can you recommend a great spot to go for a picnic/hike/overnight stay (not camping)? within about 3-4 hrs max from ottawa.

The Laurentians and whatever they're called in Vermont should have some pretty good colour this week, if it wasn't all blown off the trees on the weekend.

The Gatineaus are probably very close to being either at the peak or over...

In summary, I have no idea.

yeah it sure has been windy leaves will be gone soon.

i guess leaves should not be the priority as this trip will be in a few weeks from now, maybe the leaves will be all gone.

The leaves will still be good for another couple of weeks.

I've never strayed far, but...The trail near the Mackenzie King Estate is great. There are spots that overlook the city. Hike up there, grab a picnic, come back down, drive to Wakefield, have a nice dinner, stay at the Inn, and have a massage.

You want me to book all this for you too?

Geez, now I want to get back to Wakefield! Every morning on the drive up to school I see the Gatineaus and the thought flits through my head that I could just skip work for the day and keep on driving....

btw...here's a pic i took in algonquin park 2 weekends ago. the leaves were awesome there!

A guy at my work went to Bromont, Quebec a few weekends ago and loved it. He specifically went to a spa there ( http://www.balnea.ca/ ) but also did some outdoors stuff near the spa. Google Maps says it's about 4 hours from here. The spa web site seems to only be in French, but it does mention that there are trails near it. You could call them and ask about places to stay overnight.

thanks for the suggestions. i ended up deciding to rent a cottage at algonquin inn . the leaves are mostly done apparently, due to the high winds last week, but still can go hiking canoeing and moose-spotting i'll report back if the place is good.
