deranger
good article....made me miss the city...made me want to move back after living there for 4 years. what the hell was I thinking when I left in the first place?I think you're conclusion is right: there is no Montreal sound, only journalists looking for a hook to hang a story on. Blane
I'm off to record 5 montreal bands this weekend (a live fundraiser album might even come of it!), 3 of them I've checked out and are REALLY interesting. Torngat (www.torngat.ca) has one of the members of Bell Orchestre in it, and is a bit Tortoise-y sounding with a more eclectic set of sounds.People for Audio (www.peopleforaudio.com) is another montreal collective (band/label/artist group/etc) that combines visuals with music. Amazing stuff. Both are playing at a loft party for halloween here on Saturday. Tonight Shoot the Moon (www.shootthemoon.ca) are playing a benefit show with 3 other bands. THey have a really cool vibe to them. Sort of sexy gypsy lounge or something. Anyhow, all that to see that you should give some of these bands a listen. THe level of talent in town right now is simply astounding, even among the lesser-known bands.ps. Sam Shalabi is way overrated.
