  1. From www.billboard.com

Asked if Bonnaroo is running the risk of alienating the core jam band fans that put the festival on the map, Mayers responds, "We don't want to dismiss our core in any way, but we also think it's great to bring all these different types of music together. As great as Widespread Panic has been to us and has been a really big part of what we've done, we can't have Widespread Panic every single year."

    Whole article:

    http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001921757

I guess that means that there will be on Widespread Panic this year.

I enjoy Widespread Panic, but I am happy that they will not be performing two headlining sets at bonnaroo this year.

As those who have attended bonnaroo know, that the headliner on the What Stage is the only time of the day that there are no other acts performing.

So even if you had your fill of Widespread Panic after the first night they performed there is nothing else to see so you end up being forced to see them twice, if you want to watch music as much as humanly possible. If other acts were on at that time it would be much better as then you would still have a choice.

    * Who I hope to see for the first time at bonnaro 2006

Seeing twenty-seven of the initial sixty plus acts before, with many of them being repeats, I'll be more than happy to go down and see my fifth bonnaroo music festival.

This years initial lineup once again proves to me personally that for the bang for your buck you can not beat bonnaroo.

  3. Radiohead..... what an incredible addition.

Almost makes MarcO want to head South with TimmyB this year...... almost but not quite.

What if Ryan Adams if the vocalist/guitarist in the version of Phil Lesh & Friends that is performing?

Come on you know you'll want to go then.

    Tim

    * First time seeing live ever.

So I've seen nearly eighty acts (77) in the first four bonnaroos, a little over sixty (63) of them have not been repeats over the years.

And I've seen twenty-nine acts for the first time ever at bonnaroo.

Bring on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Beck and especially Radiohead tomorrow. I don't know what my summer would be like anymore without bonnaroo in June?

  5. Happy 62nd Birthday Nick,

May you have many, many more in health and happiness.

    Tim

PS I wonder if Nick was disappointed that instead of a Pink Floyd tour in 2006 David Gilmour is touring as a solo artist?

Let alone the fact that Gilmour announces his touring band on Mason's birthday with Rick Wright in the band.

  6. Neil Young is on the cover of the new Rolling Stone (Issue 992 January 26, 2006).

It has been a while since Mister Young graced the cover and I picked it up late last night and immediately came home to listen to the classic track "Crime in the City (Sixty to Zero Part 1)" off of 'Freedom.'

The Neil article is by Alec Wilkinson and photographed by Platon.

    And a new Rolling Stone.

    Yeah.

You know you can go to both shows, right? :)

Nice to hear about the possibility of some Steely Dan shows too!!

I can't go to both shows this year. With the amount I'm going to be laid off from the Oakville Ford Plant I'm seriously going to have to cut back on 60 plus concert a year average I have been on the past 8 years.

I'm going to stay firm and hold out hope for Steely Dan by late summer.

    Steely Dan Mulling Summer Shows

    January 24, 2006, 4:30 PM ET

    Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Steely Dan is mulling a series of performances near the end of the summer, which would be the band's first since the fall of 2003. At present, it's unclear how many dates may be in the offing. First up, group member Donald Fagen will embark on his maiden solo tour in March and may extend that trek into the summer.

"It depends on how my shows go and if there's a demand for it," Fagen told Billboard.com when asked if Steely Dan would mount a full tour or just play select shows.

It's also too early to predict when the veteran jazz/rock act will begin work on a new album, which will be the follow-up to 2003's "Everything Must Go." Says Fagen, "Not until after the summer, that's for sure. [Guitarist] Walter [becker] is also working on his own solo album right now. He went into the studio a month or two ago, but I haven't heard any of it yet."

Fagen's tour comes in support of the album "Morph the Cat," due March 7 via Reprise. He will be backed on the road by a number of the musicians that play on the disc, including guitarists Jon Herrington and Wayne Krantz, drummer Keith Carlock and bassist Freddie Washington.

"I will probably do a lot of the new album and then some stuff from my previous solo albums," Fagen speculates about the tour set list. "Then, a couple of Steely Dan tunes and maybe some surprise tunes or covers I've been thinking about."

  9. I don't know if I'm up for going to see the Derek Trucks Band at the University of Buffalo tonight(Wed 1/25/2006), as I'm a little too tired from the last days of campaigning in Hamilton Centre for David Christopherson and the NDP, but I would be interested to know who's going to the gig and to get their thoughts after?

    Tim

  10. I saw Howie Gelb at the same venue at around the same time last year.

I love Howie Gelb and his now in all likelihood defunct band Giant Sand, he is so passionate on stage and so genuine.

