  1. Okay, so here are the 10 gems my iPod came up with:

    1. Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance - Frank Zappa

Owning any Zappa really requires no explanation. He is pure genius! I believe him to be one of the most talented musicians/composers who ever lived, but I think I really dig him for his humour. "We're Only In It For the Money" will always be one of my favourite albums. Anyone seen the "Baby Snakes" movie?

    2. Elephant Parade - Jon Brion

The Eternal Sunshine soundtrack and movie are definite favourites of mine. Brion's compositions and the other artists he chose for this soundtrack are amazing. However, my iPod freezes whenever Mr. Blue Sky is played. :( Luckily the random feature didn't pick that one. :P

    3. Tiny Cities Made of Ashes - Modest Mouse

I have loved these guys for ages. And, unlike many long-time fans, I really dig the new album. I don't know if their Grammy nomination will spoil their sound (as speculated) and turn them into hit producing sell-outs. Time will tell and I will cross that bridge when I come to it. For now though, they are at the top of my play list.

    4. Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat - Bob Dylan

Whoa! Of all the Dylan I have it's interesting to me that something off of Blonde on Blonde would randomly come up out of 30GB of music. Hmmmm...ever since I moved from London this album has marked the pivotal events in my life. After a family death I walked around in my parents' front yard kicking leaves, staring at jet streams left in the autumn sky and listening to Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks. After about 2 weeks of doing this daily I came inside and shelved the album. It has popped up at funny times since.

    5. Let Him Run Wild - The Beach Boys

The first concert I went to as a child was to see these wannabe surfer Cali boys. I still love their sound (by "their" I mean Brian Wilson). There are few things in my life as nostalgic as this music. I still remember clear as day riding around in my Dad's boat listening to Beach Boys 8-tracks. How friggin' old am I?

    6. Car (acoustic) - Built To Spill

One of the best songs ever! An old friend sent me a BTS/MM mixed disc when he was in Prague. I've loved both ever since. "I wanna see movies of my dreams".

    7. Tripoli - Pinback

This is another great tune. It reminds me of singing in rounds in elementary school. For some reason few people have heard of this band. One reason could be their highly unfortunate name. ;) I put this song on a mixed disc for a friend who was driving out to Banff. He said he must've listened to this song hundreds of times. It's one I'll never get tired of either.

    8. Love - G. Love & Graph Nobel

This is one of the tracks from a Peace Songs compilation that I got for Christmas from my Mom. It was done as a fundraiser for War Child Canada (a charity which her and I both support). A lot of great artists on the album, but some I could definitely live without (Avril comes to mind).

    9. Rascuache - At the Drive-In

Vaya is a great album to listen to when you're driving and tired. :D I have a lot of highly emotional/melancholy music in my collection. That collection wouldn't be complete without a little scream-until-it-feels-like-you-were-kicked-in-the-throat rage music. This is my album for when I'm angry (or drinking with Brent).

    10. Radio Cure - Wilco

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is my favourite Wilco album for sure. It's funny though, the lyrics in this song kind of changed for me. I used to think it went "oh, distance has a way of making love understandable". Suddenly one day I heard it for what really is "oh, distance has no way of making love understandable". I guess I was just hearing what I wanted to. The actual lyrics hold more truth.

Okay, so the random feature on my iPod is far better than that of my computer (which always seems to find Bobby Darin's Beyond the Sea out of thousands of picks. Ba! Thank goodness nothing embarrassing popped up. With all of the boy bands I listen to I really am surprised. :P Ha ha!

  2. Good HipHop:

    Blackalicious

Definitely check this out Beats! And I third what Low Roller said.

    Also worth a listen:

A Tribe Called Quest (Bonita Applebaum era)

Kool Keith/Dr. Octagon ("Holy jumping jackfish!")

    Kid Koala

    Charlie Parker (all good)

    Oscar Peterson

Stan Getz (pretty much as good as it gets)

    Django Reinhardt

    Morphine

(obviously a mix of different catagories)

    Happy listenin' Beats! :D

  3. Well, I just got the word from a little birdie that I am going to be in Canada on and around May 7th

Oooooooh, May 7th is becoming quite a popular day. Perhaps I'll see you there Steve. Have a safe border crossing! :)

  4. Chocolate Jesus doing Julia on the I Am Sam soundtrack ... one of the worst things ever.

Ewwwww!!! I totall forgot about that bastardized soundtrack. Ick! Right you are Skelter! Argh! Covering the Beatles is pretty much wrong. The only cover I can think of that I don't mind is Hey Jude done by The Mutato Muzika Orchestra (from the Royal Tenenbaums). Could be because that's one of my all-time favourite flicks though. ::

  5. why would we expect artists in any medium to remain stagnant and tied only to the subject or media they know best?

