have been drunk
but im stiLL ....
shalom
see you all soon
Second post:
to all the people who came on this site and spoke their minds..
i respect that thank you.
first of all i will say i DO NOT do LSD ex. or coke .. i dont even smoke weed anymore- i do tho drink alchohoL! and YES i was drunk
over the summer my base player qwit the band.
this caused a huge issue between us and we thought of all going our seperate ways
but we did not
EVOLVE was our first show in that configuration
it was an experiment.
we all new going into the show that we would try to make it up as we went
to those who came with expectations..
all i can say is expectation is the mother of disappointment!
and for those who took the trip with us- i thank you.
i am sad that people took this opportunity to berate my friends in the band!
they went with my experiment even though they are used to having
their shit togeth. This is sad because no matter i was in Halifax or whatev.
i thought EVOLVE was a place i could try something different .. we are evolving as a band. This hurts my feeLings.. i have done bad shows.. but i have never seen such ignorant comments...
i guess my experiment worked..
people are the same
commerciaL.. hippie.. black .. or white.
they want to be entertained!
peace and love

I ate fried goat cheese curds in Ghana. It's tasty stuff, but you definately don't want to eat too much.

Sure the band benefits. But a band benefits when a radio station plays one of their tunes too. Should radio therefore have access to artists' music for free as well?
I'm certainly not suggesting that record stores stop playing music. I'm just saying that the music has economic value and the artists should be compensated for it's use. If playing music in the store is part of their marketing strategy then it should be part of the cost of doing business, regardless of what that line of business that may be.
If SOCAN plans to continue pursuing revenues from sources that have long gotten a free ride then I think they have to re-examine their rates and the way they do business for sure. There has to be some negotiation with record stores, web radio, etc. I agree that SOCAN's tactics have gotten out of hand, but I do think they are entitled to pursue those revenues, they just have to be smarter about it.
Was the album "Are We Not Horses"? I've been looking for that one and haven't found it yet. I've got "The World Was Hell To Us" and really enjoy it. Good band.
