Presents THURSDAY NOVEMBER 15, 2007 Neo-Psychedelia's Founding Father ROBYN HITCHCOCK (Formerly of The Soft Boys) with special guest SEAN NELSON (of Harvey Danger) 9PM || $20 || 19+ (Limited all-ages) Tickets on sale Monday October 8 @ Casbah Lounge/Dr.Disc/Sonic Unyon and on-line at www.tixit.ca Casbah 306 King St W || 905-521-4441 casbahlounge.ca || More info brodiebooksrock@yahoo.ca Mr. Robyn Hitchcock One of rock & roll's most gifted eccentrics, Soft Boy frontman Robyn Hitchcock at his best evokes much of the same benign insanity that marked John Lennon's whimsicality -- at times, his songs even evoke a similar sense of melody. His first solo album, Black Snake Diamond Role, picks up pretty much where his work with the Soft Boys left off, even to the point of employing most of his former bandmates. Still, this suits the material, particularly the manic "Brenda's Iron Sledge" and the lovely, semipsychedelic "Acid Bird." Hitchcock's musical and lyrical styles have drawn influence from his appreciation of Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Syd Barrett. Hitchcock's lyrics have proved a central thrust of his work, and tend to include surrealism, comedic songs, characterizations of fictional English eccentrics and melancholy depictions of everyday life. The underlying themes of much of his output from the start of his career include what many psychologists view as the roots of modern neurosis - namely, death, sex and eating. [Recognising this theme, he released an EP in 2007 called "Sex, Food, Death and Tarantulas".] WEB: http://www.robynhitchcock.com/ http://www.yeproc.com/artist_info.php?artistId=171 http://www.myspace.com/robynhitchcock http://www.robynhitchcock.com/softdiscography.htm

Indeed, at the risk of sounding like the NME, this could be the best thing you hear all year." - Fat Controller UK "Sure to have tears welling and fists aloft in raucous salute." - Pop Matters Although Toronto novelist Chris Eaton performed as a solo artist in the late '90s and early 2000s under the name Rock Plaza Central (sometimes with any number of backing musicians), it wasn't until 2003 that Rock Plaza Central became a real band, recruiting Rob Carson (guitar, banjo, trombone), John Whytock (accordion, trumpet, percussion), Donald Murray (mandolin, trumpet), Scott Maynard (bass), and Blake Howard (drums), with Fiona Stewart (violin) joining in 2004, before releasing The World Was Hell to Us. Are We Not Horses (produced by Dinner Is Ruined's Dale Morningstar) followed in April 2007. JETPLANES OF ABRAHAM With the rise of the Hidden Cameras and Broken Social Scene came an increase in the activity of inter-band collectives. Making up a mini-collective of Ottawa, ON acts such as Kingston Fog, Turning Into Salt and For the Mathematics, JoA hit nary a wrong note on their debut, but sometimes their enthusiasm gets the best of them. Oozing a manic, youthful energy, there’s at least one song on this album to delight even the most hard-hearted. “Take the Cash†is earnest rock with shout-y harmonies but it’s got an undeniable catchiness that cannot be ignored. The band flirt with some cute indie on “Complications, Fascination & Quitting Your Job†but, luckily, a good dose of gang singing and a driving beat keep things from getting drowned in pretension. The real gem, and the key to why Jetplanes of Abraham are a band to keep an eye on, comes in the form of closer “For Now.†It starts off contemplative but begins to show its manic indie roots soon enough, thrusting the listener into layers of forceful harmonies, crashing cymbals and handclaps. Coming close to that rush of energy you got when you first heard Broken Social Scene and the Arcade Fire, “For Now†gives mighty hope to this budding band. 6. [color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents in association with Toyota Yaris/Exclaim Magazine THURSDAY NOVEMBER 1, 2007 THE MOST SERENE REPUBLIC DRAGONETTE, featuring Martina Sorbara & members of The NEW DEAL MOTHER MOTHER 1 Local Guest TBD 7:30PM Drs, 8:30PM Show Tickets on sale Now || Licensed/All-ages || $12 CASBAH 306 King St W | 905-521-4441 More Info brodiebooksrock@yahoo.ca MOST SERENE REPUBLIC At the rate they’re going, whether they mean to or not, The Most Serene Republic will alter the way in which people appreciate rock music. It might sound like a lofty achievement for an unlikely band of 20-somethings bred in the Toronto suburb of Milton, Ontario but if you pay close attention to their discography—particularly 2007’s Population—you’ll hear something entirely unique. Don’t disregard their dense art-pop breakthrough Underwater Cinematographer (2005) or the transitional tour EP, Phages (2006) completely; these are the keys to understanding how The Most Serene Republic came to form the masterful achievement that is Population, which might seem superficially sugary if it weren’t for the poison lurking under its remarkable layers of sound. Indeed, it’s difficult not to be swept up in the musical fray produced by The Most Serene Republic, which has undergone recent changes. In 2006, a brand new rhythm section comprised of bassist Simon Lukasewich and drummer Tony Nesbitt-Larking joined Jewett, Lenssen, vocalist/guitarist Emma Ditchburn, and guitarists Nick Greaves and Sean Woolven. Fans of the band will note that Population boasts a familiar bubbling sonic landscape with raucous, arty, pop structures and walls of ambient noise but the band are even heavier and mightier rhythmically than in the past. “I think we sound far more professional and the ideas started to meld,†Lenssen says. “The level of musicianship and the desire to be the best we can possibly be at any given moment started to happen in the last year.