This is a great point Polkaroo. I think one of the best things about being in such a highly competitive field is that you are required to constantly learn and challenge yourself. You can be swept by the wayside mighty quickly if you don't. Same goes for any profession, but the evolution and constant metamorphosis of photography is something I have a close love/hate relationship with. It never allows for boredom, that's for sure. Photography HAS to be a very innovative field. We are always fu©king around with new techniques/equipment/etc. Photoshop greatly allows for this. Most photogs I know are very experimental, both behind the computer and behind the lens.

I used to swear that I'd never switch to digital photography. However, after considering the many advantages (long-term cost, turnaround time, more environmental kindness) I gave it a try. I can't imagine how I could possibly work in the field now without the digital technology that has been made available. I either have high volume or commercial clients. It would be almost impossible for me to compete using conventional methods.

With any techologically based career or medium I think it is very important to remember that the equipment we use is being updated and changed on a regular basis. Photography is VERY expensive. The same goes for the equipment musicians use...high overhead. It is very difficult to ever get out from underneath your debts. There never seems to be enough memory (cards or computer), lenses, CDRs, paper, inks, etc. Digital is saving me a bundle though. When I first studied photography I was spending approx. $2000 a month US on supplies. Thank goodness those days are over!

All photographers (writers, musicians, etc.) may have to whore their talents out to some extent to pay the bills. This is generally an accepted fact. We shoot weddings (puke!) with the hope that we can make a few coins to get out and shoot more shows and festivals. The bulk of my business has been weddings, commercial advertising (so whorish) and copy work/restoration. Stock photo agencies are definitely challenging the little guy in the same way that the easy-to-use digitals are taking down the portraiture business. I end up keeping very busy with these ventures hoping that one day there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. Once upon a time I thought I was going to be a writer. Instead, I got into photography to tell stories and show people things they may never see...using the most immediate medium I could think of. To spend my day retouching wedding photos and creating more advertising pollution, I can sure understand how frustrated a musician stuck writing jingles would feel.

  6. LOL

The idea so far is to have a night shot of a girl trying to get out of a tent with a flashlight. Not my concept, but I can work with that. One idea for a caption was "O.B....Yeah, it sucks." Again, not my idea. Open to suggestions though.

  7. Basil is my favorite and if you have more than you need you can always make pesto.

I usually make 2 batches of pesto per season. The second one takes 2 days to make and I usually end up with 40+ containers (hopefully enough to last the winter). They freeze well and make great little gifts when going visiting. You can never have enough pesto! I think I've eaten it every day since mid-October. :D I only have 7 containers left out of 41! :: :: ::

  8. jamband tampon!"

Boss (to Kaidy Mae): Clean out your desk. Don't ask me for a reference.

Ha ha haaaa! Actually bradm, there is a camping/festival theme to it. Perhaps I could throw some wooklettes in there somewhere. ::

  9. Even tougher is getting the opportunity to shoot the things that truly interest and intrigue you

Just to reiterate the above statement:

I was just asked to work on an O.B. tampon campaign. :( Business isn't booming.

  10. my close circle of photog friends, were some of the most inspirational people that waltzed into my life.

Amen Guigsy! I'm still stunned at times how many true friends I made in that program. Even the characters I downright loathed, I still learned something from.

Being a photog right now sure is tough. Even tougher is getting the opportunity to shoot the things that truly interest and intrigue you (no more Bridezillas!). I never should have tried to turn something that I love into a career. ::

I hope we all keep inspiring each other.

  11. Scared to fly though...HELP ME!

Bach's Rescue Remedy spray is great for anxiety and fear. You should be able to find it in any health food store. It comes in a yellow box and is around $13.

Melatonin (3mg) really helps if you get jetlag too. Gooooood night!

However, the old valium/white wine combo has never failed me. Limit the wine though. I made the mistake of getting drunk on a plane once. It was the most miserable 14 hours of my life. I actually turned [color:"green"]green. :(

Still, no Wilco? What goes on? ::

  13. Salvia

Ooooohhhh! Brilliant idea. I can't wait to watch my garden grow. ;)

Watch zucchinis closely...if ignored, they get to be like 2 feet long. Sneaky buggers!

Rhubard is especially delicious in pies.

Romaine lettuce is pretty easy, but you should tie it.

    Cherry tomatoes...yum!

    Beets

    Carrots

    Peas

    Green & yellow beans

To get some greens all year round why not try sprouting?

One thing I did figure out last summer: Peppers and radishes are total bastards to grow! :( If anyone has any suggestions...

  14. "What's the difference between you and a mallard with a cold? One's a sick duck and I can't remember how it ends, but your mother's a whore. "

Whaaaaahahaaahahahahahahaaaaa! Booche, you're right. I'm not going to get anything done today. How that differs from any other day, I'm not too sure. ;)

Jack Johnson on SNL March 12th!
