Brain Atkinson, the original bass player and founding member of the world famous Studio One Band, from Jamaica, called "The Soul Vendors".

One of the originators of Jamaican SKA, ROCKSTEADY and REGGAE music, this band was also referred to by other names as: "Sound Dimension" and "Soul Brothers".

Brian Atkinson, (Bassie, as he is affectionately called by Sir Coxsone Dodd, owner of Jamaica Recording Studio, located on Brentford Road in Kingston, Jamaica), along with other band members, Joe Isaacs, Harry Haughton, Jackie Mittoo, Hux Brown, Roland Alphonso, Lynn Taitt, Headly Bennett, Lester Sterling, Lennox Brown, Sam Samuels and Ska Campbell, were responsible for crafting and originating the sound, now referred to worldwide, as "The Studio One" sound.

As the bass player for Soul Vendors, Brian Atkinson played on, and recorded with, various internationally known Jamaican artistes, including Bob Marley and the Wailers, Jackie Mittoo, Alton Ellis, Kingstonians (Winie Winie), Johnny Nash, Vic Franklyn, Hopeton Lewis, the Clarendonians, Delroy Wilson, Dennis Brown and many others...

Brian is a shit-hot bass player - Andru Branch found him in Halifax driving Public Transit... after their chance meeting - Brian felt the ich to get back to the stage and started playing with Andru Branch's Halfway Tree - They have travelled together to all over Atlantic Canada plus to Florida and Jamaica for recordings and concerts. These guys are one of the most authenic Roots Rock Reggae bands in Atlantic Canada - definitley worth checking out.

Brian's biggest claim to fame is that he backed up Bob Marley, Peter Tosh & Bunny Wailer (at that time they were the Wailing Wailers) in a Studio One session in Jamaica and he came up with the bass line for "Stirr it Up" - which was re-recorded by Bob Marley & The Wailers for Island Records release comlete with his signature bass lick.

Nick Fisher, who was the lead saxophonist for High Plains Drifter is now the lead saxophone in Andru's Band - I'm really looking forward to hangin' with these guys!!
