But what sets Higgs apart is her predilection for mixing acoustic balladry with synthesized flourishes—call it folktronica. The fiddle-fueled opener "Parables" features cascading vocal loops, while the buzzing "Apples" may owe something to Higgs' role in the trip-hop project Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees. Compelling lyrics + experimental arrangements = another adventurous Canadian artist." - Nicholas Jennings, Inside Entertainment "One of the coolest new voices I've heard lately belongs to Halifax singer-songwriter Rebekah Higgs; aching and a little world weary on songs like Winding Watch and Love Is, she's a strong entry into the world of East Coast pop chanteuses." - Stephen Cooke, Halifax Chronicle Herald WEBS: http://www.myspace.com/rebekahhiggs http://www.myspace.com/secretannieshawsongs http://www.myspace.com/ohnoforestfires http://www.myspace.com/petevandyk INFLUENCES ACCORDING TO REBEKAH: mega phones, loops, pedals, dirty floors, dirty hair, laundry days, sleeping in, playing crib, solitude, homesickness, love symptoms, disgust, pianos, guitars, violins, glockenspiels, synths, kaos pads, you tube, making plans, breaking promises, george bush, panhandling, shirley temple, old judy garland films, mr dress up, sketch books, painting, making art from garbage and scraps, heartache, politics, poverty and substances
  6. [color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents FRIDAY JUNE 27, 2008 JOSE GONZALEZ with special guests TBD 8PM Drs, 9PM Show || LIC-AA || $20 Tickets Available beginning 04-23-08 at Casbah Lounge, Dr.Disc, on-line at http://www.casbahlounge.ca CASBAH :: 306 King St W || 905-521-4441 González was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. His parents moved from Argentina to Sweden in 1978. González grew up listening to Latin folk and pop music, and has named Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez as a favourite artist.[1] José González studied for a Ph.d in Biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg. The first band he played in was Back Against the Wall, a Gothenburg hardcore punk band influenced by Black Flag, The Misfits and the Dead Kennedys.[2] He later played bass guitar in another hardcore band, Renascence, between 1993–1998.[3]. Between 1997-1998 Jose played guitar with emo-rock band Only if you call me Jonathan. In 2003, he released his debut album, Veneer, in Europe. The album was subsequently released in the UK on 25 April 2005, and in the United States on 6 September 2005. His trademark sound is solo classical guitar with soft vocal melody. His work, although mostly original, also includes acoustic covers of such hits as "Heartbeats" by his fellow Swedes The Knife, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division, "Born in the U.S.A." and "The Ghost of Tom Joad" by Bruce Springsteen, "Hand on Your Heart" by Kylie Minogue, "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat, "Teardrop" by Massive Attack and "Last Snowstorm of the Year" by Low. His second album, In Our Nature, was released internationally on 22 September 2007. The album's lyrical content was in part influenced by his reading of books like The God Delusion by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and Practical Ethics by ethicist Peter Singer WEBS: http://www.jose-gonzalez.com http://www.last.fm/music/Jos%c3%a9+Gonz%c3%a1lez http://www.myspace.com/josegonzalez

Her identity was revealed when she went into labour and shortly after Tom's birth was forced to walk the plank. Tom was taken ashore by an aging sailor named Whisky Gibbons who deposited him at a brothel on the edge of a small town somewhere outside of anywhere. So it was that Tom spent most of his childhood being raised by call girls, learning cuss words and card tricks from tramps, vagabonds and outlaws, developing a fondness for cheap perfume, bourbon & show tunes. When Tom was 13, having learned all he could learn at the brothel he set out on his own, finding himself at a rock quarry, smashing rocks into pebbles and pebbles into dust. He was taken under the wing of a seasoned miner - a black man named Alibi Slims. On top of showing Tom how to drink without taking his cigarette out of his mouth, Alibi taught Tom how to sing the gospel songs he learned growing up; "You've gotta sing 'em with yer nuts, child". Years passed and Tom had smashed a mountain into dust. Grabbing his few meagre possessions (including a pocket-sized sun dial and the 4 stringed guitar Alibi had given him), he hopped a refrigerated box-car and "hiccuped his way across the country". Some more time went by; new bottles of whisky turned old and the Good Ship Tommy Fun found itself docked in the rumored 'basement' of the abandoned Vogue theatre in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Here Tom began constructing his laboratory dedicated to "tin-can clanking, bottle cap- tapping & dizzy, dizzy shaking". As word spread of the late night howling heard to be emitted from the bowels of the Vogue, a league of turned-on, former gentlemen began joining Tom in his laboratory for "all night celebrations of musical excess and prescribed chaos". By means of their musical genius, The Holy Microphone Machine - as they became known - began to supersonically spread Tom's message to an ever-growing congregation.

