  1. Hey where was everybody last night? I'm guessing at nero/Contact in Toronto. I hope Ken will still be willing to bring Shannon Lyon back again, even though last nights show was so poorly attended.

After seeing Shannon Lyon perform a solo set for the first time this year opening for Jay Farrar (formerly of Uncle Tupelo and the recently reformed Son Volt) he won me over as a fan. I saw Shannon solo again at PJC in July. This time was the first time I saw Shannon perform with a rhythm section and on electric intruments.

It was another short but sweet set of Lyon's material, and I can't help but think that he would perform longer if there were more than twenty people watching him perform. MarcO compared him stylistically to Neil Young which I never saw before, until I saw him play some guitar solos on his hollow body Gretch last night. Lyon does craft his guitar work on electric guitar in the same vein of Young. Generally I find Lyon sounds quite a bit like Steve Earle, especially the way he paces his songs lyrically.

Here's the setlist from last nights show.

    Start time 12:00am

    1. You Showed Me How (w/harp)

    2. Carry Me Down

    3. Olde Freightliner

    4. Barcelona

    5. Did You Know That

    6. Could You Be My Light

    7. Sometimes It Hurts

    8. I Could Cry (I don't know about this title?)

    9. Since I'm Loving You (w/harp)

Encore: 10. Lake Huron (Like Your Own)(w/harp)

    11. How Did You Get So Lonely (I don't know about this title?)

    12. Bound>Ring Of Fire>Bound

End set 1:05am (Total time 1 hour and 5 minutes)

PS Hey Ken I hope you give Shannon another chance at PJC, next time there has to be more peole than last night.

    Robertson Crafting Band Box Set

Fans of the Band should mark their calendars for May 2005, when Capitol/EMI is slated to release a box set, curated by band member Robbie Robertson. "I'm working on the definitive musical history of the Band," Robertson tells Billboard. The seminal group, which included Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel, famously disbanded in 1976, as captured in the Martin Scorsese-directed concert film, "The Last Waltz."

Robertson says the five-CD set will include more than 100 songs, many of them previously unreleased, as well as a DVD. The artist was also involved in "Across the Great Divide," a three-CD set released in 1994. However, this Band collection will include more unreleased material.

Billboard caught up with Robertson at a party for the film "Ladder 49," where he performed his song "Shine Your Light," the movie's end title, and jammed with Dave Stewart and the party's host, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

Robertson says he is also revisiting the music for "Raging Bull" for a two-CD soundtrack that will be released Feb. 15 by Capitol. He wrote the source music and scored three pieces for the 1980 movie, as well as selected the other music with director Scorsese.

"I'm just finishing mixing and compiling the original music. It's 38 tracks," Robertson says. Additionally, he and Scorsese wrote the liner notes. It marks the first time a soundtrack to the film has been released. A special-edition DVD of "Raging Bull" comes out Dec. 14.

But Robertson seems most excited about his work on a Native American musical with the working title "Ceremony." The artist, who is part Native American, is writing the music for the Broadway project, David Henry Wang ("M. Butterfly") is penning the book and David Lavoie ("Nine") is directing.

I never thought the Band's "Across The Great Divide" was a very good box set. I mean it was only three discs of one rare disc of material and two of greatest hits.

This new box set looks like it will be a lot more fitting. Five discs and a DVD, I can't wait to watch the DVD and hear some more rare and unreleased Band material!

  3. This is great news!

I agree with you completely Jaimoe. Each of the last two times Son Volt came to Toronto to perform I was on the west coast seeing Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit. Obviously I have no regrets about those decisions I just couldn't believe it was two years in a row.

Since I finally got to see Jay Farrar accompanied by Mark Spencer at Lee's Palace this past spring. At the show Jay performed four Son Volt songs "Driving The View," "Straightface," "Tear Stained Eye" and "Windfall." I really hope that I get to see Son Volt do these songs next year, and a couple of Uncle Tupelo songs as well would make me even more happy.

    Billboard Bits: Son Volt

Roots-rock outfit Son Volt has reunited and is about to begin work on a new studio album. Group members Jay Farrar, Dave and Jim Boquist and Mike Heidorn recently ended a five-year hiatus to record a track for the Alejandro Escovedo tribute album, "Por Vida." The group is planning to return to the road next year.

"It felt like we hit the ground running," Farrar says. "Give years seemed like five days at that point. It proved that more recording and performing as Son Volt is something that should happen."

Son Volt's last studio album was 1998's "Wide Swing Tremolo," which peaked at No. 93 on The Billboard 200. Farrar's most recent solo release came in June with the live collection "Stone, Steel & Bright Lights," issued on his own Transmit Sound label.

I'm so happy Son Volt are getting back together! I have yet to see them live yet I hope that changes in 2005.

  7. Hey everybody I was unable to attend this years Farm Aid as it was in Seattle, Washington, breaking a 6 year Farm Aid streak for me. Of course Neil Young pulls out four classic tunes I have yet to see live. "Journey Through The Past," "On The Way Home," "Birds" and "Human Highway." Though I hope this show, much like the one he performed in Berkeley on September 15 is just a taste of what is to possibly come next year. Touring a rock opera of "After The Gold Rush" perhaps?

  8. It was a lot of fun interviewing Alan Evans last night. It's a long interview, so if you just skimmed over it and are a fan of Charlie "Bird" Parker read the last main question where I ask "One last question, I always want to ask this about bands that usually release instrumental material. How do you come up with the title of the song?" During Alan's answer he goes into an amazing story about his father seeing Parker.

Just to clarify, Soulive's last gig in Toronto was as an opener during the Phil Lesh & Friends show at the Molson Amphitheatre on July 9, 2002. moe. was also on the bill.

Soulive's setlist at the Molson Amphitheatre in 2002:

Steppin', Flurries, Hurry Up...And Wait, Tuesday Night Squad

  9. I do have the unreleased movie "Journey Through The Past" on VHS though...

I wish I lived in the Bay area, at least until Neil Young passes away.

    Bite your tongue.

Hey Esau, We all have to die sometime. Maybe I should say I wish to live in the Bay area until Neil stops performing more gigs there than anywhere else.

I too have "Journey Through the Past" on tape, the first of many great? Neil Young films. I just always wanted to here a song from "Time Fades Away" which the song "Journey Through the Past" appears. Also it mentions Canada in it which always gives me the chills.

Yorke Gives R.E.M. A Lift In London

R.E.M. unveiled several songs from its upcoming Warner Bros. album, "Around the Sun" in London last night (Sept. 15) at a secret gig in a London church. Staged and recorded for broadcast by BBC Radio 2, the gig was held at St. James' Church in Piccadilly, and featured a surprise guest appearance by Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke.

The show opened with "Animal," from R.E.M.'s 2003 best-of "In Time," but thereafter was dominated by material from "Around the Sun," due Oct. 4 internationally and a day later in North America. After lead singer Michael Stipe quipped to journalists that he didn't want to see any reviews of the event headlined "Losing Their Religion," the band performed such new songs as "Wanderlust," "I Wanted To Be Wrong," "Final Straw" and the album's title track

Yorke joined the band for a guest vocal on the 1996 hit "E-Bow the Letter," while the encore featured new single "Leaving New York" and 1992's "Man on the Moon." The show will air Oct. 23 on Radio 2.

R.E.M. has confirmed the U.K. and Irish leg of its 2005 European tour, which will see them play six shows from Feb. 19-26, with other European shows preceding them from Jan. 7-Feb. 11. The band will also play outdoor U.K. shows next summer, including a massive July 9 Hyde Park date.
