  1. Parrhesia

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Jump to: navigation, search

In the classic discipline of rhetoric, parrhesia is a figure of speech described as: to speak candidly or to ask forgiveness for so speaking [1].

The term is borrowed from the Greek παÏÏησία (παν = all + Ïησις / Ïημα = utterance / speech) meaning literally "to speak everything" and by extension, "to speak freely", "to speak boldly", "boldness".

    [edit] Modern scholarship

Michel Foucault developed the concept of parrhesia as a mode of discourse in which one speaks openly and truthfully about her or his opinions and ideas without the use of rhetoric, manipulation, or generalization. Foucault's use of parrhesia, he tells us, is troubled by our modern day Cartesian model of evidential necessity. For Descartes, truth is the same as the undeniable. Whatever can be doubted must be, and, thus, speech that is not examined or criticized does not necessarily have a valid relation to truth.

There are several conditions upon which the traditional Ancient Greek notion of parrhesia relies. One who uses parrhesia is only recognized as doing so if he (and it is "he" when we consider Greek teachings) holds a credible relationship to the truth, if he serves as critic to either himself or popular opinion or culture, if the revelation of this truth places him in a position of danger and he persists in speaking the truth, nevertheless, as he feels it is his moral, social, and/or political obligation. Further, a user of parrhesia must be in a social position less empowered than those to whom he is revealing. For instance, a pupil speaking the truth to an instructor would be an accurate example of parrhesia, whereas an instructor revealing the truth to his or her pupils would not.

Foucault (1983) sums up the Ancient Greek concept of parrhesia as such:

"More precisely, parrhesia is a verbal activity in which a speaker expresses his personal relationship to truth, and risks his life because he recognizes truth-telling as a duty to improve or help other people (as well as himself). In parrhesia, the speaker uses his freedom and chooses frankness instead of persuasion, truth instead of falsehood or silence, the risk of death instead of life and security, criticism instead of flattery, and moral duty instead of self-interest and moral apathy."

A related use of parrhesia is found in the Greek New Testament, where it means "bold speech," the ability of believers to hold their own in discourse before political and religious authorities (e.g. Acts 4:13: "Now when they saw the boldness [την παÏÏησίαν] of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized them as companions of Jesus."). See Heinrich Schlier, "παÏÏησία, παÏÏησιάζομαι," Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, Gerhard Kittel and Gerhard Friedrich, Eds. Ann Arbor: Eerdmans, 1967. Vol. V, pp. 871ff.

  2. You are all completely off your nut. From how you lay it out William I'm supposed to say something like 'respectfully guys in Chameleon Project, and I've got mad love for your whole thing and totally dig on how you really build a break and get the crowd going (a total lie). I really love how the audience is so into what they're doing (while whacked on E, Ketamine and Cocaine- another total lie). Maybe you guys could try doing something maybe a little more socially conscious and less drug oriented and people might appreciate that a bit more'. First of all that is riddled with lies, second it is not me or my style, third of all it completely betrays the fact that I actually know what the fuck I'm talking about and make a living at it.

As for questions surrounding my credibility whether StoneMtn. (and in all fairness I could care less about what a hippy lawyer from Vancouver thinks - I mean really I just don't even give a remote shit- you all apparently obsessed with what others think) or others. I'm not concerned about my crebility in the jamband scene or any other scene. I have a lot of crebibility, I'm a credible resource precisely because I don't lay on the sunshine vibe like JayDawg (who is a paid publicist and promoter who is in the business of saying endlessly nice things about artists he may or not believe in - God Made Me Funky is for instance an absolutely awful group and yet he sings their praises - he is in fact paid to).

I don't get paid to speak my mind as I have here. In fact I have to pay for it by attending to the plebian concerns of ignorant people who type well before they think.

  3. You are right. Because this crowd is delusional and in denial about their drug and alcohol addictions I should renounce the last ten years of my life and give up all credibility I have built in this scene.

I care I really care. That is the problem. Im looking at the man in the mirror. Why dont all of you?

