  1. Also, as a music venue, it's not the best. It's too narrow, and the way the stage is set up, the soundboard is at the back corner, so if you're manning the board, you can't hear what it sounds like out front, and if you want to get out front, you have to walk through the band.

They also need more restroom facilities: one toilet per gender is not enough.

    Aloha,

    Brad

I agree. I've been there when the sound was poor and I've been there when the sound was OK. What doesn't change is the narrow lay-out and lack of washroom facilities. It may simply be that these guys have outgrown this venue.

  2. JAMES McKENTY & The SPADES

    @ The Pour House

62 William St. (in the market)

    Friday, Jun.24 & Saturday, Jun.25

    10:00 pm.

    No cover charge.

Hope some folks can make it out.

Always great to see some familiar faces ...and meet some new ones.

    The rock will be hot.

Last time I saw these guys they were on fire,

    The-Spades-in-flames.jpg

but don't take my word for it.

  3. Like I said. I've never seen them stretch out like that, it was great to see. I'm all about a band that sounds great on disc and brings their game when they play; the structure of their record is there but they take it a step further live. larry_llama taped it, will try to get a sample up.

Rev, Glad to hear you guys were able to make it out. Look forward to hearing some tunes.

  4. Growing up as i did across from a rink (Harold Harvey in Kingston), the Scott Young trilogy - Scrubs on Skates/Boy on Defence/Boy at the Leafs' Camp - was an absolute must read. In fact, those 3 books carried a bunch of us guys thru elementary school. Every time the good Sister asked the class to write a story, we would rewrite one of these stories, and every time they asked us to do a book report, we would report on one of these books and then trade the reports among ourselves so we didn't have to write new reports the next time. We probably handed in 20+ reports (many the exact same...give or take a word or 2) on the same three books in the same school year....and then did the same the next year...and the next!

They weren't literary masterpieces, but they successfully captured a young lad's hockey dreams and saved our educational butts!

    Thank you, Scott.

    RIP

  5. Im sober now and I'm making a change. I'm removing Led Zeppelin I and replacing it with this rival masterpiece and band:

:thumbup:good move, Jaimoe. i remember when this album came out, Beck took a shit-kicking from critics for calling it "truth." Seems silly now....actually it seemed silly then too.
  6. In no particular order:

    The Essential Jimi Hendrix

Exile on Main Street - Rolling Stones

    The Doors - The Doors

    Songs of Leonard Cohen

Let It Bleed - Rolling Stones

    The River - Bruce Springsteen

Late For The Sky - Jackson Browne

    The Band - The Band

After the Gold Rush - Neil Young

The Name of This Band is Talking Heads

Can't believe I did that list and there's no Tom Petty, Bob Dylan or T. Rex. When do we do the top 20?

  7. WE WILL BE BACK TO CANADA. I can promise you that.

Yes' date=' but will you [b']play? Jesus!

[color:purple]I can't wait to see these guys!

Guigsy hit the nail on the head with his "customer service" remark. I don't expect any band to take a hit because of poor promotion, but to pack up your gear and head back across the border when you're already in Canada still feels like a big "fuck you" to any fans here...despite the we're-really-sorry-perhaps-we-didn't-make-the-right-decision-see-you-in-the-fall disclaimer.

I agree...wholeheartedly. Someone should enlighten these guys as to the realities of life on the road. Seems every time they encounter something they don't like, their solution is to turn around and go home. How mature! There is nothing to date in this band's explanations that would indicate why they left the Sunseekers Festival high and dry.... other than the sad fact that it was scheduled at the same time as they were throwing one of their hissie fits. Grow up,boys!

  8. Dr. J, you think Travis Good will show up again this Thursday?

Not sure about Thursday, KevO. If I hear anything I'll pass it on.

Will also be interesting to see what happens @ the Horse Shoe Saturday night since the Spades and Sadies are both on the bill.

I know The Spades are about to announce the dates for a tour of western Canada. Don't know if there's anything in the works beforehand for London. Will keep you posted guigs.

Always glad to share what i don't know :)

  9. guigsy, a couple of weeks ago, the Spades did a show at the Aron Theatre in Campbellford (Mooose & I were there). Travis and the boys (The Rising Sons???) opened with a really cool set, but for me the highlight came during The Spades' set when Travis rejoined them and they launched into a version of Neil Young's Powder Finger that absolutely shook the place! you would have loved it, man!

"look out mama there's a white boat comin' up the river"

  10. Nice article...thanks Meggo. i once saw Dave perform from atop a table at the Montreal House in Peterborough. Great stuff! Hope their show translates well to the larger stage. Dave is nothing if not a stickler for detail, so you gotta know they're gonna be ready. Will be a fun time for sure.

  11. Don't have much authority on the subject. Wasn't at Sarstock, didn't watch it on TV and haven't seen the Stones in 30+ years. What I do know having seen them (and many others) prior to that was IMO the Stones were quite simply the greatest rock 'n' roll band on the planet. That's right. There was a time when it wasn't just hype. They were tight, edgy and could kick ass like no one else. I still believe their album sequence '68 - '72 (Beggar's Banquet/Let It Bleed/Sticky Fingers/Exile on Main Street) is the benchmark by which any rock band that aspires to greatness must eventually measure itself.

Is it all just in the past? I dunno. Are The Stones what they once were. Obviously not...none of us are...but that fact only becomes disappointing when people refuse to recognize it. Hopefully, Keith and Mick themselves have come to that realization, and will prepare for the tour accordingly. If they do, folks will be in for a treat and some will be in for a surprise.

  12. What genre of music do they play?

about the only term that comes to mind is power-pop. The kind of thing that the Kinks aand Small Faces were doing in another era and Rod Stewart for that matter before he starting doing.....whatever he does. The Golden Dogs do stellar covers of Neil Young's Helpless and McCartney's 1985 if that helps to locate them. A fun live band  2 thumbs up
