  1. just drove Hwy 6 from Guelph to Hamilton and it was pretty slick in spots. but, drivers were actually pretty careful, so it wasnt that bad.

EDIT: of course, after I arrive, they close McMaster. so much for the new policy of 5:30am notification on the website. LOTS of angry people here today, who checked the website before venturing in. UWaterloo, WLU are also closed, but UG and Mohawk, being the troopers that they are, are still open.

  2. greenwashing, nothing more.

sure, they may be acting locally by installing a few pretty solar panels or replacing inefficent trucks, but they continue to screw things up globally. walmart's strategically forced, lowest, third-world labour/supplier costs doesnt come close to being green in China. an astonishing 10% of all of China's exports are to this one retailer. and 80% of walmart's products are manufactured in China.

a new truck in Montana doesnt make up for the irreversably polluted Songhua river in Harbin city.

  3. I always make sure I listen to the band on the way to the show, otherwise I end up looking like a fool when I lip-synch in the front row.

I'll never forget the time Elton John called me out when I sang "Hold me closer, Tony Danza" ... :P

  4. talk about a buzzkill for the encore!

why does every encore have to be a blow the roof off the venue-rocker song all the time? personally, I love Waste and was always happy to hear them play it. it made me feel like it meant something to be in a room with several thousand other people, all being completely unproductive, but having a good time just sharing the experience with others.

also, remember that this was the first of a 3-night mini-run in Upstate New York (the next two nights in Albany) and obviously the band knew that a lot of people in the audience that night would be attending all three nights, so this was a nice way for them to say "Hey people, let's take a breather and get ready for another couple of blow-out nights". these were great shows!

listening to the tapes afterwards is not always the same experience as being at the show, and context is sometimes lost. in fact, in '95, they actually opened shows with Tweezer Reprise a couple of times, calling back an unreprised Tweezer they had played a night or two before. at that time, setlists werent necessarily created to be autonomous units.

  5. that show was my introduction to the Talking Heads. i'd never paid much attention to them prior to that, other than they did that funky "peanut butter" song (Life During Wartime). always made sure to catch them every time afterwards. hugely influential band.

i was a MAJOR Police fan, and Demolition Man and Spirits in the Material World were highlights for me. love those songs - anything from Ghost in the Machine - best Police album, imo.

  6. the 1981 show was actually in Oakville, not Toronto. at the 1982 show, the Talking Heads were a last minute addition (not on any posters) and were arguably better than the Police. Joan Jett got pelted with fruit and they stopped the show.

that was back in the day when they let you bring a cooler full of beer (and grapefruits) into the stadium. :P

  7. I wonder what else happened?

I heard that Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein and Hillary shared some sweet Kush in a bong, while Al Gore, Howard Dean and John Kerry just sat in the corner, pounding back boilermakers, and dreamed about what could have been ...