  4. Sorry I thought he was D Rock.

I'm not fishing or phishing William. You're a good guy but not a very good promoter. I brought Jay into the fold of concert promotion in Nova Scotia. Let's not forget who was in this game ages ago and who is just a bank roll. Take some responsibility for the fact that you let the crowd get over capacity and that the crowd was more out of their mind than any jamband show or rave I've attended in ages.

  5. Hey D Rawk why don't you stay in PEI and continue ripping off musicians for their livelihood.

For the record both Evolve Festival and Shoreline festival left behind massive debts this year. For instance the Wassabi Collective refuses to play Evolve this year until they are at least paid for last year. It would help, if you want to point the finger, if you had any professionalism, respect or decency of your own.

  6. I promised myself I'd never use this loser board again and frankly I've only read a handful of your loser responses.

The friend of mine is a tough chick and she's been through some heavy shit and this was intolerable. If you want to make light of it go for it but you're the one who looks like a massive fucking tool. We wanted to stick around and see KJ Sawka, that's why we came and paid $20 - instead we left about a half hour after we came because as mentioned the venue was over capacity and the capacity that was there was whacked way past their due date.

Case in point in front of the venue some serious Om wookie rolled up to us and the first thing he wanted to inform us of was that he'd just done a big line of K and Coke. Way to go Guy! I'm really proud of you, way to put yourself in the Hole then try and crawl out of it!

As far as the band well clearly despite the fact that I'm a full time music journalist, I don't drink, I've been writing about improvisational music in Canada since before jambands.ca existed- not to mention I've been a head for longer than almost all this board- clearly some believe I am still not entitled to an opinion.

Irrespective of the lame scene we dealt with in terms of predatory K'd out tweakers- not so much offensive as massively annoying (like most of you for instance)- the music was truly derivative.

I have never enjoyed Chameleon Project. The drummer is marginally good, the bass players concepts are pretty weak and lacking and the guitarist is a fucking joke. A pedal board and some dude playing guitar. I really really tried to just get into it and enjoy but they had no concept of how to build the tension and release of a Break- which is what Jungle, Breaks and Hip Hop are based on. Instead they meander about touching on a variety of faded styles and pander to their audience who is so touched in the head from the copious quantities of animal tranquilizers that they'd meow at the moon.

  8. Hey this is just a notice. Frankly me (Luke Bowden) and my friend who runs an influential toronto music site www.torontoindie.com went out to see Chameleon Project and couldn't stick around for Sawka who I really wanted to see because way too many guys at that show were staring at her in a sexual, rude and stupid way.

Lay off the K, Coke and E you fucking tweaker fucks. I'm an old school junglist and Marcus himself was up in the house that night and frankly I was embarassed for all of you. Tweaker sausage party central. Alot of you were fucked off your fucking asses and not dancing well or at all and just fucking losing it up with the losers big time. If that was a Rave I'd have left that room in a second.

We both agreed before we were forced to leave- let's be clear here she pointed out that guys kept staring at her which I didn't notice at first. Then I started to notice, every single gooned fuck was glaring at her and wouldn't stop. I put my arms around her and I'm a big dude and you tweaked fuckers wouldn't lay up. One guy almost ran into a person he was staring away so long. We figured later you were all so sketched out and tweaky that you were just salivating over the fresh meat at your sausage party. In any case it was really not cool and a couple of you are lucky I didn't fucking rock your heads in.

Jay Cleary, who is a friend, can keep our $20 cover because I likely owe it to him anyways.

On a musical level we both agreed that Chameleon Projects grooves and breaks were derivative and lacklustre and that that band should lay off the chems and the electronics. That's not jungle or drum and bass it's wanky drum and bass grooves, way too much effects on a shit guitar style and basically a really annoying band with little going for it. The fact that the Grateful Dead's legacy is somehow insulted by this group deeply offends me. Remember with electronic effects 'it's the gunner not the gun that takes the shot'.

This isn't a rant. We were really pissed and you will read about this in print. We were both sober and both music critics and the music and especially the crowd sucked massive balls.

    Hey what's up?

So viral marketing is good but not where it crosses over with brusque honesty qua assholish behaviour. Wholesale censorship is reasonable when any single person deems the normative standards of the community breached. Agents of censorship deem their views reasonable when they can conceive of no other option.

