DevO
Carolyn Mark, Luther Wright, Jenny Whiteley, Oh Susanna! For ten years Carolyn Mark has hosted a weekly open stage in Victoria BC, called The Hootenanny. In the fall of 2002, she sent marching orders to her Ontario buddy, Luther Wright, to set up a Hootenanny show in Kingston. He did so with his trademark panache, fleshing out the ranks with their compadres Oh Susanna, Jenny Whiteley and a smattering of special guests (including Sarah Harmer, Ford Pier, and Joey Wright). This past summer the whole lot reunited for two sold-out shows in the Kingston area, one being a moonlit cruise on the Island Queen paddle-wheeler that two-stepped its way through the scenic thousand islands accompanied by sweet, original, roots music. The format of the Hootenanny show is a series of three song sets from each featured artist and whomever they choose from the pool of available (and well-dressed) talent, often recruiting local country stars/singer-songwriter types. Throughout the evening Miss Carolyn holds court between performances with her trademark shoot-from-the-hip humour and snappy introductions. Beyond the excellent songs and music the show is just as much about the casual, feel-good camaraderie between the musicians, which makes for a very special evening of old-style entertainment. Now with a shared sense of purpose and invigorating zeal, Carolyn, Oh Susanna, Luther, Jenny and their prize posse of pickers and grinners propose to bring this here Hootenanny on tour! You'll be astounded by the talents of these minstrels, who between them have released a dozen of the finest collections of music this country has ever heard. Be the first in line to see what will undoubtedly be a magical, memorable night of music. Dr. J
Saw these guys when they played Maberly. Sarah Harmer was the guest. A ton of fun. Carolyn Mark is a riot and IMO Jenny Whiteley's CD "Hopetown" was one of the best of the year last year.Worth catching for sure.
