  1. I only checked it out 'cause I heard several friends rant and rave all aboot it. So I d/l'd it all and gave it a shot without hesitation. I found it slow to start, but intersting at how the characters slowly develop from the flashbacks. By the end, it definitely sucked me in... I could be watching this season (despite hate being kept in suspense).

I never lost interest in it because I blasted through the whole season in 3 days. My eyes burn though, and I was having strange dreams in between.

  2. I have a pair of etymotics and swear by them. They use noise-isolation rather than cancellation, allowing you to listen in loud environments at a lower volume.. The thing I wonder about noise-cancellation is whether or not they change (even in the slightest bit) the accuracy of the sounds that are being reproduced since they are really adding inverted noise...I guess it would really depend on how accurate the sampling & reproduction of the inverted noise is - but it is still adding more, rather than isolating the noise, and faithfully reproducing the sound as it should be. Just my thoughts though, definitely a whacky neato way to drown things out in the background!

  3. Is the drive setup as a master or slave? I had the same type of problem when I first hooked up my pioneer dvr108 as a slave, burned at first, then had I/O issues and burned discs with skips/unlistenable.

Set it up as a master, no problem. I've also experienced similar unreliable dvd burner problems with a BenQ dvd burner setup as a slave (which led me to buy my pioneer drive, but now that I've figured it out...well..2 dvd burners can't hurt).

  4. To answer your questions short 'n sweet:

I spent well over a week thinking about it and making rough notes and brainstorming. Spent about a week writing the actual thing and had a prof review it as well.

The application was intended for a PhD but in the end after getting it, I used it for a MSc. They are only 2 years anyway, so I would've had to reapply for a PhD - at which point, I was at UofT and didn't stand a chance at making it out of the department.

  5. Hey Blane,

I didn't apply for SSHRC, but I did the equivalent grant for the sciences - an NSERC grant. I put quite a bit of effort into it, fluffing my proposal a bit by putting a more influential/positive spin on the research I was doing at the time. In my proposal, I was extremely specific with my goals and directions and clearly demonstrated a keen interest in research. The scientific proposals are just like a short grant, so I spent a bit of time to figure out the details and logistics of how to test my hypotheses.

I managed to get several good reference letters from my supervisor/boss at the time as well as my undergrad thesis supervisor... my boss ended up becoming the VP of the university so I think that really helped. I don't know the process of selection for SSHRC, but for NSERC, it really depended on which university (if any) your application was coming out of. Each department begins with an internal selection process to send their most promising applicants to the university, then the school selects from that pool..the best from there go on to Ottawa and then get selected from a pool of applicants from canada. So in my case it depends on the year, strength of each department/university each year etc. In the end I did get one for 2 years but once coming to UofT with it, I knew I would not get one if I reapplied after the 2yrs, the competition here is far greater than in Guelph. That being said, I have no idea if the process is quite the same for SSHRC.

Anyway, hope that helps a bit.

  6. The blurb on Frank Zurbano's blog is taken directly from the shakedown festival's site. Seeing the numbers shows that baseline ticketing was the biggest point of ticket sales and they had this to say:

    SCI Ticketing statement:

SHAKEDOWN FESTIVAL REFUNDS Regarding the Shakedown Camping & Music Festival, now that the weekend has passed, and we have had time to fully evaluate the situation, we want to let you know that we are going to be refunding every single customer who purchased tickets through us to the festival. We do not know how long it will take for us to get this money back from the promoter, and as a small grassroots company we can ill afford to absorb this loss, but you, our customers, should not have to wait. It may take up to a week to fully complete the refund process, but we are starting it immediately, so that the refunds should hit your credit card accounts within ten days or less. Taking good care of music fans like you is the whole reason we do this, we will always protect you in the very rare instance when something goes wrong.

  7. I know this is a long shot, but is there anyone here planning on going to see the Cheese shows this fall in Ithaca? I'm planning on doing the first 6 shows and was hoping to find a ride back to toronto from Ithaca.. otherwise I may just go on to the next 2 incidents in scranton > pittsburgh and fly home from there. Just trying to plan something.

  8. After going back and giving a good listen to all the BSC sets this summer, as good as Umphs were in their limited short sets, they never took it out there like some of their other shows in 2003-2005. The podcasts from this year really do highlight some of their best moments from each month. Definitely listen to podcasts 6-10, which feature mind blowing jams in april > may. Some of the Stews and JO's are amazing. Speaking of jams.. I can pretty much pick out stews now, especially after understanding the jam formula as described above, but I still have a hard time hearing Jazz Oddessey jams.

  9. Having an eraser is key. I can't stress this enough. I'm sure everyone has a different system for solving them, but they all involve an eraser. Monday's are usually pretty simple, but they get harder as the week goes on. You definately don't want to run out of eraser on a Friday puzzle. Then you're screwed.

    Good times, good times.

Ah.. I knew I wasn't the only one who noticed the difficulty progressing through the week. I think the same goes for crosswords too. Must be 'cause we've got more time on the weekends to solve these suckers.

Pencil helps, but honestly, I find when I do make a mistake, I only find out near the end. Everything looks like it fits and then BAM - you've doubled up and its waaayyy too hard to backtrack far enough to find your mistake, seeing as the placement of one number leads to the others. I just give up when I realize I've made a mistake.

  10. Anyone else addicted to this number puzzle?

It all started with the metro news.. now I do the star and globe everyday as well. I may just breakdown and buy a book of sudoku.

I can't possibly be alone. I've met so many other folks who are closet sudoku addicts. Share your approaches here now ;o)

  11. Haven't read the article myself, but wanted to comment how far message boards have come in the past 10 years.

If it weren't for phish and rec.music.phish, I would've never found the internet... I got myself an account with internex-online, toronto's first ISP, back in '94 just to check out RMP to find out how I could get more tapes of shows. Before I knew it, I was sending money to a complete stranger in the states so that they could do a phish tickets-by-mail for me - back when they didn't send tickets to canada.

So immediately, I had made some friends and naively trusted everyone out there. I even found myself going to rochester to check out some band named moe. and stayed at someone's house whom I had never met... so I must admit, my first impressions of the online community were much more than I expected - though I had met folks via BBS's prior to that.

But it didn't take long before the trolls started showing up, RMP grew waaayyy too big and then bad traders started popping up everywhere... now I guess its normal to hear so much negativity and strong opinions being expressed on message boards, but its neat to see how many little communities have been carved out of a non-physical, electronic world!!

  12. Next thing you know, he'll be begging to leave vegas after claiming his buckleys prize... Damn, if you're feet hurt now, how the hell are you going to make it through moe.down, or the next 10 yrs of your concert going experiences??! I just don't get it.. I think you deserve to have your feet amputated after that.

  13. I could've sworn I heard a 'cant turn you loose' last night. They were simulcasting the show on Q107.. I think I heard it around 9:45 or so.... The band even said it was the first time they played it, I havenoidea since I'm no stones fan.. just tuned in a for a sec and thought, yep - they sound as old as they are, good for them, but it ain't my cupotea.

  14. Hey bouche, I've been having fun with the google personalized page as well - just curious if you've been able to find any RSS feeds for sports scores.. I can find plenty of sports headlines, but not scores which is what I'd like to add if I can find it.
