  1. DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!!!!

I knew I should have scrimped and saved to go to Madison Square Gardens again for New Years Eve this year, but I didn't.

And then JIMMY PAGE plays with the BLACK CROWES! It's going to take me a while before I forgive myself for this one.

Here was the set for the BLACK CROWES:

    1. No speak

    2. Lickin'

    3. Thick N Thin

    4. Jealous Again

    5. Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye

    6. Soul Singin'

    7. Space Captain

    8. Happy

    HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!

    9. Auld Lang Syne

    10. Will The Circle Be Unbroken

    11. Thorn Jam > Thorn

    END OF SET 1

    SET 2

    1. Wiser Time

    2. My Morning Song

    3. TEN YEARS GONE (no confirm that Jimmy is playing....yet)

    4. WANTON SONG (Yes, it's Jimmy)

    5. Seeing Thing (with horns)

    6. Hard To Handle (with horns & Trey)

    7. Twice As Hard

    8. Remedy

    ENCORE

    9. STREET FIGHTING MAN (no guests)

And also here was the TREY ANASTASIO set:

Auld Lag Syne at midnight w/ Black Crowes and Treys's and Chris Robinson's family and children. Trey sang a verse of some country hymn.

I can stress enough how pissed off at myself I am.

    Happy New Year,

    Tim

  2. Interesting very interesting.

It's not my job to persuade you to go to any concert, so I won't put too much effort forth on that particular subject.

Though I will say this. If you love Pete Townshend as much as I know you do, wouldn't you want to see him when an opportunity becomes available?

I hope you do go to the Who if they come to Toronto and then we can reminisce about the gig after it is over.

    Happy New Year,

    Tim

  3. Pete and Roger delayed the tour because of the prior commitments of Zak Starkey with Oasis and Paulo Palladino being a member of the new John Mayer Trio ( whom are suprisingly good ).

Regardless, this ain't no real Who, but if you love Townshend's guitar, then seeing them live will be worth it, especially if you have yet to witness Pete's power firsthand.

So Jaimoe, does that mean you won't be going to the Who (or whatever you want to call them) in 2006 if they come to Toronto?

I've seen Roger and Pete four times with the late great John Entwistle and once with Pino Palladino (who's Paulo?). Though I missed John at the last Who concert, it was still a fantastic show.

If the Who come around to close another North American Tour in Toronto I'll likely be in attendance.

    Ben Harper Sees Both Sides

Singer-songwriter polishes off a disc of funk and a disc of ballads

Ben Harper will release a two-CD set, Both Sides of the Gun, on March 21st. While Harper released a collaboration with the Blind Boys of Alabama in 2004, this eighteen-track collection, divided into nine songs per disc, is the follow-up to his last solo effort, 2003's world music-inspired Diamonds on the Inside.

At an hour long, the new material would easily fit on one CD. But Harper wanted to give each disc a distinct sound, one harder and one softer, as he just "wasn't able to find that magic balance."

Among the tracks on Both Sides' harder-edged half is the title track, which melds funk with a Seventies soul vibe, and the blues and funk-driven "Black Rain," a song in response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. In contrast, Both Sides' second half features the power ballad "Picture in a Frame," and the romantic closer "Happily Ever After in Your Eyes," a track Harper hopes will become "the ultimate wedding song." (Harper and longtime girlfriend actress Laura Dern actually chose holiday tracks for their recent wedding ceremony this December 23rd in Los Angeles.)

While the California singer-songwriter turned to his usual backing band and a number of L.A. "jazz-heads" for recording, he self-produced the album and, on several tracks, played all the instruments. Harper says of his very hands-on effort, "I feel confident there's not an ounce of filler."

With tour plans in support of Both Sides in the works for either February or March -- and a co-headlining slot for the Langerado Music Festival in Sunrise, Florida, on March 11th -- Harper finds himself itching to get out on the road. "I'm jumping out of my skin. I can hardly sit still. I just can't wait to get it out and play it."

  5. Dennis Wilson was, IMHO, a fine songwriter who wrote many wonderful songs that were the equal of his more famous brother Brian's, such as "Forever", "4th Of July", "River Song", and "Carry Me Home" ... it's a shame that his one solo album, Pacific Ocean Blue, is not available on CD.

I completely agree about how it's a shame that Denis Wilson's only solo album is not available on CD. I hope that if/and when it is released on Compact Disc it has the same fold open sleeve.

  6. Happy 55th Birthday Alex,

May you have many, many more in health and happiness.

    Tim

I tried to see Alex with the Box Tops at the Hershey Centre this year, but he was unable to get across the border into Canada for whatever reason. I hope to one day see Alex in the Box Tops or even more so in Big Star.

  7. I wish I had the opportunity to see all the Wilson brothers on stage together, sadly that was never to happen after Dennis Wilson (the only Beach Boy who was a a surfer) died swimming.

I hope Dennis is resting in peace.

  8. did the cpac camera crew tell you to be in the camera view and for you to act natuarlly or did it just work out that way because you were acting naturally?

I actually just naturally started acting naturally.

Nicely done, you looked like you were naturally acting naturally on the program.

