The Project Officerwill support implementation of a diversity of initiatives ofIISD as assigned.RESPONSIBILITIES:The Project Officer shall participate in research, managementand communications associated with projects undertaken withinthe Climate Change and Energy program of IISD. Under thedirection of the Director, Climate Change and Energy, or hisdelegate, the Project Officer will:* Carry out substantive research and project support relatedto the following issues as required:- development of policies within Canada, North Americaand globally for promoting clean energy development, such asthrough emissions trading (both project- and allowance-basedmechanisms);- design and modalities of the international climatechange regime; and- facilitation of the development, deployment anddiffusion of technologies that support climate changemitigation and adaptation.* Conduct research and write on climate change mitigation,energy and other issues as required.* Follow on-going provincial, national and internationalclimate change and energy processes.* Organize meetings, work with partner organizations, andwrite project documents according to the needs ofinitiatives within the Climate Change and Energy program.* Manage activities in cooperation with other IISDpersonnel, including but not limited to implementingspecific projects, controlling budgets, maintainingrelationships with funders, and supervising IISD or externalconsultants associated with these projects.* Support the Climate Change and Energy team's publicengagement and outreach activities, such as the developmentof communication materials and Web site content.* Assist with the maintenance of IISD's institutionalpresence in Ottawa, including the maintenance ofrelationships within the government, non-governmental andprivate sectors.* Maintain contacts with domestic and international projectpartners.* Identify and initiate new projects through IISD's projectplanning and review mechanism; develop proposals and raisefunds for new project initiatives.* Represent IISD at national and international fora.* Perform other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS:The Project Officer should possess the following qualifications:* Masters Degree in the social sciences (e.g., political science,public administration, economics) or an interdisciplinaryprogram (e.g., natural resources management, environmental studies).* Minimum two years of relevant work experience preferred.* Substantive knowledge related to climate change and energypolicy, with an emphasis on issues of concern to Canada andin North America.* Familiarity with sustainable development theory and policyissues.* Very strong writing, communication and networking skills.* Very strong organizational skills.* Systems thinking, creativity and drive balanced withconsidered judgment.* Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a memberof a team.* Availability to travel within Canada and internationally.* Fluency in a language other than English, particularly inFrench or Spanish, is considered an asset.LOCATION:This full-time contract position will be based at IISD'soffice in Ottawa, Canada.APPLICATIONS:Please send a CV (no longer then 2 pages including thenames, phone numbers and email addresses of 2 references)as well as a covering letetter (1 page).IISD is committed to equal opportunity.
