MoMack
Trying to decide how beat up I'll get if I post this on the Queen's Faculty of Law listserve. As you can imagine its mostly right wing assholes and sell outs. (no offence meant to folks here... I'm drunk and depressed). Just got the disc tonight... Here it is: Don’t Let it Happen Here One day they came and they took the communists, And I said nothing because I was not a communist. Then one day they burned the Catholic churches, And I said nothing because I was born a Protestant. One day they came and took the unionists, And I said nothing because I was not a unionist. One day they came and they took the people of the Jewish faith, And I said nothing because I had no faith left. Then one day they came and they took me, And I could say nothing because I was as guilty as they were, For not speaking out and saying that all men have a right to freedom. Oh lord, don’t let it happen here… Yes, I was guilty.. as guilty as they were for not speaking out and saying that all men and women have a right to freedom. So… don’t let it happen here. -Charles Mingus
hamilton
Hey - Mingus didn't actually write that. It was originally written by a Protestant clergyman in Nazi Germany (no, I can't remember his name) who really did witness these events in the '30s. Not that it matters who wrote it - the message is more important than authorship. And, needless to say (but I'll say it anyway), Charles Mingus kicks ass. Have a nice day (or night, or whatever). MoMack
Its Dreyfus . Distribution by Koch International USA CB 811 FDM 36603-2 Not really sure what that last shit is but it looked important... its a 1999 release... good stuff
hamilton
I was a little confused by the 1999 release date, so I assumed it must have been a compliation, but I was wrong. Doing a little web search, I discovered that this is a Mingus Big Band album - younger musicians who perform Mingus compositions, rather than a band lead by Mingus himself. Still, I bet it's really good. In my opinion (as useless as it may be), Mingus was one of the best jazz composers ever. Another "non-Mingus Mingus" album you might want to check out is, ummm.... Mingus the 1979 Joni Mitchell album on which she sets lyrics to Mingus compositions. Quite nice, especially late at night or on a grey, rainy Sunday morning. Cheers! Brian.
