Jay Funk Dawg
www.nufunk.ca presents.... Friday, June 23, 2006 the exchanges www.theexchanges.ca Down with the Butterfly www.downwiththebutterfly.com HotKid www.myspace.com/ilovehotkid The Hooch (upstairs Gypsy Co-op) 815 Queen St W. $10 or $6 Advance Guestlist by emailing: info@nufunk.ca the exchanges (Toronto) www.theexchanges.ca The Exchanges are a three piece rock outfit hailing from Toronto, Canada formed in the spring of 2004. Consisting of Andrew DeVillers (vocals, guitar), Rob Balon (drums), and Jeff Dowdall (bass), the combo have quickly been gaining a reputation for their authentic and gutsy approach. The music of the exchanges brings the spirit of visceral rock like The Clash, Springsteen, and Nirvana into a modern translation. Lyrically, DeVillers draws from a landscape of urban poverty, injustice, hope, doubt, disillusionment, tradition and history. Exploring depths often ignored in current rock music, is the thunderous rhythm section of Dowdall and Balon. Combined, this dynamic makes for an intense pulse plagued with emotion. DOWN WITH THE BUTTERFLY (HALIFAX, NS) www.downwiththebutterfly.com www.myspace.com/downwiththebutterfly If a song was a map, Down With The Butterfly would lay out a route full of twists and turns to end up in a place you have been dying to visit. With their “sum is greater than the parts†approach to songwriting, this Halifax quartet leaves individual egos at the door to produce a powerful progressive pop sound. Their music contains elements of space pop, punk rock, folk rock and jam grooves, but never strays from a pop element. The music challenges your ear, draws you in and gets you moving, while the lyrics are thoughtful, honest and soul searching. The soft, reassuring voice of David Scholten compliments Kris Pope’s sizzling guitar compositions in such songs as ‘Vine’ and ‘Blue and Green’. The longtime friendship of bass player Ian Sherwood and drummer Jason Burns comes through in the tight, driving rhythms of the songs (such as ‘Rise’ and ‘Two Stories’) that typify their live show. Essentially, Down With The Butterfly has an undeniable charm and energy in their live show that warrants them a must-see. Through recent performances, Down With The Butterfly has developed an interest, created a buzz, amassed a fan base and captivated audiences young and old throughout Atlantic Canada. Their first show was in May of 2005 and since then they have shared the stage with acts such as Slowcoaster, Grand Theft Bus, The Machines, Benn Ross, Jenn Grant and the Museum Pieces. DWTB released a demo in May of 2005 and that has since sold over 300 copies. Recently the group was asked to play in CBC’s Galaxy Rising Stars Showcase and was included in Funk in the Trunk- a frosh week CD that was distributed to over 13,000 students in Atlantic Canada. In August, the band self-booked a tour through Atlantic Canada and Southern Ontario rather than staying home during a slow Halifax month. With the help of industry and friends, the band is currently hard at work on their first full-length record set to release in April. HotKid (Cambridge, ON) www.myspace.com/ilovehotkid www.capohedz.com HotKid is a grungy rock duo from Cambridge, Ontario. The band features Shiloh Harrison on guitar and vocals, and Peter McIntosh on drums. This bare bones ensemble balances dirty rock with country twang, and delivers its sound with honesty and heart. Harrison, and former drummer Nicole Girard, formed HotKid in the fall of 2003. In the summer of 2005 they recorded an eight song EP engineered by Will Kidman of the Constantines and Dan Shwang (and Scarlet Leonine). McIntosh, who replaced Girard in October of 2005, has become a new driving force for the group. Harrison and McIntosh recently recorded 10 tracks at Skylight Studios in Toronto. (www.skylightstudio.ca) The tracks are in the process of being mixed and mastered. HotKid is affiliated with CapoHedz Records, an independent artist collective, based out of Cambridge, Ontario.