It started with her piano-teacher mum, but along the way Basia’s picked up guitar, autoharp, banjo, ukulele, sax and flute. In high-school her instrument was the upright bass – a lone girl among “eight-foot-tall guys, goofing off with the tubasâ€. There’s a sense of play that still suffuses her music, jostling under the songs of regret and love, want and joy. When her brother began in his teens to play drums with punk bands, Basia would be there with her Demerara voice, joining happily in the jam. When she left for university in London, Ontario, musicians began to drop by her downtown apartment. Many nights were spent with these classically-trained friends, laughing and singing, and together they made a glad, bright noise. Basia and her band have toured central Canada and Europe, sharing stages with the likes of the Great Lake Swimmers, Julie Doiron, Hayden, Sondre Lerche, and The Veils, leaving a trail of new fans and happy critics along the way. In mid-2007 a Canadian deal was inked with Hayden’s Hardwood Records, preceding a Western Canada tour with Final Fantasy this fall. Oh, My Darling is a pet project no longer, but Basia’s ambitions are unchanged from those early days of that tiny apartment: “I love songs that I can sing along to,†Basia says, and then she corrects herself, balling her hand into a fist. “No, songs that you want to sing along to.†=============================================== Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basia_Bulat Youtube: Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/basiamyspace CBC Radio3: http://radio3.cbc.ca/bands/Basia-Bulat
  11. [color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents WEDNESDAY APRIL 23, 2008 BUCK 65 with special guests CADENCE WEAPON SKRATCH BASTID **featuring a short set of music involving all three artists** WESTSIDE CONCERT THEATRE Hamilton, Ontario 434 King Street West || LIC-AA || Tickets on sale Tuesday March 4, 2008 Available at Casbah Lounge, Dr.Disc, Westside and www.casbahlounge.ca http://www.myspace.com/buck65 Let's start with the beginning: Buck 65 (aka Richard Terfry, aka Stinkin' Rich) is as old as his age. But it's not because he's less young than the others that he's less intelligent. Far from it. Matter of fact, he's from Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, which proves a lot (what exactly will never be known). As a toddler he already knew that, his name being Richard, it was written that he should meet Robert Squire, aka Sixtoo, in Halifax, and thus form the Sebutones (that was in 1996, if my source is exact). This is precisely what happened, which gives much credit to destiny, I guess. But a whole bunch of other interesting stuff happened in his life. For example, he met Mr Dibbs, and that's how you become a member of the -multi talented- 1200 Hobbos. Buck 65 can do anything and everything, and that's precisely the reason why he actually does everything: DJ, MC, he created a label (Four Ways To Rock), he does commercials for the NBA, played a part in Sesame Street...just like every human being does, but way better. http://www.myspace.com/cadenceweaponmusic http://www.myspace.com/skratchbastid FOR PRESS/PUBLICITY INFORMATION: contact brodiebooksrock@yahoo.ca

My independently-released EP, "Earth Sciences," is being re-issued by Paper Bag Records February 25th, so watch out for it in your local stores! At Soundscapes in Toronto, you can find my second EP, "Ursula" (Ta Da! Records), which features the hugely talented Richard Carnegie on double bass, and a music video for "Robot Ponies." However, if you're one of the 5.996 billion people who do not live in Toronto, please e-mail me at laurabarrettmusic (at) gmail dot com to figure out how to get your hands on it. The Superfantastics (from Halifax, NS) With Pop-Up Book, The Superfantastics have delivered ten songs that take pop music back to its essentials. Melodic, dynamic and arranged with a unique sensibility, each track harkens back to a school of song craft made famous in the mid to late 60's. The collection strays between a focused minimalism to a driving wall of sound, all the while keeping songwriting in the spotlight. Made up of Matt MacDonald (guitar, vocals) and Steph d'Entremont (drums, vocals), the band has been performing dates throughout the East Coast for over a year now. In May of 2006 they released the acclaimed EP, Like Letters, only to sell out of the initial pressing. The video for the single "What Will You Do Now?" was featured on MuchMusic's The Wedge, Going Costal and was added into rotation on Bravo TV. Sarah Good (from Hamilton, ON) View it:

[color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents WEDNESDAY MARCH 5, 2008 Casbah Lounge (unit B, beside the concert venue) 306 King St W || 905-521-4441 || http://www.casbahlounge.ca 9PM || LIC-AA || $5 at the door SAID THE WHALE JOEL ELLIOTT HOLLERADO Said The Whale (from Vancouver, BC) The collective brainchild of Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft and recently turned 5-piece band, Said the Whale is as much a product of Vancouver's tremendous natural beauty as it is of the city's budding independent music scene. With a solid fan base accumulated from a litany of previous bands (My Buddy Dave, The Millionaires, WordsOverMusic) Said the Whale are quickly winning over new fans with every show. Their unique blend of eclectic indie rock captures the essence of what it means to be young, free, and occasionally heartbroken in your early 20s. Theirs is the sound of a thousand summers spent lying under a star-filled canopy in the middle of a field. Original, incisive, and destined to set the independent music scene on fire, it is the sound of Said the Whale. Joel Elliott (from Hamilton, Ontario) View it: Hollerado (from Manotick, Ontario) "Utilizing some sweet harmonies between two of the guys, Hollerado brought in some barn-burning melodies. This was like country (complete with whistling drummer) being played by a doo-wop group from the '60s. They even had a song about the second coming of the Ice Age that included both a sweet bass line and a Stones "Miss You" sample, which got audience members doing the soft-shoe down in front." -- Chart Magazine
  14. [color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents TUESDAY FEBRUARY 19, 2008 8PM Drs, 9PM Show || LIC-AA || $8 at the door CASBAH || 306 King St W || 905-521-4441 || www.casbahlounge.ca SEAN MacDONALD BAND (members of Burt Neilson Band) THE SUBTERRANEANS COLLECTIVE (local rootsy post-rock) THE ROYAL SHOTS (for fans of The Young Canadians) BLACK MARKET REVOLUTION (New local alt-pop) Video: http://www.seanmacdonald.ca/video/ Coming from the largely under-rated Vancouver based band, The Ids, is Sean Macdonald with his first solo outing. The album is a fairly happy (in sound anyway) album in the vein of the Eels where songs sound happy and pleasant but when you dig down under the lyrics you find out that most of the tracsk are dark. Produced by Todd Simko (Pure), the album has a very crisp and clear production which does this type of music. Sean successfully leaves behind all images that may have been lingering from his Guided By Voices-type band, the Ids and has moved into a more accessible pop sound. Because this release is currently only available in Canada in limited release you will be able to find it at http://www.werkshop.com.
  15. E.A.T.T.B. had to cancel due to line-up changes. Jer from BNB will be back Feb 19th in the SEAN MacDONALD BAND at Casbah.
