  3. I wrote the review, that's me, and I actually did say the Sugaree was the highlight of the night but it must have been edited out. Here was what that section originally said

"Warren Haynes’ explosive soloing during ‘All Along The Watchtower’ left the song closer in spirit to Jimi Hendrix’s version than the Dylan original. After a very entertaining drum break, the band’s run through ‘Sugaree’ proved to be the highlight of the second set. A swift transistion back into the instrumental ‘Slipknot!’ before ending the set on a high with a euphoric version of ‘Franklin’s Tower’ made the post-drums portion of the show the most cohesive part of the night.

Surprisingly, that was the end of the set. It felt a few songs short, but the band quickly exited the stage before returning for a bitterweet goodbye encore. A nearly acoustic version of the American Beauty track ‘Ripple’ saw Phil Lesh sing without his bass strapped on his back, a true rarity.

It was an up and down show that had definite highlights, but the low moments were also far too visible and left many fans walking away scratching their heads. Like they’ve always said, there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert. "

Does that make more sense to y'all now?

  4. I just got today's mail and with it a copy of the Crosby/Nash double album that came out yesterday. While I'm not all that excited by it yet, I love the Crosby/Nash for president 2004 bumper sticker and buttons that accompanied the CD! I think I might have to use them.

  5. Comets On Fire - Blue Cathedral. This album is like rolling Blue Cheer, Mudhoney, Anthem-era Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service into one. The heavy stoner-psych album of the summer.

GD - Dicks picks 32. Just picked this up at Darien and it is a fun early 80s show. Another great Alpine Valley China>Rider, plus a 2-part Playing, a Morning Dew and a cool Music Never Stopped>Sugaree>Music Never Stopped to open the show. Wow!

Meshuggah - 1. This is one single twenty minute track of totally intricate death metal. You either love or hate this stuff. I love it when it is done well.

The Fall - 50,000 Fall Fans Can't be Wrong. New 39 track 2 CD compilation of highlights from one of the most important UK post punk bands ever. They may have never become a huge band, but almost everything Mark E Smith and co. have touched has at least been interesting.

v/a - Dylan Country. Great compilation of country artists covering Dylan. Includes Johnny Cash, Buck Owens and many many more. It works because the tracks weren't recorded just for this collection, they come from the past 30 years.

  6. Ryerse is spelled right. That is a great place to hide out. Living there a long time ago was a blast.

Since they're expecting upwards of 50,000 in Dover this Friday, I'll be staying in Hamilton for the Ti-Cats game. It's too crazy for our little boy right now. Maybe next summer we'll take him.

Good luck to my pals in DD - have a good show.

  7. Father and Uncle of the Goods in the Sadies. They apparently taught The Dead some of the country songs Bobby sings (Big River, etc) on the Festival Express tour. Bruce Good and family lived on Bobby's ranch in California during the 70s for some time, they recorded some albums while living out there.

  8. I am glad that so many people had a great time. I thought the show was pretty up and down myself, but I definitely enjoyed it nonetheless.

I was a little bummed at the Set 1 Dark Star and how it seemed to not go anywhere and thought that the Phil ballad he sung was crap. The Help>Slip>Pocky was cool, even though I am sick to death of seeing them play H>S>Franklins (almost everytime I see a Dead related band they do it!).

The three song portion out of space in Set 2 was a song too short for my liking, but like I said I did like a lot of it.

  9. Hopefully they'll be back in the fall at a larger venue. I think they booked in such a small place just to come to Toronto at around the same time as when the Lollapalooza gig was scheduled to be.

1st or 2nd week of October at Massey Hall.

this show was almost sold out before tickets went on sale. Their label purchased 300 tickets and gave them away to media, to get the band up here to do press. The band didn't want to do it at first.
