Oh man...next week is reading week and I have an assignment overdue...the prof said he's accept it at the end of the week but I just couldn't get my shit together. Gonna try and fart it out tomorrow and argue that Saturday is actually 'the end of the week'. Ready to party tonight, though; going to check out The Constantines with Jon Rae and the River. Woo hoo!

Done and done, my good man.

Awesome.
I discovered the Lonely Island after seeing the Lazy Sunday clip from SNL. Andy Samberg was one third of this hilarious comedy trio. Apparently the other two were hired to write for SNL shortly after Samberg was added to the cast.
Their site is packed full of hilarious video and audio. I highly recommend both versions of their Awesometown pilots. The first version was cut for Fox and includes a couple lame live-audience sketches. The second one is an edit for MTV and Comedy Central without the live audience stuff, and with a couple different sketches that are quite hilarious. Their overdubbed Nintendo animation is also hilarious, as are both episodes of their ITV Countdown, a TRL parody. My favourite, though, has got to be Kablamo. Watch it. It's Kablamo.

Man, I was at this show and remember it being incredible, but I never had a copy. Just found it yesterday on the archive, and the quality is top-notch!! My goodness, is this a good show. Jimmy is insane, but so is the rest of the band! Even the mandatory leads they throw at the Colonel once in a while aren't too bad. The drummer is on fire, and Bobby Lee Rodgers is doing some crazy shit with a big hollowbody through a Leslie. I remember walking into the show and wondering where the B3 was, because I could swear that I heard it. Turned out to be Rodgers. Anyway, you must all get this show, it's awesome.

There might be a quicker way to do it, but to rip CDs to FLAC, I use EAC to rip to WAV first and then feed the WAVs right into the standard FLAC frontend: http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html
Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, all. I had to cancel on the Sloan gig, my good friend Captain Isaac Klein will assume the throne in my place. The Underground gig is still on though, in a big way! The band sounds great, the tunes are great. There's more of a Band-esque country rock thing happening, great songwriting abound. For all we know this might be our only gig ever, so come on out people. We're on at 8:30.
-
That show was absolutely amazing (one of the best shows that I have ever seen!!)
I agree, they were INCREDIBLE.
-
Can't promise, but might know a couple people looking for a summer sublet in TO.
- Are you guys interested in somebody even if only until September?
- What's the rent?
- Any utility or other expenses?
- How far is the walk to the subway?
- Do you guys smoke cigarettes inside?
- How frequent are the all-night parties that might keep a roomate awake :) ?
- Are y'all veggies? If so, open to non-veggies?
- How big is the room?
Answer me these questions 9 and I'll do my best for ya!
-
Marcus, Booch and Al will be joining me on the air around 8:30 this am. I'm on as we speak, though, so if you're awake, tune on it. 93.3 FM in Hamilton and surrounding, http://cfmu.mcmaster.ca otherwise.

I use Cool Edit Pro and find it extremely easy to use. It has apparently been rebranded as Adobe Audition, but you can still get trial (and cracked, if you're into that) versions all over the place.
-
I don't know about Dan Bakkedahl, but Samantha Bee is from Canada.
Maybe I'm thinking of somebody else then. The story I heard was that one of the new correspondants is Samantha Bee's husband, and it was somebody who joined since September. I don't know if the person in question is now a regular correspondant or if they have only done one or two reports.

Whoa! Actual replies! Thanks y'all.
QQC we talked about St. Kitts for a Red Zeppelin gig, it's next in line if we can squeeze another one in. Needless to say, there will be a spam-esque post to the board from me if anything is booked. Cheers!
-
I think Dan Bakkedahl is originally from Hamilton, if I'm not mistaken.
I haven't had cable for 6 months, is Bob Wiltfong still making Daily Show appearances? He was hilarious.

