  1. Matt's Moondata/Labprojects nights are pretty much always at O Patro Vys, and are pretty infrequent these days. They used to be regularly once a month.

They tend to include guys like Stef Schnider, jeremy gara, Brad, Matt himself, Sarah Page, etc. Seen a good number of them and they are lots of fun.

Venues that do this sort of stuff now are Le Cagibi (very small shows), Casa, Sala Rossa, Divan,

There's also a whole francophone scene with a different set of players and even different venue choices. THat falls into the "musique actuelle" camp of Jean Deromme, Rene Lussier, Pierre Tanguay, etc. who are also very great but lean more toward the free jazz category. Lion d'Or is a choice venue for them as is Casa Obscura. Check out Mardi Spaghetti as an ongoing event that they play at:

  2. Lot of Cancon in the UK this summer. I'm going to be hitting Broken Social Scene, Think about Life, Wolf Parade, and hopefully Arcade Fire. Plus the end of the road fest in september seems to be like 50% Canadian artists for some reason (ok, not really 50% but LOTS)

Shain are you going to the Great Escape? I'll be at a few of those gigs.

  3. Could be great, but playing with some pretty sacred material here, so hope they do it right.

Late last night on Twitter, Bon Iver broke the news about a forthcoming John Prine tribute album featuring cover songs by Conor Oberst, Justin Vernon, Josh Ritter, My Morning Jacket, the Avett Brothers, and 7 others. Dubbed Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine, the record will hit shelves via Prine’s record label, Oh Boy, early this summer (June 22).

Until then, you can check out Vernon’s cover of “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow),†which is streaming at NPR, here, My Morning Jacket’s live rendition of “All the Best†(as well as a slew of other MMJ covers) here, and Conor Oberst with Bright Eyes covering Prine’s “Crazy As a Loon†(he chose a different tune for this tribute album, here.

  4. considering attendance is capped at 5000, you won't get a Radiohead or other band of that stature playing, but the trade-off is that you can basically stroll up to the front row or thereabouts between just about any set and catch what you like. Walked up to the front on a whim this year and caught Steve Earle do a great set of Townes Van Zandt covers on about 1 minute's notice.

Great way to spend a long weekend if you're going to be in the UK.

  5. For those of you who saw my posts about this over the summer, here are the first batch of bands. Many more to come!

  6. I'm not much of a stat watcher but I heard an interesting stat last night. I can't claim to have even really been aware of how subpar our goaltending is.

Apparently our defence allows the 2nd fewest shots in the NHL while our goalies somehow have the 2nd worst save percentage. In spite of this we currently have a playoff spot!!!

Imagine how well we would be doing if our goalies were even average let alone really good.......

I don't think most people realize what a good job our 'd' is really doing.....I know I didn't....

Read another piece saying that statistically so far this season this is the worst goaltending tandem in Sens history (i.e. worse than the Tugger era). If that's not saying a lot, for a team that's never had consistent goaltending, I don't know what is!

  7. as an aside, if you ever go to a Swiss league hockey game, they have raclette and wine vendors outside of the rink for pre-game snacks (cheese, potato, pickle and optional dried meat). Makes for a killer snack on a cold day!
