  1. Deadbase VIII is telling me that Tomorrow Is Forever was performed a total of 10 times.

9 in 1972 and the one in 1974. In 1972 the song showed up 3 times in September, 3 in October, 3 in November and once in December.

Cool. I suspected that for the most part, nothing before 72 tour. I read a user review who made the claim about seeing them preform it in 69, so it was a grain of salt thing anyhow. Thanks for the info.

  2. As someone who has (and really still does) use my digitized music more than streaming, I'll offer my experience. I did FLAC, but a lot of my live collection was also in SHN and those were simply copied over. For my purchased CDs, I converted to FLAC. I used https://xiph.org/flac/download.html and EAC http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/. There may be better options now-a-days but I stuck with what I liked and trusted.

I did what your planning, so maybe something to consider, I bought a 2.5 tb external HDD and filled it - 2tb worth of CDs & a lot of my CDRs. I spent hours transferring & converting them (I would EAC to PC, then convert to FLAC). About 2 years later though, the HDD started to fail (bad sectors). If you go this route I'd recommend you have another (same size or bigger) HDD and use it only for back ups. I now have 3x 3tb HDDs, two media and one for back ups. I have two pcs though, one I use to connect & surf internet and the other used only for media, but connected to my network, home stereo & tv. I should just build a home server.

As for media players, I still prefer winamp. I've tried Music Bee, Media Monkey and a couple others but Winamp servers my needs best.

Can't help you with a FLAC portable player, I still haven't owned a portable player of any type or brand.

Is it worth it? I thought so, for my live collection anyhow. I'd guess the majority of my purchased studio CDs are easily found via streaming though, save for those bands that don't see much radio play.

  3. I know there used to be a few folks on here that used Rdio so thought it may be of interest.

Pandora to Acquire Key Assets from Rdio

“We are defining the next chapter of Pandora’s growth story,” continued McAndrews. “Adding live music experiences through Ticketfly was a transformative step. Adding Rdio’s impressive technology and talented people will fast-track new dimensions and enhancements to our service. I couldn’t be more optimistic about Pandora’s future and the future of music.”

“The Rdio team built an acclaimed product and technology platform that has consistently led innovation in the young streaming industry. I'm pleased that many members of the Rdio team will continue to shape the future of streaming music, applying our tradition of great design and innovative engineering on an even larger stage with Pandora,” said Anthony Bay, chief executive officer of Rdio.

The transaction is contingent upon Rdio seeking protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California. Upon approval of the proposed transaction by the bankruptcy court, Rdio will be winding down the Rdio-branded service in all markets. Pandora is not acquiring the operating business of Rdio, and is acquiring the technology and talent to accelerate its own business strategy. The transaction is subject to the approval of the Bankruptcy Court, which will supervise an auction for the assets of Rdio, as well as other customary closing conditions.

  4. If anything My BrotherE, this is where corrections can be made without egos being involved. Facts are facts but I swear I have never heard a PeggyO prior to 1977.......that I can remember ;-)

One cover snuck its way into this box set that I wouldnt have guessed. I think it's the 1973 show but it might be the 1972 show, 50-50 guess. Tomorrow Is Forever is the song. Best Garcia-Donna ballad ever. I now know two. The one from the Grateful Dead Movie 5cd set and this one. It's such a phenomenal cover for them and a shame they didnt do it more often.

Glad to see Tomorrow is Forever made it into the mix. I have a few different versions, but I'm partial to 09/26/72, though many argue the best version is from the movie soundtrack (10/19/74). I personally like the former much more for a few reasons, pure live vs produced live and I think Donna's vocals are stronger on the 72 version. I find that folks who know or have listened to the original version tend to appreciate Donna's vocals a bit better in regards to that one.

One things for sure, Dolly/Porter sure could pen a strong song.

