Bring on the podcasts... I already stream music frmo the archive onto this little box. Being open source certainly has its advantages. Its like geek heaven all in a box ;o)

That's more like Del's forum ;o)
What we need here is a geek forum.
For boys 'n their toys.

You got it brad. The ad2k does only one thing: Analog > Digital conversion at 24bit resolution.
You need to feed it an analog signal from a pre-amp, it will give you a 24bit and 16bit signal simultaneously, from any of the 4 digital outputs on the back. There are 7 different algorithms for dithering down to the 16bit signal. The digital interface is only BNC, coaxial or AES/EBU.
Unfortunately, there is no optical out to feed your JB3.

Sweet.. my slimdevices squeezebox 2 takes RSS feeds. So now I can stream music from my computer while checking out jambands.ca without being at the computer... lol.

Seeing as this is a cdn tapers thread, I guess I will post my ad here first:
I'm planning on selling my Benchmark Sonic AD2K+ A/D converter. Any takers? Purchased for $1700 USD when the exchange was freakin' >1.4...will take waaaayyy less than that. I just don't use it enough to warrant keeping it, the V3 suits me just fine.
Though I do love the AD2k and still think, IMHO, its one of the best 24bit a/d converters on the market.

Anyone going? I'll likely be there... his tunes with the most recent lineup at 10k lakes sounds decent.
-
I also vote for kaspersky's AV. Its what I use...though I have yet to find viruses, it certainly uses less resources than NAV.
-
IMHO, you're better off defending yourself from spyware than virii. I've yet to be hit with viruses in several years but have been slowed down a few times with spyware and such.
I think a regular virus and adware scan coupled with a cautious approach to surfing the net will be secure enough. I don't like how antivirus programs noticably slow down PCs..at least high-level auto protect modes. PC-Cillin is one of the better ones out there..
BradM, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just get online with DSL, then go do the updates as needed. One thing I've always thought is, if everything is working, don't fix it if it ain't broken! I can't stand windows updates that end up causing me instabilities that were never there to begin with... just because your OS isn't 100% updated, doesn't mean it will automatically be attacked as soon as its 'online'. Just don't go straight to the porn and you'll be ok ;o)
I think being behind a router-based hardware firewall is easier to provide the same degree of security vs. software firewalls. No need to configure and specify which programs are compatible or authorized as 'safe'.... though I'm sure each have their adv and disadv.

Naptime goes along way too....catching all those zzzzz is like working overtime.

I love warm sounding hissss... add some warm pops to that too and I'm in analog heaven ;p)
As I said before, you can get plenty of analog warmth on the right playback system, since that is still in the analog realm. Get yourself a nice $10K tube amp and you'll be set!
-
Don't buy $0.99 tracks from iTunes, just go to www.allofmp3.com and get tunes in your format, at your specified compression rate and only pay $0.02 USD/meg of data. So for a buck, you can grab 50megs of mp3/ogg, which is probably about half an album of decent compressed audio.
Your credit card will show the ruble > USD $ conversion ;o)

Why would you want warmth added to everything?! I want transparency and clarity, so it sounds the way it was meant to sound. If something was meant to sound warm, then it will sound warm... if its supposed to be flat and crisp, then thats the way it is. Who says you can't have warm digital music? Besides, playback is still mostly analog... you can add plenty of warmth there - just get a tube amp! I agree, the analog stage is very important, especially since playback is still in the analog realm, which is why audiophiles spend thousands of $$$ on D/A and A/D conversion.
I think one of the main advantages of the digital realm is the hi-fidelity in reproduction. You can make plenty of exact copies and in a thousand years, it will still sound the same as it ever was. Why don't you get back to me when we're dead and tell me how your analog tapes are sounding then, assuming they haven't disintegrated.
There's plenty of love from me...for digital music ;o) Who said anything about compression? 24bit is where the detail's at.
And damn, why step into a 'digital music freaks' thread when digital music sucks?!?
Oh, I forgot. Its jerk week on the board ;o)
...dave, don't you have a DAT?! I'm assuming you transfer everything to analog tape for playback then? Do they still make maxell XLII's?!?