†Furthermore, there’s the addition of vocalist Ditchburn to the mix. On Underwater Cinematographer, Jewett’s high voice was a pretty, wondrous thing, floating beautifully over the dynamic musical shifts and voices that surrounded him. Live, he and the band unleashed themselves on audiences with manic energy and force, holding their own on tours with the Strokes, Metric, Stars, and Broken Social Scene. On Population, Jewett shares the microphone with Ditchburn’s comparably deep and sensual voice, and the sophisticated intermingling creates a whole new instrument for The Most Serene Republic. In challenging themselves to make music that is wholly unique yet spirited and engaging, The Most Serene Republic are far away from award shows and prizes. Population isn’t easy, it’s art—a musical call to arms for people to choose whether they’re passive patrons or sincerely down with having their minds blown. As such, like all great albums, Population isn’t going to come to you, you’re going to have to go to it. DRAGONETTE Described as a rock band who write pop songs, Dragonette are hot new stars with a twist! How can they possibly be different, I hear you cry? They’re a married couple for starters. Who gets married anymore? So old fashioned! Dragonette consists of Martina Sorbara and Dan Kurtz. They met at a festival... Martina: "I was the only chick on the bill, and I was singing what we affectionately call ‘tampon music’… You know, singer-songwriter, Ani DiFranco, Lilith Fair, Jewel-type music… tamponics! I didn’t wanna be strumming my fucking guitar for ever. I was so bored of that scene." Dan: "I was in an improvisational, experimental, drum & bass and breakbeat trio. We were from pretty disparate musical areas, the two opposite ends of this Nickelback moment that was happening on the eastern coast of Canada..." Martina: "and then we screwed." Dan: "And then I left my girlfriend." They currently reside in London and share a house with their drummer Joel. They’re a duo, but kinda not at the same time. The remaining Dragonette outfit are drummer Joel Stouffer and guitarist Will Stapleton. A melting pot of sexual energy and 80’s synthpop. They are perfectly happy making music that isn’t introspective, indie or overly emotional. Oh yeah, and random fact of the day - Martina’s stylist is best friends with Anamatronic from the Scissor Sisters. 9. [color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents Thursday September 20 Casbah 306 King St W || 905-521-4441 www.casbahlounge.ca 10PM Doors, 10:30PM Show || $10 **Late Show, following the LORI YATES Cd release party TORNGAT, Alien8 Recordings THE REST STEVEN McKAY Pietro Amato • Mathieu Charbonneau • Sylvain Delisle • Julien Poissant Torngat is a formidable trio hailing from the fertile and diverse musical community of Montreal. Up until now the band has enjoyed success in a few key cities, but with You Could Be things are about change. Although this is the band's third recording, a follow up to 2005's stellar La Rouge EP, it is their first full-length as a trio (their first cd was recorded as a quartet in 2002). The band has managed to sell through multiple pressings of their previous two recordings despite the fact that they were self-released, thanks in part to their extensive touring. Torngat is an instrumental trio made up of primarily drums, keyboards and French horn, although it is the multi-instrumentalism of all three players that really give Torngat that spark of something special. Julien Poissant is the band's drummer but also plays a variety of instruments on the album; in a live setting he can be found simultaneously playing extra keys with the left hand, bass drum with the right foot, high hat with the left foot and trumpet with the right hand. Wurlitzer and analog synth are Mathieu Charboneau's primary tools, but he is also known to juggle duties with xylophones, percussion, trumpet, melodicas additional keyboards and live electronic effects. French horn player Pietro Amato seasoned his chops performing with Bell Orchestre and has toured and recorded with Arcade Fire. Amato also contributes a host of other acoustic and electronic instrumentation as well as some vocals to the album. Torngat perform music that could be construed as post rock; like much of the genre they exude a strong cinematic quality. However, the music of Torngat is less dark and melancholic than most post rock sounding closer to what could be called chamber pop. Instead of doom and gloom the band delivers uplifting melodies and childlike fantasy inspired passages, yet still manage to infuse their songs with a certain emotional weight. The music evokes similar visions to that of Tom Waits, early Penguin Cafe Orchestra and fellow Canadian songsmith Patrick Watson (whom torngat has collaborated with on a recording for CBC's Fuse). You Could Be offers 12 instrumental selections that gently take the listener on a whimsical journey that is at times contemplative, but overall gives the feeling of hope and possibility. The record has been impeccably recorded and mixed by Marcus Paquin. Like all recordings by Torngat, You Could Be was recorded in the country allowing the opportunity for the band to focus on creativity without distraction. The album has a distinct 70s feel, incredibly warm and lush with a very nice bottom end. Standout pieces include Bordeaux Boredom, which has a wonderful hook made up of French horn and the beautiful interplay of colorful keys and light percussion to further shape the piece. Suite c) l'Océan, la nuit is a fine example of the balance of feelings that breath through much of the recording, not necessarily happy or sad, but contentment found somewhere in between. Celebrating New is without a doubt one of the album's stellar tracks. More upbeat, it brings the listener's spirits up and nicely rounds out the journey taken on You Could Be.