I've read that the Grateful Dead played the tune as early as 69, though I can't claim to have heard or know which show. I'm not sure if I'd like it any better without Donna though, seems to require a female vocal to be truly effective in my opinion. If Deadbase online worked for me I'd check, but alas it doesn't.

  5.  Cant recall an early version of PeggyO, doubt I ever had it on tape prior to 1977

Not being picky here, but I believe the first time was in 73. I have a version on cassette 12/10/73 Charlottetown. A quick scan of my collection (on my pc anyhow) shows the same show was released as part of GD's Download Series (#8).

Sounds like I may have to mail of a HDD to someone and get a copy of this. Been enjoying reading your reviews. Cheers.

  6. Perhaps my memory is bad, or I was taught differently or have simply misunderstood my entire life. Math and its ilk were never my strong suit, just as explaining myself clearly hasn't been either, so hopefully ya'll get my drift.

I've always interpreted 5x3 to imply three fives (5+5+5), and 3x5 to imply five threes (3+3+3+3+3). Of course both total 15.

I don't recall if I was being taught arrays in third or fourth grade or if I ever was at all. Perhaps it was called something else then, I don't remember. Regardless, I would still interpret the question, 4x6 to imply six fours (4+4+4+4+4+4), so six rows of four.

Reading the comments it seems I'm not alone. I know how this stuff is taught has changed over the years so nothing would surprise me, plus I'm not familiar with such terms as "rote" or "common core", and that appears to be where the discrepancies (and confusion) come in.

    Anyway, thought this was interesting.

    http://www.iflscience.com/editors-blog/teacher-marks-child-s-55515-answer-incorrect

The web has kicked up a storm after a child was marked as incorrect for saying "5+5+5=15"on a grade school math test.

The question simply asked to use repeated addition to solve 5x3. The math question is a typical question set by the Common Core for third graders. However, under the guidelines for the Common Core, you supposed to understand 5x3 as “five groups of three” not “three groups of five.”

The child was then marked down again for drawing six rows of four instead of four rows of six.

The image was originally uploaded to Imgur and Reddit around a week ago where many commenters were infuriated by the overly pedantic “by-the-book” thinking.  One popular comment on the Reddit post said, “So now you just took a kid who was doing well at math, confused them, and turned them off of it with your continuous nit picking of shit that doesn't matter.”

  7. http://pitchfork.com/news/61655-bruce-springsteen-announces-the-river-box-set/

Featuring previously-unreleased music, never before seen concert footage from 1980, and a new documentary about The River

Bruce Springsteen will release a new box set, The Ties That Bind: The River Collection on December 4 via Columbia Records. In addition to 1980's The River, the 4CD, 3DVD box set will feature previously-unreleased music, never before seen concert footage from 1980, and a new documentary about The River called "The Ties That Bind". Check out the 55-song tracklist here.

Specifically, The Ties That Bind: The River Collection will consist of the original The River double album, the first official release of The River: Single Album (the 10-track album that Springsteen recorded in 1979 as a follow up to 1978's Darkness On The Edge Of Town, which was never released).

The set will also contain a CD of studio outtakes from 1979-1980 (The River: Outtakes), as well as a two-DVD film of previously-unreleased, newly edited footage from a 1980 show in Tempe, Arizona ("Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: The River Tour, Tempe 1980"). It will also include rare tour rehearsal footage, the "The Ties That Bind" documentary, and a coffee table book of 200 rare photos and memorabilia. The liner notes will include an essay by Mikal Gilmore, the original Rolling Stone album review from 1980, and the Boss's updated comments about the album.

  9.

    Shame.

I'm sure it'll mean good things for the brewer and their employees (financially, employment wise etc), and I guess that's the point from their view. The wider market available to Labatt will most likely offset the losses of local revenue from folks who prefer to spend their money on locally owned products (ie: Provincial), but who knows. If track records are anything to gauge this shit on it's safe to assume either over saturation, price hikes or depreciation in quality will happen eventually.