He'll go from one song to the next seamlessly and at the same time play guitar to keyboards nearly as seamlessly, sometimes within the same song.

Howie will also take requests at the drop of a dime, so any of those who want to see an underrated musical mastermind go to this gig at the Horseshoe.

  11. Happy 59th Birthday David,

May you have many, many more in health and happiness.

    Tim

    From www.billboard.com

1947 - David Bowie (David Robert Jones) is born in London. He first records with the King Bees, Lower Third and the Mannish Boys in 1963 before going solo. His two No. 1 songs are "Fame" and "Let's Dance."

  12. I wish the King lived longer than he did, even if I was to see him in Las Vegas that would have been good enough for me.

    Tim

    From www.billboard.com

1935 - Elvis Presley is born in Tupelo, Miss., one of a pair of twins. His brother Jessie is stillborn. Billboard ranks him as the top pop recording artist of all time with 17 No. 1 songs. The 1956 two-sided hit "Don't Be Cruel/Hound Dog" stays at No. 1 for 11 weeks, a record for the rock era that stands until 1992.

  13. Happy 60th Birthday Syd,

May you have many, many more in health (physical at least) and happiness.

    Happy 60th Birthday, Syd

The fallen genius who turned Pink Floyd into the leading psychedelic band of the day, and amazed everyone (even The Beatles!) with ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn‘, is 60 today.

David would like to take this opportunity to send his warmest wishes to his friend, Roger Keith Barrett, who will always be affectionately known to those who knew and loved him - not to mention the many who have been touched and inspired by his music - simply as 'Syd'.

As well as his vital contribution to Pink Floyd’s second album ’A Saucerful of Secrets’, Syd has made two solo albums, 'The Madcap Laughs' and 'Barrett'. There is also the 'Opel' compilation of studio outtakes. If you haven’t heard them, then do give them a try.

David has always championed Syd’s music and produced almost all of Syd's studio sessions from July 1969. He fought to include as many of Syd’s songs on Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’ compilation, as well as performing several of Syd’s songs live - most notably 'Terrapin' and 'Dominoes' in 2001 and 2002.

We hope you can find time today to play some of Syd’s songs and to remember him as the creative genius who wrote such enchanting and thought-provoking lyrics, dared to be different and inspired myriad artists to follow him into the music business.

Feel free to let us know what Syd's music means to you and, of course, to send him your birthday greetings. Even though it's now been some 35 years since Syd retired from public life, his music will always live on and continue to move people. Let it move you today.

We leave you with a recent excerpt from Guitar & Bass magazine, which pertains to Syd's legacy in Pink Floyd:

He recognised Syd Barrett as a genius, even though he had to watch his friend’s stability crumble. Gilmour was invited to the recording session for the band’s second single ‘See Emily Play', and recalls even then that Syd didn’t recognise him. ‘He looked through you. He wasn’t quite there.’ Since then, he has ensured Syd has benefited from royalties generated by five songs included on the ‘Echoes’ compilation and ‘Astronomy Domine’, performed on the 1994 tour and later released as part of the album ‘Pulse’. Phish Inaugurates Live Video Downloads

    January 05, 2006, 3:15 PM ET

    Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Phish has launched what it describes as the "first-of-its-kind" service for individual live video downloads via its LivePhish.com repository. Through Jan. 15, the service is offering a free download of the New Year's Eve countdown/"Weekapaug Groove" from its 1995 concert at New York Madison Square Garden, which was recently issued as a three-CD audio set via Rhino.

Although the New Year's clip originates from a single camera positioned at the soundboard, future offerings will include "a wide variety of video from myriad sources and eras."

Songs will be sold for $1.99 and will be encoded as MPEG-4 files without digital rights restrictions. They will be playable on such popular devices as Apple's iPod Video and the Creative Zen Vision.

"This is a chance to share incredible material directly with fans that might otherwise never see the light of day in a more traditional distribution scheme," Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro says.

"Live at Madison Square Garden New Year's Eve 1995 " debuted last month at No. 15 on Billboard's Top Internet Albums chart. As previously reported, the Phish archives are expected to bring forth a DVD this year of the band's June 2004 stand at KeySpan Park in Coney Island, N.Y.

  15. I read further reviews on the BLACK CROWES NYE MSG gig only to find out that JIMMY PAGE did not perform with the Crowes.

I initially read the Page did play with the Crowes on New Years Eve from a thread from the official Black Crowes website about the setlist being updated from people in attendance at the Gardens.

Unfortunately those people were either too far awa and blind or just not too bright as Page was not there on stage when the Crowes performed two Led Zeppelin songs in the second set.

I'm feeling a lot better now that I missed the gig.

    Tim
