Riddim Riders return to The Casbah on Saturday June 5th. Always a good time and definitely a fabulous way to get your summer groove on. Expect some brand new tunes and solid vibes guaranteed.

Riddim Riders play a mix of originals and classics from the 70s, 80s and 90s. A lot of Jamaican standards, some that people will recognize right away, and others that only long time reggae fans will know. Focus is on tunes with conscious, spiritual lyrics, and good vibes.

Excerpts from Riddim Riders show review

    By Lynn Peppas, Welland Tribune

The sun (was) shinin', the weather was sweet ...

No truer words were spoken - or in this case, sung - by Downtown Welland series' guests Riddim Riders.

The group performed numerous Bob Marley covers such as Sun is Shining last Saturday evening at Welland's Civic Centre, in one of the most tropical-flavoured and upbeat Niagara Blues & Jazz society concerts of this season…One essential component to their originality was keyboardist Erold Dailey's contemporary hiphop contribution to most of the songs…

For their first set the band coloured within the lines, but in the second there was a lot of scat referencing that blurred the lines of reggae.

The Riddim Riders took often covered songs like Cat Stevens' The First Cut is the Deepest and 'reggaesized' it, while layering in verses of other rock-folk songs such as Knocking on Heaven's Door and Lauren Hill riffs as well. These wonderful surprise twists in classic reggae songs made the music freshly unpredictable.

Even though the reggae rhythms and fusion of hiphop beats made it impossible to sit still, this concert was tropically laid-back and relaxed, with masterful vocals, musicianship, and interpretations…

    CREEPIN’ CHESTER’S REVENGE

    Hamilton's tallest band returns!!!

Twenty years after (or thereabouts) infecting Hamiltonians with their untethered, tasty toons, Steeltown's finest folk-rock-jazz-blues-punk-psychedelic combo has emerged from their own towering shadows to shake the city one more time.

Those who recall the blood, sweat n beers spilt over 7 years will be drawn back to the Corktown to endure more Friday, June 11th as the five original members reprise their roles in, "the return of Creepin' Chester!!"

Creepin' Chester - Jim Beer, Stu Griffett, Jamie Shea, Jean Vanhaelen, and Rob Willett - unite forces once more, tapping into the murky, moving sounds that run like bridged-over creeks into Hamilton Harbour.

    ----

    Make Joy Cry

Make Joy Cry was formed in late 1991 by guitarist-songwriters Daniel Wintermans and Calvin Hager. Bassist Paul McConnell and drummer Nick Girard were soon added to flesh out ideas. MJC's first show was at the Corktown in late July of 1992, complete with double-projections and 'audio enhancements'. Ahead of their time, and like a shooting star, they burned fast and bright; trashed the 'Trasheteria' and made friends at 'Amigo's'; recorded a dozen songs in various versions in various studios; and eventually broke up in 1997 against the burgeoning atmosphere of disposable pop music.

In late 1999 CH and DW re-emerged as an ambient two-piece, 'head phone over tone', which was augmented by various guest musicians (one of whom being drummer Stu Griffett of Chester fame). HPOT went on hiatus in 2005.

In early 2010, DW ran into PMcC in a local bar, and after a call to CH, MJC was resurrected. No-one has heard from Nick in at least 10 years.

  4. Was that the Bluesfest show? I saw Feat at Ontario Place (revolving stage) with Dr. John, BB King, Pinetop Perkins (amongst a few others).

That was my first Feat show. Aug 24, 1994. What a blast.

The other Hamilton show was at Club 77 if I recall correctly. I thought that was a great show. Bela Fleck played that club too which was also a HUGE treat. Is that place even in existence still? I think it changed hands. As far as I know, for the most part it operated as a generic, lugan, tramp yourself up and get into a fight type of place. But the few times that briguy (i think?) got a hold of it to bring some quality acts in was pure magic.

yep you got it. I put Feat in Hamilton three times. Club 77 the first two times and Pepper Jack's the third time. First show was May 29 2003 with Fat Cats opening, second time was June 22 2004 with Diesel Dog opening, and PJC on Sep 8 2006 with JP Riemens and The Bar Flies.

Flecktones were amazing in Club 77, and Scofield. Hopefully do them all again someday.

See you in Toronto on Aug 8th!

    CAVALIERS!

Alternative country musicians Cavaliers! have a steadily growing

audience for their sweet and harmonious vocals and the downcast

beauty of their music. In April 2007, Mich Verrier and Adam

Pariselli, two members of the band The Expos, approached

Britton Allison to begin collaborating on this alt country project.

The trio then found Dan Roth, who used atmospheric electric

guitar to fill out the sound. Later, Tyler Leck joined the band to

create perfectly steady and outstanding rhythm. After recording

their debut album with Mitch Girio during the summer of 2007,

they are now ready to take the world by storm. These multi-

talents, all hailing from different genres of music, have come

together to form something unique and completely undeniable.

    MARC OLSZEWSKI

Marc Olszewski is a singer/songwriter from the Hamilton area

and was once part of the duo "i&i", a staple of the Hess Village music

scene in the mid 1990's. "From early on, I realized that the most

important thing in music - for me - was a good song," he says.

"That song could be by Richard Thompson or it could be by

Blondie.... but without good songs there's not much to build

upon." His set at the Casbah Lounge will feature original material

as well as a couple of favorites from his personal collection.

  7. from Brodie (Casbah promoter) on another message board. Thought it was kind of neat.

"The Casbah's "soft-opening" was on December 31st, 2000, and on stage that night was a funky little band called 'THE INSPIRATORS'.

Chris Briscoe and his partner were scrambling to get a temporary liquor license so they could open on New Year's, and then they were shutting down til the Frank Black show 3 weeks later.

He called in the heavy-weights to serve bar that night. Yours truly, and Sunnie Napoli. We ruled that night ;)

The Inspirators, now a band that morphed into The Riddim Riders, weren't too shabby either ;)
