Suggestions for Jobs in Toronto?

My brother, who has been in Japan teaching English for the last 15 years, has moved back to Toronto (permanently) and will thus need employment in a right-freakin'-now kind of way.

He's got an (Honours) B.A. in (IIRC) economics & political science from UofT, speaks (some) Japanese, is well-read, articulate (both spoken and in writing), and is familiar with Japanese culture. His duties while in Japan included both teaching, and coordination/(semi-)management of teachers and resources.

He wants a job in Toronto, but not necessarily something to do with or which takes advantage of his Japanes experience(s).

If anybody has any tips, suggestions, ideas, etc., I'd really appreciate them. I'm probably going to be getting him some job-hunting resources (e.g., books, or a resume' creation package) for Christmas, so suggestions in this area would also be welcome.

Thanks,

Brad

Hey Brad!

Here are a few links that may be of help...

A really comprehensive job-seekers guide:

Non-profit sector, professional jobs:

Some amazing international development opportunities:

Some other international teaching ops (if he's not too homesick already):

From your brief description, it sounds as though your Bro would be perfect for a government position or something administrative in one of the many ESL schools around town. Here's the URL for the local Japanese consulate:

http://www.toronto.ca.emb-japan.go.jp/jobs/jobs.html

And finally, I would suggest that he use an executive placement agency or even a temp service if he wants to get in to an office environment at all - it seems like everyone uses them to fill their HR needs now. Bryan, Jason and Associates were the one’s I used. Anyway, that's it for now. The St. Stephen's employment centre at St. Clair & Bathurst is fantastic for local contacts and resources as well... wish him luck! (There's always unqualified supply teaching which pays about $120/day, I think).

PEACE!

You caught me on a good day Brad. If he is going to be based in T-Dot I think something related to New Canadians might be a good idea. There are a number of Immigrant services groups and acculturation centres based in toronto since it's usually a starting point for many people new to canada.