I think I'm not the only one around here who has gotten rid of most of their CDs and gone exclusively to archiving digital music on hard drives and DVDs as data.. but my one problem has been how to play back all this stuff on a stereo and have it sound good. I finally splurged and bought myself one of these puppys, the best toy I've gotten in a while:
The slimdevices Squeezebox 2.
This sucker is wireless and has an ethernet connection and decodes mp3/ogg/flacs from my computer and feeds a nice clean signal to my stereo... has a sweet screen that scrolls song titles This really is a digital music freaks' dream come true. All my music at my fingertips.
Whats more, I can start collecting all the .m3u files from the archive to stream as much GD as I want.. .this little box decodes that too.
To top it all off, the software that it interfaces with is completely open source. So its freaks programming for the freaks... loads of custom plugins and whatnot. I can even read canada.com news updates off the ticker of the squeezebox!
Can you tell I'm a geek who can't hold in his excitement? I'm sure there are others out there that would get off on this like me ;o)
Just thought I'd share my excitement!

Detroit > Burlington is looking tasty. I'll see if my body can hold up to 5 days of umphs!

As nice as the vegas shows are (video-wise), I still enjoy the dvds of the cinci show a lot more.. could have something to do with the fact that I was there and not in vegas. Actually, most of the dvd's from that 2003 tour are great...but vegas is better than the rest. PoG or Basher, you guys check out the 7/29 starlake narration yet? Regarding remixes too, I know many of the DVDs that have been sourced are slowly being remastered (or quickly in the case of the island tour) with sbd audio as it becomes available... the 45 minute duo+gordo foam is first that comes to mind. Sick.
I wish I could watch DVDs in my sleep, that seems to be the only time...

rar is a compression format like zip. Just get WinRAR and you'll be set.

I love how people who really dislike SCI always check out whats going on in SCI-related threads and generally chime in to express their hatred for all-things-SCI-related, usually not the music ;o)

I remember coming across this recently, someone incorporating the rental listings from craigslist.org with google maps! Pretty neat actually:

Personally, I don't mind the cheese hate. Being a cheese lover myself, I think it keeps the scene more pure and prevents it from growing into a schwilly, sketchy mess that is inevitable when 'jambands' grow to amphitheatre-sized crowds. Sort of like the moe. scene... I hope both these bands stay in theatres where the sound and view is usually great and the energy is tremendous. I would rather be with a bunch of fans that are truely there for the music, than just there to be seen or to get messed up.
On another note, I think the room at the docks sounded better for SCI than it did for any of the other bands throughout the day. That was certainly a boomy room. Very muddy... JonO did the best he could I think. I think xavier was even complaining about the bassyness while he was on stage performing!?

Trev, this is a great show. I've listened to it a couple times today followed by my daily dose of the toronto incident ;o) My fav is give me the love > Yo se... the lands end is nice too. The encore is fun, but I still like the 2nd night of schaumburg's encore more. UM comes out and rips up bridgeless > jam w/ sci > billie jean!!
I've heard the whole tour except last nights show in blossom, and the richmond set is definitely up
there.
Off to rochacha tomorrow!!!

I'd start with what you want out of it - power computing or portability/long battery life? Versitility in function/applications or simple use?
Will this be a semi-portable desktop replacement, or truely on-the-road computer?
Then go for a price range, that would determine what brand you could go for.
IBM's tend to be a bit more $$, but many of them are really good and built like tanks.
Personally, I would stay away from Dell's, unless you're on a tight budget, you'll get the most for your $$ from them.
Combination of portability and functionality at a moderate/high price - Toshiba..bar none.
There are many things to consider, too many options in fact. So the easiest way to narrow down your options is to know what you want and how much you're willing to spend..pretty much the same philosophy for most electronics.