  10. [color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents Tuesday September 18th Casbah 306 King St W, Hamilton 905-521-4441 || www.casbahlounge.ca 8PM Drs, 9PM Show || $10 || Licensed (Limited all-ages) JULIE DOIRON BASIA BULAT plus THE LAST MIMZY JULIE DOIRON Band: Julie Doiron -- vocals/guitar Shotgun & Jaybird -- bass guitar, drums Julie Doiron - Woke Myself Up We all are driven to doing certain things and making certain decisions in our lives for any number of reasons, be it ambition, fear, greed or love. The last purpose is perhaps the most identifiable to most of us, and so it is no great mystery that that which drives us can both reward us immensely and plummet us into the greatest depths of inconsolable sadness and regret. On Julie Doiron's first album of new material in over two years, she addresses in her signature intimate songwriting style both the heights and the fallout in a way that forces the listener to reexamine their own loves. One of the most important and greatest loves in Julie's life is that towards her family. The first half of Woke Myself Up details the joy and awe that her family has given her. Immediately, one knows that her unabashed and unaffected lyrics are coming from a woman truly moved. The second half sees Julie making mistakes, blowing second chances, and coming to terms with the sad truth that one cannot live up to expectations set by herself or those she loves. The harrowing untitled final track (recorded and added to the album at the eleventh hour by Doiron) may very well be the most affecting of Doiron's performances ever committed to tape. download full bio Pop Matters "What seem on the surface to be short, simple, almost mundane little songs and up as valuable artistic ventures into subjects that most musicians either avoid or soak in treacly greeting card sentiment. Plus, they sound fantastic." - Michael Metivier BASIA BULAT For the summer of 2006 Basia went to live in Montreal. Through friends she met producer, engineer and co-owner of the famed Hotel 2 Tango studio, Howard Bilerman. Basia cashed in her "student loans" to record with Bilerman in one of the final sessions at the original H2T site, but by the third day she had lost her voice. It was ultimately these rough early takes, hoarse with excitement, that formed the bulk of Oh My Darling. Initially the recordings were meant only as an “audible memory†of the time Basia spent with friends in London and Montreal: â€We liked playing together so much, and I just wanted to remember that.†But Bilerman was smitten with the songs, with Basia and her band, and he began to write to friends at labels and with music-blogs, anyone who might pay attention. For despite the original intention, these tracks are breathless, thirsty, dislodged from dreary nostalgia. There are strings, yes, and acoustic guitar, but also a frantic drum-kit gallop. It’s this spark that sets Basia Bulat apart from the raft of typical singer-songwriters, and also what attracted the interest of Geoff Travis and Britain’s legendary Rough Trade label – who released Oh My Darling in Europe and Japan in the spring of 2007. Since then Basia and her band have toured central Canada and Europe, sharing stages with the likes of the Great Lake Swimmers, Julie Doiron, Sondre Lerche, and The Veils, leaving a trail of new fans and happy critics along the way. In mid-2007 a Canadian deal was inked with Hayden’s Hardwood Records, preceding a Western Canada tour with Final Fantasy this fall. Oh, My Darling is a pet project no longer, but Basia’s ambitions are unchanged from those early days of that tiny apartment: “I love songs that I can sing along to,†Basia says, and then she corrects herself, balling her hand into a fist. “No, songs that you want to sing along to.â€
