  1. Black Sabbath Adds First North American Show of Summer Tour

In support of their forthcoming LP 13 (produced by Rick Rubin), their first with Ozzy Osborne in 35 years, Black Sabbath is getting set for a world tour kicking off in New Zealand on April 20th. Late last week, Sabbath added their first North American date to the tour, announcing a show at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on August 14th, stirring up a hotbed of speculation as to additional dates in Canada and the US to satiate a hungry fanbase’s appetite for more. Additionally, the legendary metal band finally set an official date for the new LP (June 11th).

With the first shows only a month out now, the major still-remaining question is who will end up playing drums on the tour? The smart money is on Rage Against the Machine’s Brad Wilk, but it’s still anybody’s guess. Sabbath last appeared in the US on August 3rd at Lollapalooza and it’s still in question as to how many stateside shows, if any, hardcore fans can expect to see around the Toronto appearance. For now, it’s just a good step in the right direction.

  2. Legendary Ottawa freak-rockers Bob Loblaw host a solo evening of their own brand of cerebral partyrock at the city's coolest venue, Cafe Dekcuf.

    Cafe Dekcuf

    221 Rideau Street

    $8/19+/9pm

After fifteen years steeped in individual musical projects, the four members of Bob Loblaw have reformed and have plugged themselves back into Ottawa's alternative-to-the-alternative music scene. Bob Loblaw spent the 1990's crafting a catalogue of material and an over-the-top live show that led to a reputation for being the wackiest and tightest prog-Zappa-reggae-punk-alt-delete-country outfit in Centretown.

While the original life of Bob Loblaw encompassed five years of shows throughout Ontario and a full-length release entitled “Monkey Doâ€, the newly resurrected group intends to go much further. The band has always had a penchant for bridging genre-chasms and years of individual musical exploration (Mash Potato Mashers, Backtalk Organ Trio, The Gutterboys, Burnt Reynolds, Resurrection Quartet) only casts a wider stylistic net for Bob Loblaw to bring together.

It's been a long winter of rehearsing and songwriting in the Bob Loblaw camp and the band is hyped to get back in front of a live audience and try out a host of new material.

  3. Burger King to J-Hud:

    Free Burgers for Life!

Burger King has awarded Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson an all-you-can-eat pass for their fast food restaurants... for life! Have it your way... forever!

Hudson reacted to Simon Cowell's criticism of her for not thanking "American Idol" in her Oscar speech. She reportedly snapped back, "If I'd been any better at my job when I was at Burger King in my middle teens, I wouldn't be here either, so should I thank them, too?" Hudson worked at the BK on East 87th and State Street in Chicago. Burger King was her first job at age 16, where she worked with her sister, who claims she sang while working the drive-thru and flipping burgers.

In an exclusive statement to TMZ, Burger King responded to Hudson's beef, assuring her that no thanks is necessary, and awarded her with BK for life:

"...In response to Jennifer's recent comments in which she asked if she should be thanking Burger King, we say thanks, but no thanks are necessary. Burger King Corporation is proud of Jennifer's success and while we never like to lose employees, in this case, our loss is the entertainment industry's gain ... To further show our support for Jennifer, and make sure she never has to sing for her supper again, Burger King Corporation is giving her a pre-paid BK Crown Card that will be automatically reloaded for life."

Looks like a whopper of a win for Jennifer.

Ottawa's premier talent has banded together to raise funds for Instruments For Africa, an Ottawa-based initiative that sends musical instruments to needy schools in Zambia.

Berekete Afrobeat Band is a 15-piece multicultural groove machine that has been getting Ottawa on the dance floor since May 2012. What started as a one-off tribute to the creator of Afrobeat and Nigerian political figurehead Fela Kuti at the Mercury Lounge - The Afrobeat Project - turned into a 7 month residency that has built a loyal following.

Berekete Afrobeat Band is Ottawa's purveyor of the legendary West African sounds of the Afrobeat giants, with a blistering 5-piece horn section, soulful singers, with a monstrous rhythm section holding down the groove.

