Comprised of about 20 dynamic percussionists, the group plays Afro-Brazilian rhythms in a traditional style inherited from the maracatu nations of Recife Brazil. We are a walking sound system with a heavy emphasis on the bass drums, the alfaias. In command of the drums is the vibrant Aline Morales. We play and entertain in any venue and we hold weekly workshops for beginners and people already familiar with percussion and Brazilian rhythms. In the short time since our inception, Nunca Antes has changed the percussive landscape in Toronto, influencing other bands and introducing a new style to the city. SmoothedShredder
Sounds great... I know Paul Randolph was here with AMP FIDDLER at the Toronto Jazz Festival.. wicked keyboard player/vocalist... I hear the Marvin Gaye comparison, Randolph certainly has some Motown roots, but it's his funky/latin dance rhythms that are going to make this a hot dance party. SmoothedShredder
That's a neat video. The female singer reminded me of Shirley Horn... but I don't think it was her. Will she be there? What's the deal with the Brazillian Drummers?
Jay Funk Dawg
Nunca Antes is a high-energy percussion troupe that brings deep rhythm and raw performance to Toronto 's streets. Comprised of a collective of about 20 dynamic percussionists, the group plays Afro-Brazilian rhythms in a traditional style inherited from the Maracatu Culture of Recife, Brazil . A walking sound system with a heavy emphasis on the bass drums, "the alfaias", Nunca Antes has performed at clubs, festivals and hold weekly workshops on percussion and Brazilian rhythms. Nunca Antes has changed the percussive landscape in Toronto, influencing other bands and introducing a new style to the city, extending the general knowledge of Brazilian music beyond samba and bossanova. Recently Nunca Antes performed downtown in Kensington Market at the Annual Festival of Lights, uniting with another local percussion group The Samba Squad to perform to over 5,000 participants. You've never before seen beats like these! Nunca Antes is a high-energy percussion troupe that brings deep and intense rhythms with them everywhere they go; there are no spectators at this show! p.s. check the write up in this week's NOW Magazine.... Comparisons to SLY STONE... !! Detroit is credited as the birthplace of techno. Over the past several years, though, a peculiar type of new Detroit soul music has been making waves in the DJ scene. Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra mined cosmic jazz and soul to critical acclaim, Jeremy Ellis and John Arnold made broken beat's spastic funk more musical, and Amp Fiddler emerged from the ranks of session players and sidemen to release a confident Sly Stone-influenced album.
