Amex Presale service charges are more than the normal service charges for the general onsale. I guess membership has its privileges?

  2. Good show Cully,

Well I can speak for Calexico as I have been listening to them since 1998 and seeing them live since 1999.

Calexico is a two man band fronted by guitarist/bassist/keyboardist/vocalist Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino. The two started as the rhythm section for Howie Gelb in his band Giant Sand that was formed in Tucson, Arizona in 1990.

Joey and John started Calexico in 1997 recording most of their debut album 'Spoke' as a duo. Their sound is that of a combination of alt. country rock, surf, mexicali music.

They have had the same touring band for years now with two Germans Martin Wenk (trumpet, vibes, acoustic guitar) and Volker Zander (upright bass) as well as Americans Paul Nielhaus (pedal steel, acoustic guitar) and Jacob Valenzuela (trumpet, vibes).

Joey Burns has become a very good front man, their music that initially started out with half their material being instrumentals, but now nearly all the songs have his provocative and storytelling lyrics in them.

  3. Happy Birthday to Richard, J.J. and Jim,

May they all have many, many more in health and happiness.

I've seen Little Richard and J.J. Cale and one day I hope to see the former Buffalo Springfield and Poco member Jim Messina.

1938 - Guitarist J.J. Cale is born in Oklahoma City. Eric Clapton made hits out of two of Cale's songs - "After Midnight" and "Cocaine."

1935 - Little Richard (Richard Wayne Penniman) is born in Macon, Ga., the son of a minister. He has 14 top 10 hits on Billboard's R&B singles chart. His biggest pop hit is "Long Tall Sally," a No. 6 song in 1956.

    I'll be there.

  5. Damn, I was hoping for "Hurricane" tonight at the Phil Lesh & Friends show.

Though I figured it might have been played because Larry Campbell had joined the band, even if he had never played the Bob Dylan classic with Dylan during his eight years as member of Dylan's band.

At very least I was hoping it still wasn't played the night before, so I could have hope for tonight.

Oh well, I should stop complaining, it should still be a great show.

  6. It was my second, my first was the Maple Leaf Gardens show the year before on the Amorica tour. That show was fucking incredible with Ford and Robinson ripping it up. Dual slide solo for 30 minutes blew my freaking mind. And then, some 10 years later, I'm treated to another, shorter, dual slide solo between Ford and Robinson at their most recent Kool Haus gig. I love how history can come full circle like that. The Massey Hall really did kick ass didn't it? My girlfriend and I danced like maniacs in the eisle to the annoyance of the ushers.

Yes that was a pretty crazy crowd for the Crowes at Massey for Toronto, especially at a "formal venue."

Sadly I missed the Crowes gig at MLG back in 1995 as I was up in Ottawa at the time and I decided to come down for Page + Plant at the Skydome instead, and I stand by that decision.

    Tim

  7. Hey deranger,

Yes that was my first Black Crowes gig, sadly I hadn't seen them before that night at Massey Hall.

And though I have seen the Crowes many times since, that still might be my favorite of them all.

The Crowes playing the Flying Burrito Bros "Hot Burrito #2" was an introduction to a young suburbanite like myself to Gram Parsons beyond the Byrds 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo.'

Also their that the Crowes covered such an obscure Rolling Stones song in "Silver Train" also blew my mind.

  8. What is the definition of an informal venue and a formal venue?

If by reserved seats, whether they are put to use or not, the Gov't Mule performed at the Danforth Music Hall with Chris Robinson's New Earth Mud a couple of years ago, which I think is a nice concert/movie theatre.

I missed the Palais Royale gig but here are all the venues I believe the Gov't Mule have performed at in Toronto as headliners:

    The Opera House (Multiple times)

    The Comfort Zone (2000)

    The Danforth Music Hall (2003)

    Palais Royale (2004)

    Kool Haus (2005)

Here are the venues that the Mule opened for somebody else:

The Molson Amphitheatre (1998 for the H.O.R.D.E.)

Kool Haus (Then the Warehouse 1998 for Big Sugar)

I agree with secondtube where I don't see why the Mule at one point couldn't play a headlining set at one of the more formal venues in Toronto. In 1996 the Black Crowes played at Massey Hall, so the possibility for the Mule is there, though the would have to become significantly more popular for Massey.

But as secondtube said U of T's Convocation Hall is a likely candidate for a Mule headline set one day.

  9. athe nod to gordie johnson and big sugar was great.

what was the nod? just a 'we love big sugar' quote or something? or did some of the boys join the mule?

    ad

warren said something to the effect that "the last time we played here (kool hous) we had a great Canadian band open for us...big sugar. we're gonna close out the night by doing one of their favourites..."

something like that couldnt hear every word.

When Gov't Mule played with Big Sugar when the Kool Haus was the Warehouse, Gov't Mule opened the gig, they did not close it.

It was on Friday November 6, 1998. And during the Big Sugar set Warren Haynes came out and did the BTO song "Let it Ride" and then the Mule came out for the encore with Big Sugar.

A great night, all those many years ago now.

    Tim

  10. whoops, sorry timmyb, i missed that. there was so much to skim through. ;) hahaha

    i retract my comment completely.

    (i was only joking anyway :D )

and yeah. that's a wow worthy list for sure. you could probably feed a small country for all those ticket stubs!

Or I would be half way through a mortgage on a home by now, which is something I from time to time think about.

    Tim

  11. I love the Mule, but I like Jaimoe will also be passing on this gig tonight based on cash flow.

I saw them at bonnaroo for, I have to count it up based on this list I need to make, I don't know how many times. So I feel alright passing by on them tonight.

I hope everybody enjoys the gig.

    Tim

  12. FYI for all those who were debating on going to this Queen + Paul Rodgers show before Basher said the cheapest tickets were $130 plus.

I heard from my friend Andrew from ClubQ that the cheapest tickets for the upcoming Queen show will be in the $50-60 range.

I wouldn't have paid $130 but I'll pay $60 to see Brian May again.

    Tim

  13. I have the next week and a half off of work, so I'll have to get back to you. That being said it might take me until Christmas to figure it out. But since I have every ticket stub, minus a handful, and I have hundreds of notepads I should be able to give a pretty accurate estimate.

Be warned I never saw Jerry Garcia, I know I'm an idiot. So when my list is done and posted don't be looking around for that because you're not going to find Jerry there :(

    Tim

  14. Actually as best as I can recall, for not being in attendance it was 1993 at the Skydome, possibly Skytent as they used to call it.

I luckily saw Johnny Cash ever so briefly at the Concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and Kris Kristofferson in Massey Hall for a Ronnie Hawkins tribute. But sadly I never saw Waylon Jennings live, may he rest in peace.

As I said though for those who love Willie Nelson, the old man is still great and you all should go.