Here's another tip for Audacity that took me a while to figure out on my own: if you want to apply an effect like reverb to a track, make a copy of the track and apply the effect to the copy, then play both tracks at once, otherwise you just get the effect without the original track and it sounds bad. I usually just use the effects settings that are suggested in wikipedia as it can be frustrating messing with all the dials when all you want is a little reverb or chorus or whatever. The only thing I really don't like about the program is the EQ which is a pain in the ass to use.
I haven't used Audacity, but I would imagine there is a Wet/Dry setting somewhere on the reverb plugin...'wet' is the effect and 'dry' is the raw signal, you should be able to mix between the two.
I'm a former Acid user and I've just graduated to Cubase SX and it's bloody great. It's the same as Acid in that the waveforms you see and work with are only references to the raw WAV files; if you cut a whole piece out, you're not affecting the original track. That's good if, for example, you want to do three completely different dub mixes of one tune. Granted, I haven't even looked at the manual, but I'm pretty sure there is no way to edit a single raw WAV in Cubase, so I've also got Cool Edit Pro for that. Cool Edit has a multitrack view as well, but I prefer the Cubase interface and effects. I recently bought a Presonus Firepod digital interface, it's got 8 internal mic preamps and configured easily with Cubase to allow 8 simultaneous mic ins...I'm putting it to the real test starting tomorrow, when we start the bed tracks for a record I'm producing entirely in my house. I'll let you all know how it goes.
I also work as the Audio Production Coordinator at the campus radio station, and I use Wavelab there. Wavelab is top-notch, with an easy-to-use interface in both single-file and multitrack views. Now I don't know if Wavelab can be set up with a digital interface to record multiple channels at once; at school we've only got a stereo signal going into it.

Hey hey y'all
Following Red Zeppelin's conquest of Toronto's Rancho Relaxo last Saturday night (200 people in attendance, we packed the place), I'm stepping behind the drum kit for a gig this week. If you weren't able to get to Rancho for your fill of loud, sweaty, female-fronted Zeppelin action (who am I kidding, if you're not phishfart420, you didn't make it [nice to meet you by the way, dude]), don't fret: we're currently lining up gigs from now until April which will see us in Toronto twice more, Hamilton once, as well as Guelph and Kingston.
Back to this week though:
Smiling Over Sickness Benefit
Wednesday February 15th
The Underground
41 Catherine St. N., Hamilton
Doors at 7:30, first act at 8
Cover $5, $8 under 19
Smiling Over Sickness (SOS) is a McMaster Student Union club whose mandate is to help sick kids smile.
This event will benefit club GAIN (Gateway to Adult Independence and Networking) - this is a social program run every other friday in East Hamilton for teens and young adults with varying levels of developmental disabilities. It's a great way for these people to interact and develop social skills, or just basically make friends. It's a wonderful program, but doesn't have much funding.
I'm playing with The Surly Young Bucks, a one-shot-deal comprised of:
Max Kerman (Charlemagne) - piano
Mike DeAngelis (Charlemagne) - guitar
Chris Foster - bass
Aaron Goldstein - drums
Also performing:
Robyn Dell'Unto
Dan Griffin
H-bomb
MJ
Members of Set in Stone with Jill
So yeah, if you feel like it, come on out! Thanks.

I caught this Chicago quartet at the Underground last night, friends of mine opened the show. I had seen them in Toronto a few years ago when their first record came out and remember it being a good show, but last night they were considerably better. Yeah, it's pop music, but they write great songs, they can rock it pretty hard, and I heard shades of British stadium rock a la The Who.
In any event, click here to see their hilarious new video, which involves the four of them doing an entire choreographed dance in their backyard. For the encore of the show, they cleared the stage, played the tune through the PA, and did the dance. Real nice chaps too.

Sweet! Thanks Jaimoe.

meh.
this is supposed to be happenning this time of year. the fact that we have had spring-like conditions since new years is really unsettling, and at the moment, nothing makes me happier than seeing the giant honking snowflakes flying around out my window
I hear ya, Tim; it's been unsettling for me too, and I don't mind some snow. It's just the big all-at-once storms and the inclusion of the freezing rain that gets me...especially when I'm due to drive to Toronto later today, back to Hamilton tomorrow around noon, back to Toronto tomorrow night, and then on the bus back to Hamilton Monday afternoon. Balls.