For the IFA benefit concert, Berekete Afrobeat Band will present dance music by Mr. Ebo Taylor, considered to be the current living master of Ghanian style Afrobeat.

Along with 9 European tours, countless awards including a Juno, national status in Canada and now 6 albums under his belt, Tony D has established himself as a player and performer who delivers the goods.

When he was 19 years of age, Tony had the pleasure of performing with the legendary Buddy Guy, starting a trend that would see him share the stage with such greats as Luther Allison, Bryan Adams and Michelle Shocked. A consummate performer, Tony D has supported the likes of both Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan, Albert Collins, Robin Ford, Robert Cray, Koko Taylor and The Doobie Brothers.

Local hotshots Tindervox have been extremely busy stamping their brand all over town, consistently playing Ottawa's elite venues and capturing audiences with their sublime and thoughtful sonic approach. Soaring vocals from singer/songwriter Kara Askwith confidently blend with spidery guitar lines courtesy of stellar guitarist Justin Black. The tall talents of Tiff Robson completes the local trio's accomplished lineup.

Completing the lineup for the IFA benefit will be Burnt Reynolds, a country-tinged acoustic duo that features the blistering guitar work of Doug Gouthro, formerly of The John Henry's, and the founder of the Instruments For Africa initiative, Todd Snelgrove.

Instruments For Africa collects musical instruments of all kinds, stands and accessories, sheet music and instructional material to send to Africa.

Our first mission is to fully outfit the Linda School in Livingstone, Zambia with an orchestra of instruments. We are nearing our goal and with a wide variety of instruments coming in we have expanded our scope to equip at least three Zambian schools with our first shipment. Proceeds from the benefit concert will help finance shipping costs.

IFA would like to acknowledge the generous support of RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest and Stella Luna Gelato Cafe.

  5. I'm happy that the following bands will be playing a bike ride away this July:

    B.B. King

    Wu-Tang Clan

    RUSH

    The Tragically Hip

    Weezer

    Grand Funk Railroad

    Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

    Eric Burdon

    Matthew Good

    Mother Mother

    Amadou & Mariam

    Femi Kuti

    Los Lobos

    Justin Townes Earle

  6. They did a pretty good job and still managed to keep the prices down by avoiding the real heavy hitters.

I think they paid attention to their customer feedback.

I'm surprised the Taylor Swift thing didn't come together, and disappointed there's no Pearl Jam.

  7. So I'm thinkin' (hopin') they have some big acts booked, like Pearl jam and Rush, and their management is unwilling to wait two more months to post the dates, so they've forced BF's hand into announcing earlier than usual.

    Permaybe?

Also, fingers crossed that Justin Townes Earle is on the bill.

BF better be pretty sweet this year. Last year several students of mine (we're talking teenagers here) chose to buy Jazzfest passes instead of Bluesfest passes. Depending on Wednesday's announcement the same thing could very well happen again.

  8. Devil's advocate:

"We watched The Kids are Alright at least a dozen times. I had to keep explaining to her it wasn't the same band as before -- they don't smash up their equipment, they're older now and they don't behave like that. She understood that, but there was still a part of her that longed for that kind of performance."

So the kid was hoping for a real balls-to-the-walls rock 'n roll show, and the dad backed it up by allowing her to bring a sign suggesting the band harken back to their anarchistic rock rebellion days.

Just please do it without any naughty language and be sure not to offend anyone.

  9. Benefit Concert, Saturday, March 9th

    3-7pm

    The Ottawa Folklore Centre presents:

    Instruments For Africa benefit concert

Tony D Band, Berekete Afrobeat Band, Burnt Reynolds, more tba

    Saturday, March 9th 3-7pm

Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street, Ottawa

Come out for an afternoon of great music and help support IFA at the same time! Proceeds from the concert will help defray the costs involved in shipping more than 100 musical instruments to needy schools in Zambia.

Ottawa guitar legend Tony D and Adrian Matte's exciting Afrobeat band will be joined by more fantastic local talent for an uplifting afternoon concert in the heart of downtown Ottawa.

IFA would like to acknowledge the generous support of RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest and Stella Luna Gelato Cafe.
