CBC RADIO TWO's "IN PERFORMANCE: THE WORLD"

A national radio program of Canadian roots and world music live in concert

presents:

A special collaborative concert featuring

BEYOND THE PALE and CREAKING TREE STRING QUARTET

Broadcasting live across Canada

FRIDAY APRIL 22, 8pm, CBC RADIO TWO

That’s FM 94.1 in the Toronto area, or follow the link below to find a radio frequency in your region

Recorded live at Toronto's Glenn Gould Studio in February 2005, this extraordinary concert brought together two of Canada's finest acoustic roots ensembles, sharing and comparing their energetic and daring musical fusions, encompassing such diverse styles as Klezmer, Balkan, Bluegrass, Jazz, Reggae, Funk, and much more! If you missed the show live the first time around catch it now in its national radio broadcast premiere. And if you were one of the 340 people in that enthusiastic sold-out audience, well, thanks for helping make it such a special night. Perhaps you’ll enjoy reliving the occasion, and having your friends hear what they missed!

The 75-minute broadcast will feature a “best of” from the evening, with 20-25 minute individual sets by each group, followed by a powerful climax featuring all 10 musicians of both groups combined into one massive “chamber-folk” orchestra. The broadcast will also include an interview by host Matt Galloway with Beyond the Pale’s Eric Stein and Creaking Tree’s Andrew Collins, discussing this special event.

Hope you can tune it in and listen!

I caught the last 20 minutes or so. Some good interview stuff with guys from both bands... talking about how they are similar and different. Talking about how Creaking Tree should be classified not as 'bluegrass' and that they didn't mind the tag 'chamber grass' as at least it distinguishes them from 'bluegrass' which they feel is not an accurate label.

I kept on listening to CBC for the next hour and a half after the show. Crazy stuff!!! I forget all what was played but the most abstract was definitely the live 'Shteem Whistle' (not sure on the spelling) they played. They are a Swiss band and it was from a festival in Montreal. Some yodelling, some accordian, lots of screams. It was awesome music to drive in the rain to! Downright scary at points!
