So the thing is, I have cable internet, which I run into an old computer which is running router/firewall software. The spits the network out to a hub, which my machines run off. Could I plug a wireless router into that hub, and sort of start a new mini wireless network, on top of the local network already running? So a sub net or something? My system is running great like it is, I don't really want to change my hole setup to wireless, just be able to have some wireless access?Make any sense? secondtube Posted September 30, 2005 Report Share Posted September 30, 2005 its been a few years BUT, this is what i think ya need to do (or can do)...put a second nic card in the old computer, run the wireless router off the second nic card, and you should be fine. What i'd like to do is plug the wireless router into my hub. So it would get an internal ip like 192.168.1.5Just not sure if that works or not. And don't want to spend the cash if it won't. I'm a network architech by trade and I have the exact same scenario setup in my office.I assume that you have the PC that's running the firewall also distibuting IP addresses to your internal network. Is that correct? If so, you'll just want to either configure the WAP (wireless access point) to pass DHCP requests onto the network so that the firewall machine can provide IP addresses to wireless hosts as well, or, configure the WAP to provide addresses itself that are valid on your network. So for example I've got pc's connected that use dhcp to get internal ip's like 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3 etc... secondtube Posted September 30, 2005 Report Share Posted September 30, 2005 your going to have to tell your wireless router not to work as a dhcp server, as your pc is already doing that....as willy says, you'll have to set the router to pass through the dhcp requests....you also have the option of setting the whole network up static, as its only a few pc's....but either way, it'll be easy. The trick was that the connection going from my hub to the wireless router needed to go into one of the lan ports, not the internet port. Strange. But it's working, and I now have a wireless node my network. Wahoo! Of course I have no idea how secure it is, I suppose there could be some dude parked on my street downloading kiddie porn through my connection. Guess I got some research on security to do...