  9. oh, and this is how TimmyB met Hux.

    Me: Hey Tim, there's Hux.

Me: Hey Hux, this is TimmyB. He's seen lots of shows.

Hux: Hey Tim, what shows have you seen?

    TimmyB: What Year?

Me: Oh damn, this is going to take a while. (gets up and leaves Hux and B alone)

Either I'm getting old or I've been to too many shows. I'm now having a hard time remembering many of the gigs that I have seen at the end of any given year now, without referring to my concert tickets and note pads of gigs that I have attended.

    Tim

  10. As I said Hux, I took no offense. I rather enjoyed finally meeting you and SugarMegs on Friday.

Especially when you were pointing at my Paul McCartney US TOUR shirt and said "I have one of those Hofner Bases" and then you went into the story of how your mother got it for you.

Here's a question for you Hux, did the cpac camera crew tell you to be in the camera view and for you to act natuarlly or did it just work out that way because you were acting naturally?

    Tim

  11. Hux looked in a lot better shape there than he did on Friday night at Pepper Jacks Cafe.

    Tim

Hux almost ALWAYS looks better than he did the other night at Pepper Jacks ;)

Well SugarMegs, since that was the first time I met you and Hux, I couldn't really say. But I'll take your word for it.

I still find it funny that Hux thought I was Iranian. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Though since Hux stated "Don't take any offense to this, but you look Iranian," I had a hard time not taking offense.

I'm just kidding, I really didn't take offense to Hux saying that I looked Iranian, it was just another reminder that I need to take down my freak flag and cut my hair and shave my beard.

  12. I was awakened by my brothers cats today a little after seven, as I'm cat sitting for my brother and sister-in-law as they are away visiting my sister-in-laws family in British Columbia over the holidays.

I turned it to CPAC to watch 'Canadian Politic' which was showing the riding of Vancouver North and at the end of the program while the Liberal incumbent Don Bell was being interviewed I could see Hux in the background talking to some elderly ladies and pointing at signs and such.

Hux looked in a lot better shape there than he did on Friday night at Pepper Jacks Cafe.

  15. 1. Cream @ Madison Square Gardens Monday October 24, 2005.

I dreamt that I would one day see Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton live on stage as Cream ever since I began to love music so long ago. After this definitive supergroup and power trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 1993 I thought my dreams could become a reality. But as the months after their induction became years with no tour my dream faded.

Until when this past year Clapton convinced Baker to come out of retirement and play with Clapton and Bruce for a few more shows.

That I was able to be in attendance at the first full Cream show in North America since November 26, 1968 might one day go down as the most special and unique concert that I will ever attend.

Let alone that the three men now all in their sixties performed, as well if not better than nearly all the musicians I witness on a week to week basis that are a third of their age is a testament to to the greatness of those three artists as individuals and as a collective group.

    2. U2 @ Air Canada Centre Monday September 12, 2005.

Often just because something is the biggest doesn't necessarily means it is the best. I believe in the case of U2, more specifically the 'Vertigo Tour' the biggest is the best (Since their 'Vertigo Tour' was the highest grossing concert for 2005 at $260 million. This tour was obviously the biggest).

It is not often that I see the crowd sing word for word ever song old and new of a band, U2 was and still is that band.

I have never seen a band twenty-five years in that are as significant as U2 and doubt I ever will.

Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. inspire like few others before them both with their music, but also their significant lyrical content as well. Only the Beatles that have touched the world with both their music and lyrics more than U2. That says something.

    3. The Rolling Stones @ The Phoenix Wednesday August 10, 2005.

I don't know if I will ever pay $100 plus to see the Rolling Stones in an arena or stadium again after this tour (There are many variables that will come into play, including if the Stones ever start changing their setlists again as they did during the 'Licks Tour?' and who will be opening for them). That being said I will gladly wait in line again eighteen hours and pay only $10 to see what many describe as 'the worlds greatest rock and roll band' in a small club.

That night specifically with Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards having nowhere to run on the small stage of the Phoenix (Mick Jagger can run all he likes for all I care), those two great guitarists stood shoulder to shoulder playing off one another for the entire set. It was beautiful to see and hear.

Later this year at the other two Rolling Stones gigs that I attended at Lansdowne Park and Rogers Centre Keith and Ronnie were often as far apart on that huge stage it sometimes feel like they weren't even on the same stage.

  16. I wish I was going to this just for the Black Crowes, now even though Trey Anastasio hasn't impressed me too much lately, to see Trey at Madison Square Gardens for New Years Eve is a great addition to the bill to replace My Morning Jacket.

    Tim

    From www.billboard.com

    Billboard Bits: Anastasio

    December 15, 2005, 3:40 PM ET

Trey Anastasio has joined the bill for the Black Crowes' New Year's Eve show at New York's Madison Square Garden, replacing My Morning Jacket, which has been forced to back out while frontman Jim James recovers from health complications related to pneumonia. MMJ has also postponed a European tour that was to begin Jan. 18 in Birmingham, England.

As previously reported, North Mississippi Allstars will open the show, and will be followed by a 90-minute set from Anastasio and his band. The Crowes will play last.
