Seaweed could end junk food obesity

Obesity associated with eating too much junk food could become a thing of the past following a scientific breakthrough.

According to British scientists, fast food high in fat and calories could be made healthier by adding extracts from exotic seaweed.

The seaweed extract, called alginate, could be used to increase the fibre content of pies, burgers, cakes and other high fat foods.

Eh?

Kelco has been selling alginate by the drumful to the food industry for a looong time. What do you think gives Dairy Queen cones their consistency?

Next time you're out shopping, look at the labels. Alginate is commonly used as a thickener.

(BTW, last time I checked, McDonalds used carboxymethylcellulose to thicken shakes. The stuff is indigestible. Yuck.)
