never saw a link come up. Come to think of it, maybe they didn't even play the Pabst last night! Confusing that they'd keep something like that up without dates attached to it.

Nope, they did play there last night:

Recap: Wilco at The Pabst Theater (Night No. 2)

The band triumphantly closes its two-night stand at the downtown venue

by Steven Hyden April 16, 2009

I have a brilliant idea: Let’s make Wilco concerts at The Pabst Theater an annual tradition. The downtown venue should bring the band back for a couple of shows every April—always a magical time in Milwaukee because we have several months of good times and decent weather ahead of us—and we’ll all just sit back and watch the local legend grow.

Because a legend was indeed born last night; people who either weren’t lucky or quick enough to get tickets will soon grow tired of hearing about how great these shows were from their over-excited friends. And they’re only going to get more annoyed—Wilco’s two-night stand at the Pabst is going to be talked about for a long time.

As good as Wilco was on Tuesday night—its first (and admittedly under-rehearsed) show of 2009—the band was even better on Wednesday, somehow sounding tighter and seeming looser at the same time. The traces of rust (and maybe a few jittery nerves) from the previous night were fully shaken off, and the band resumed peak tour form and proceeded to have a blast onstage. Broad smiles could be seen on the band members’ faces throughout the show; there was even an inspired impromptu comedy bit involving Nels Cline’s bright red pants. (Yell “Nels’ pants are the shit!†at your next Wilco show and you’ll see what I mean.)

Like Tuesday night, Wilco drew the most from A Ghost Is Born—more than a quarter of the 25-song set was taken from the 2004 album. (The only Ghost songs Wilco didn’t play during the two nights were “Spiders (Kidsmoke),†“Wishful Thinking,†and “Less Than You Think.â€) But the band also dug a little deeper into its back catalog this time around, reviving treasured deep cuts like “Forget The Flowers†(from Being There) and “Shouldn’t Be Ashamed†(from A.M.).

Some fans might have been disappointed that Wilco didn’t play more from its upcoming, still untitled album due in June. Tuesday’s show included the goofy “Wilco The Song,†which premièred last year on The Colbert Report; and the jaunty “Conscript,†a ’60s folk rocker that hearkens back to the band’s Mermaid Avenue period. But Wednesday’s show didn’t include any new songs, perhaps because Wilco was doing a live webcast on its website and didn’t want to give a leg up to bootleggers.

So, instead of previewing the new record, Wilco stuck to the tried and true, especially in the second encore, which brought things home with the band’s most fist-pumping material. A night filled with so much pure enjoyment could only end with “I Got You,†“Casino Queen,†and “I’m A Wheel,†even as the audience wished that the show would never end. But why does it have to end? Let’s do this again next year.
