Position: Project Officer, Climate Change and Energy

(Term--August 15, 2009 to March 31, 2010)

The International Institute for Sustainable Development

(IISD) has a growing portfolio of work in the field of

climate mitigation, emissions trading and climate policy.

IISD wishes to engage a Project Officer to support the

Institute's on-going work in this area. The Project Officer

will support implementation of a diversity of initiatives of

IISD as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Project Officer shall participate in research, management

and communications associated with projects undertaken within

the Climate Change and Energy program of IISD. Under the

direction of the Director, Climate Change and Energy, or his

delegate, the Project Officer will:

* Carry out substantive research and project support related

to the following issues as required:

- development of policies within Canada, North America

and globally for promoting clean energy development, such as

through emissions trading (both project- and allowance-based

mechanisms);

- design and modalities of the international climate

change regime; and

- facilitation of the development, deployment and

diffusion of technologies that support climate change

mitigation and adaptation.

* Conduct research and write on climate change mitigation,

energy and other issues as required.

* Follow on-going provincial, national and international

climate change and energy processes.

* Organize meetings, work with partner organizations, and

write project documents according to the needs of

initiatives within the Climate Change and Energy program.

* Manage activities in cooperation with other IISD

personnel, including but not limited to implementing

specific projects, controlling budgets, maintaining

relationships with funders, and supervising IISD or external

consultants associated with these projects.

* Support the Climate Change and Energy team's public

engagement and outreach activities, such as the development

of communication materials and Web site content.

* Assist with the maintenance of IISD's institutional

presence in Ottawa, including the maintenance of

relationships within the government, non-governmental and

private sectors.

* Maintain contacts with domestic and international project

partners.

* Identify and initiate new projects through IISD's project

planning and review mechanism; develop proposals and raise

funds for new project initiatives.

* Represent IISD at national and international fora.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Project Officer should possess the following qualifications:

* Masters Degree in the social sciences (e.g., political science,

public administration, economics) or an interdisciplinary

program (e.g., natural resources management, environmental studies).

* Minimum two years of relevant work experience preferred.

* Substantive knowledge related to climate change and energy

policy, with an emphasis on issues of concern to Canada and

in North America.

* Familiarity with sustainable development theory and policy

issues.

* Very strong writing, communication and networking skills.

* Very strong organizational skills.

* Systems thinking, creativity and drive balanced with

considered judgment.

* Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member

of a team.

* Availability to travel within Canada and internationally.

* Fluency in a language other than English, particularly in

French or Spanish, is considered an asset.

LOCATION:

This full-time contract position will be based at IISD's

office in Ottawa, Canada.
