Oshawa will have a Stephen Colbert Day as Spirit edge Generals in Saginaw

By Roger Lajoie

It looks like March 20 will be Stephen Colbert Day in Oshawa.

Ryan O’Marra scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and added another in the third as the Saginaw Spirit edged the Oshawa Generals 5-4 in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night in Saginaw.

The loss drops Oshawa’s record to 23-18-1-4, but the Generals are still in fourth place in the East Division standings heading into Sunday’s game. The Generals host the Peterborough Petes Sunday at 6:05 p.m. at the General Motors Centre.

One of the sidelights of Friday’s game was a bet between Oshawa Mayor John Gray and Colbert, who host The Colbert Report on The Comedy Network. The bet was if the Generals won, Colbert would wear a Generals jersey on his show, if the Spirit won, March 20 would be declared Stephen Colbert Day in Oshawa.

The TV talk show host wins the bet, as O’Marra’s goals broke a 3-3 tie and helped the Spirit snap a three-game losing streak.

The teams traded goals in the first two periods, with the Spirit three times taking a one-goal lead with the Generals responding, before O’Marra fired the go-ahead goal at 12:47 of the second period.

O’Marra made it 5-3 with his goal at 1:44 of the third period to give the Spirit some insurance, with goalie Marc-Andre Perron making several big saves to keep the Generals from getting back into the game.

John Tavares continued his torrid scoring for the Generals with two goals and an assist, giving him a league leading 52 goals and 98 points. Tavares had seven points in the Generals 9-6 win at Windsor Thursday night.

Brett Parnham and Cal Clutterbuck scored the other goals for the Generals, while Dale Mitchell added a pair of assists. Loic Lacasse was in goal for the Generals.

Ryan Berard, Ryan McDonough and Tomas Zaborsky scored the other goals for the Spirit. Mitch Maunu, Nigel Williams and Tyler Haskins all had two assists for Saginaw.

The Colbert bet attracted a lot of attention to the game, with SUN-TV doing a segment on The Grill Room on the wager at 11 p.m. Friday and fans of the show having some fun with the wager at www.colbertnation.com and at http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_colbert_report/index.jhtml.

This web design guru friend of mine was saying that Colbert has this team of like 'web nazis' (line producers) that scour the net for these sorts of references and spins them out into story ideas. I was wondering how the mayor of Oshawa and he knew one another in the first place and that was his rationale.
