  1. I'm writing a story on them right now and they have a really deep underground history in indie rock Canada... They've returned after a 5-7 year hiatus with a brand new album.

If anyone has any memories of seeing them or remembers the buzz around them I'd like to hear about it...

Are you doing the Ottawa Xpress article?

I could give you more info than you could ever need, but it might be a conflict of interest (I work with them, their new album is on Sonic Unyon, where I work).

The Rheostatics loved them, and had them open up a whole week of shows for them at the Ultrasound Show Bar in Toronto back in like 1994, before their first album was out. Dave Bidini claims that the Rolling Stones came to one of the shows they played together there (at a different time) but when Bidini outed Jagger for being there, the band got up and left.

The Wooden Stars' Josh Latour accepted their 2000 Juno Award. Since he was the only band member living in Toronto he went and accepted it - and was shocked to accept it. The favourites to win that year were Thrush Hermit and Danko Jones, so when Julie and the W Stars won it was a big surprise. I was there, since we had 3 bands nominated for that award (Julie/Wooden Stars, Thrush Hermit and Tricky Woo) but I don't remember Josh telling a joke and neither does my wife.

Their drummer, Andrew McCormack, also drums in Howe Gelb's band. He replaced Jeremy Gara when he got too busy with the Arcade Fire.

  2. In regards to the Good Brothers and the Dead, the Dead bankrolled the band for their first album, James and the Good Brothers, and then sold it to Columbia (I believe). Billy K plays on the album.

Supposedly, the Good Brothers also taught Bob Weird many of his country songs along the Festival express too.

  3. The Unintended is a band seriously not to be missed. Like the Sadies transforming Elevaotr into a psychedelic country band. Sometimes remind me of 70s Dead, especially when G. Keelor sits in as a second drummer instead of a third guitarist.

They have a great new VINYL only release with the Constantines - Unintended cover G. Lightfoot songs on their half and Cons cover Neil Young on their side. It rules and they should be selling copies (unless it's sold out by then)...

  4. This is looking like a great weekend for music! There are great shows happening in Hamilton tonight and on Friday that I haven't seen mentioned on here yet, but feel the need to

Tonight: Great Lake Swimmers, Alive & Living and Picastro at Pepper Jack Cafe

    http://www.pepperjackcafe.com/live.htm#gls - info on GLS

http://www.viewmag.com/viewstory.php?storyid=3669 - Picastro story from VIEW

http://www.aliveandliving.net - in case you haven't yet heard one of Hamilton's best new bands Alive & Living

Tomorrow: apart from the mighty Diesel Dog at PJC, there is also this great 11 band show at the Casbah. It's sorta self-promo of me to list it here, since I work at SU, but check it out:

If you can make it out, great bands, cheap price ($6 at the door with a toy for charity) and tons of cool gift packages of great CDs and DVDs being given away as door prizes too. It starts at 7:30, so you could even go and see 5 bands and still make it to PJC for 11 PM!

  7. Exclaim! is pretty jam friendly, truth be told. There have always been a few people writing about stuff on there, but there's not really fans in the editorial department. Actually, one editor is really into it, but most aren't.

The thing you have to remember about the magazine is, they don't assign articles for the most part. Their contributors pitch stuff and then the editorial dept decides what to actually say yes and no to. I have had loads of jam related stuff turned down over the past 10 years...

  8. what would "post-metal" sound like? hmmmm maybe I could corner the market on that one....

Usually refers to more avantgarde metal acts such as Ulver and In The Woods... but also is used to describe more esoteric stuff from the 90s like disEMBOWELMENT, who has a new 2 CD reissue on Relapse that came out this summer that is quite amazing and very ahead of its time.

SUNN(0))) is also known as post-metal, as is Isis and some (later) Neurosis.

I don't figure too many people on here have any idea about the modern metal scene though.