  10. I Started A Joke (The Wallflowers)

I started a joke. Which started the whole world crying.

But I didn't see that the joke was on me.

Oh, no, I started to cry. Which started the whole world laughing.

Oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.

I looked at the skies. Running my hands over my eyes.

And I fell out of bed. Hurting my heads from things that I said.

Till I finally died. Which started the whole world living.

Oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.

I looked at the skies. Running my hands over my eyes.

And I fell out of bed. Hurting my head from things that I said.

Till I finally died. Which started the whole world living.

Oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.

Oh, no, that the joke was on me. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Hey gang I've now gotten two nasty emails from some kids I guess. No matter how many times we explain it Abe and Luke are two different people, Abe no post on Sanctuary, Abe no give shit if people have nothing else better to do, Abe no write anything about BNB EVER on any board or site. Only after a flat out personal letter that was indeed rude and nasty from the band.

I've only met them once or twice and I figure because they've known Luke for a while they were to cowardly to dis him, but my response is always nastier which is why I don't write any reviews of shows or anything about anyone personally except Osama.

Canadian Fans not the Bands are the reason I can't wait to go back to the USA (but the dollar is worthless here) and out of insecure Canada and get on with life. I never went to shows to make friends, I went with them. I don't want white dreads, I go for the music and always have. To me NorthernHeads is about entertaining not information, not just there to make you feel warm and fuzzy giving off the positive vibes just the opposite. The point is we're taking a chance. We hit and we miss, and I love controversy. And its fun.

NOW you can reply to what I write. And please do.

Content is King, its a slow week

-ABE (not Luke) fuck you guys are dim for teenagers

ps. I think its awesome that we could piss people off so much that they take so much time to argue over the net, fuck you guys.

Letters to the Devil from sad people and angry people:

    Well Kung,

Here's the deal as I see it about your perspicacious rantings on the phish sanctuary. You've taken space on your front page to slag off BNB over an unjust assessment of your "opinion" of the band. Wrong ! When you get slagged off on Phishsanctuary it's because you are rude, misguided and incorrect in the things you write. Nobody cares if you like the band or not, if you thought they didn't play well or not, it's the way in which you convey your message in an unthought-out manner that sparks the ire of those who see your mistakes and see the shaky ground upon which your soapbox stands. Yell and scream about anything you like, just do it professionally. Or at least think through what you write before you post it.

    perspi?cacious?ness n.

    shrewd (shrd) adj.

    shrewd?er, shrewd?est

Characterized by keen awareness, sharp intelligence, and often a sense of the practical. Disposed to artful and cunning practices; tricky. Sharp; penetrating: a shrewd wind.

[Middle English shrewed, wicked, from shrew, rascal. See shrew.]

    shrewdly adv.

    Synonyms: shrewd, sagacious, astute, perspicacious

These adjectives mean having or showing keen awareness, sound judgment, and often resourcefulness, especially in practical matters.

Shrewd suggests a sharp intelligence, hardheadness, and often an intuitive grasp of practical considerations: ?He was too shrewd to go along with them upon a road which could lead only to their overthrow? (J.A. Froude).

Sagacious connotes prudence, discernment, and farsightedness: ?He was observant and thoughtful, and given to asking sagacious questions? (John Galt).

    Luke,

I just want to let you know that I respect the courage that you have shown in posting an anti opinion rather than a pro opinion. There is a clear lack of objectivity amongst 'the scene' and your BNB debate makes that clear. If people like you didn't have the balls to stir the pot a little the bar would never be raised and the imposition of mediocrity would be suffice. It seems like some people's opinions are crafted with self-serving intentions (i.e. BNB won't like me if I admit they are shit right now and don't kiss their asses) rather than the evident truth (i.e. they are not at their peak). Don't take shit from Phish Sanctuary either - I guarantee they've gotten more hits since you started this debate. There is one thing that makes me uncomfortable though - you are naming names. Don't let it get personal, it looks bad on you.

You and your site are the Kings of Controversy and I'll keep checking in and grinning,

    Mike

I guess I forgot that Abe and I were always WAY better at this than the bouchards and the entire nation of 'heads' put together.