Well it's already raining pretty hard here in the West end of the Hammer...so I consulted the Weather Network to see how long it's supposed to last. At the top of the Hamilton page, there's a link that's not usually there that says "WEATHER WARNING: Rainfall warning for Hamilton". When I clicked it, I was brought to this message:
A DEVELOPING DISTURBANCE OVER SOUTHERN OHIO WILL RAPIDLY DEEPEN INTO AN INTENSE WINTER STORM LATER TODAY. THE CENTRE OF THE STORM IS FORECAST TO REACH LAKE ERIE BY TONIGHT AND THEN PETAWAWA LATE SUNDAY. RAIN WILL SPREAD OVER MUCH OF SOUTHERN ONTARIO EXCEPT COTTAGE COUNTRY TODAY AND INTO THE EASTERN PART OF THE PROVINCE LATE TODAY. SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL AMOUNTS IN THE RANGE OF 20 TO 30 MILLIMETRES ARE EXPECTED ACROSS REGIONS NEIGHBOURING LAKES ERIE AND ONTARIO WITH LOCAL AMOUNTS OF 40 MM POSSIBLE. THIS INCLUDES ALL OF THE GOLDEN HORSESHOE. LESSER AMOUNTS ARE FORECAST FOR FAR EASTERN ONTARIO WHERE THE WINTER STORM WATCH HAS BEEN ENDED. TEMPERATURES WILL BE JUST COLD ENOUGH TO CAUSE THE PRECIPITATION TO BEGIN AS HEAVY WET SNOW OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE DUNDALK HIGHLANDS AND OVER REGIONS TO THE NORTHWEST TO NORTHEAST OF TORONTO. ACCUMULATIONS OF UP TO 5 CM ARE LIKELY BY THIS EVENING IN THIS AREA. AFTER NIGHTFALL..THE RAIN IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE TO HEAVY SNOW NORTH OF A LINE FROM ROUGHLY ST THOMAS TO BRANTFORD TO BRAMPTON TO MINDEN TO NEAR ARNPRIOR. STRONG WINDS OF 30 GUSTING TO 60 KM/H WILL ALSO DEVELOP CREATING EXTENSIVE LOW VISIBILITY LESS THAN 500 METRES IN FALLING..DRIFTING AND BLOWING SNOW. RAIN..HEAVY AT TIMES..WILL PERSIST AROUND NIAGARA AND TORONTO AND EAST. THERE IS A RISK OF A BAND OF FREEZING RAIN EXTENDING BETWEEN THE RAIN AND SNOW WELL NORTH OF LAKE ONTARIO. AS THE STORM HEADS TOWARDS PETAWAWA ON SUNDAY THE BACK END OF THE STORM WILL DELIVER A NASTY WINTERY PUNCH TO ALL OF THE REGION INCLUDING TORONTO. STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS TO 60 KM/H OR MORE WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE SNOW WITH FURTHER APPRECIABLE ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 TO 10 CM WITH BLOWING SNOW LIKELY. TOTAL SNOWFALL IN MANY AFFECTED REGIONS MAY VERY WELL REACH IN EXCESS OF 30 CENTIMETRES BY SUNDAY NIGHT. THIS IS A SERIOUS STORM WHICH IS EXPECTED TO HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT OVER A LARGE PORTION OF THE PROVINCE. ENVIRONMENT CANADA WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR ITS DEVELOPMENT. IN THE LONGER TERM..IN SPITE OF WHAT SOME GROUNDHOGS MAY SAY..IT APPEARS THIS STORM WILL ALTER THE NORTH AMERICAN WEATHER PATTERN SUFFICIENTLY TO INTRODUCE REAL WINTER WEATHER BACK ACROSS THE PROVINCE FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE.Christ on a cracker!

Dude
Vercity are old friends of mine. I wonder if we know each other...anyway I'm the guitarist with the long hair in the Zep band (as opposed to the dude with the short hair). Come introduce yourself!

Right then, so I've done some more recording. Feel free either to comment or let this thread sink like a stone. This is me playing drums, bass and two guitars, and the same disclaimer as always applies: each of these is a first take, and it hasn't been mixed. You'll hear two riffs, I wrote the second. The first one is courtesy of the other guitar player in my band. Please to listen and enjoy, and please not to steal. Thanks.
