  1. ... I don't feel very sorry for all the stations I've stopped listening to out of spite for having more and more crap pushed at me during the past couple of decades with the hopes of selling more and more product... I feel degraded by the way I've been treated by radio and look forward to other mediums

(but yes... long live CBC and independent college/university radio)

know what you mean, paisley.....and just a reminder of The Rev's radio program tomorrow morning from 6:00 - 9:00 am The Reverend's Attic Click on webcast. I know it's early, but this guy knows his stuff and spins some fantastic music. it was here that i first encountered Gov't Mule and the Burt Neilson Band and the North Mississippi All-stars...I know...I know....I've been a bit of a musical recluse for the last number of years, but people like the Rev and others are re-connecting me. So yes long live independent radio!

  2. I doubt you'll get at chance to see them in a venue that small again...

Sometimes in order to save space the bass player for the GD will play the night from on top of his amp...saw that at the Grad Club in Kingston. I've also seen Dave the guitar player play from the top of a table...but that was for no apparent reason :: hehe Lotsa fun! Be sure to catch these guys.

  3. hey boogie, missed ya' last night buddy. Early on i managed to piss off a couple of big guys in toques and to annoy a couple of good-lookin' red-haired women, but for my own safety, i gave that up :: Catch ya' next time.

As expected, it was an amazing night. The place was jam-packed and the crowd was into it right from the opening notes of "Joints & Cigarettes." The Spades opened with a short set, then the The Golden Dogs played a set and then the Spades shut the place down, ending with an encore of "Burning on Fumes" and a standing ovation (setlists are posted on www.thespades.ca).

As noted elsewhere on this board The Golden Dogs are just a bundle of manic energy and their smokin' cover of McCartney's 1984 was a show-stopper! Seeing Dave Azzolini dancing on the table during this particular song was hilarious.

The Spades laid down two wicked sets....some of the hottest rock I've seen from them yet. "Powerlines" "Wired For Sound" and "Zombies" were particularly strong and "Mafia Sting" "49 Tons" "Burn Things" and "Marijuana" all brought roars of approval from the MoHo crowd. They intro'd a new original "The Business of Being Friends" and sent a collective shiver through the crowd when they launched into a blistering rendition of Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues"!!!! Suddenly, it was like someone really was pissed off that "the vandals stole the handles"......great song.....great night!!!!

  4. hey boogieknight this is great news. I'll keep an eye out for you. I keep an eye out for beautiful red-haired women anyways so that won't be a problem:: means there'll be a few of us to keep Moose informed. Were you there the night The Spades cranked up Fire on the Mountain? She must have been beside herself:: I'm with ya on the encore too....

  5. for an evening of rock & roll madness at The Montreal House with my favourite double bill...The Spades & The Golden Dogs. What a sweet one this will be. Gotta try and remember what went down musically & otherwise tho cause Moose is out of town and will expect a report. sh!t, pressure may be too much. Last time I went to the Moho, I stole the setlist and then forgot what i did with it....help!

"I like to burn things whoaaa yeeaah" (The Spades)

  6. late...as usual...for me, Springsteen's album "The River" was one of the few sources of rock & roll comfort in the 80's. I loved it (still do). Because of his overriding sense of rock history (and his own place in it), there has always been a side to Springsteen's work that has tended to the theatrical. IMO when this side is allowed to dominate, the work as del points out can sometimes seem forced or manipulated. But when he transcends the hype and sh!t and just pumps it out from the gut as he once could, the guy IMO is just incredible. In fact, his last show in Ottawa (Apr.18/03) was among the strongest performances I've seen him deliver in recent memory. I too look forward to seeing what develops this time around.

  7. Great CD. Solid from beginning to end by one of my favourite artists. Agree with Dave-O... the last two tracks are stand-outs. Song-writing at it's finest. Don't miss Joel if he's anywhere near. As said...an absolute treasure.

  8. ...with two sets that night I'm sure we'll heard Words or perhaps some other tasty covers.

No doubt, Rev. altho they only do a few covers per show, over time i've heard them do Louis Jordan/Ry Cooder/Fred Eaglesmith/Johnny Cash/Willie Nelson/Neil Young/Lou Reed/Elvis Presley as well as Cake and Wilco. so you never know.
