  1. Some of you may remember a couple tunes I posted some time last year. I play guitar, bass and drums and was recording a series of riffs in the attic of my old place. It was all analog, with three mics on the kit running through a mixer into the analog line-in of my computer, and bass and guitar amps mic'ed up in similar fashion.

Anyway over the weekend I became the proud new owner of a Presonus Firepod, a firewire audio interface that includes 8 mic pre-amps, so no external mixer is necessary. I've got it all configured with Cubase and it's working like a charm, but haven't had a chance to mic up my drum kit yet to give it a full test run. Instead, I found an old drum track, one of the last ones I did in the attic of my old place. It was meant to be the foundation for a dub, and last night I decided to finish it. It was a real quick job; bass and guitar went straight through the Firepod, so they're real raw. The playing is pretty raw too, I only did one pass each for bass, rhythm guitar and lead guitar. Listening to it now, the lead is pretty overbearing, but I wasn't really taking song structure into account; I just sort of wanked over the whole track. Anyway then I sat and dubwised it a bit using CoolEdit and Cubase. So again, it's pretty raw, but I think it's pretty cool and worth posting. Would love some feedback. It's called Kitchen Dub because my kitchen, being closest to the door to the basement where all the instruments are, is now a full-fledged home studio.

  2. So the bad news is that I'm playing with a Zeppelin tribute these days. But that's the end of the bad news.

The good news is we're fronted by one Joan Smith, a looker of a young lady with a voice that'll knock you off your feet. When she opened her mouth at our first rehearsal, I momentarily forget how to play the guitar.

Our drummer is John Bonham reincarnate. The bass player, other guitar player and I are veterans of the Queen's Players show I played in Novemeber, so we take no prisoners, obviously. We're called Red Zeppelin, and we amount to a quartet of relatively seasoned young musicians playing Zep the way it was meant to be played: with vigour, energy and balls. Top that off with Joan melting your face with her insane vocal stylings, and you're in for an entertaining evening.

This Saturday Feb 4 at Rancho Relaxo is our first gig. The headliners are my friends Vercity, a fantastic prog/grunge trio who are releasing a new disc. We're actually on last, though, around 11 or 11:30. We're set to play 45 minutes, but have a big Zep repetoire already, so we'll keep going if the crowd is there. If you're in Toronto and are looking for some entertainment you don't have to think too much about, drop on by. We've got another Toronto date in the works where we will headline, and we're looking into a Hamilton gig as well. Show details:

  3. That is a beautiful tune. If you've ever read Levon Helm's autobiography This Wheel's On Fire, the prologue details Richard Manuel's funeral in Stratford. Garth Hudson played I Shall Be Released on the church organ and all in attendance sang along.

A short time after reading that I saw Festival Express for the first time, and the film includes an extremely impassioned performance of the song, featuring Richard singing in his trademark falsetto. Just incredible. Thanks for putting that song in my head this morning Esau, I feel today might be a Band day. Hope you're well dude.

  4. Yeah, I'm not embarrassed of that one at all, it's just sort of a random one-off that's in my misc folder. I think I actually have a whole other folder of just Eels. This is another band/project (it's reduced mainly to one guy now, right?) from which I've heard tunes from all different albums and eras but have yet to delve fully into their catalogue. Soon enough...

  5. Sitting here wondering what to listen to during pre-bed computer time, I decided to delve through my Misc mp3 folder and find a bunch of tunes that I'm either embarassed I have or haven't heard in a long time to play for kookycanooky to yank his chain a bit. He's across the house and has already turned up his own music so as to ignore my ridiculousness, so I thought I'd share with the sanctuary. These are some tunes that are on my computer and I must have downloaded at some point, perhaps in the Napster or Kazaa days (which admittedly were still pretty recent), because there was something about the tune that I liked and wanted to hear over and over again. In many cases, the list is not pretty. Here's a sampling:

Annie Lennox - Stand By Your Man

    Brad Paisley - Whiskey Lullaby

    Buckcherry - Cocaine

    Chic - Good Times

    Commodores - Brick House

Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

Dead Eye Dick - New Age Girl

    Dixie Chicks - Goodbye Earl

    Dusty Springfield - Spooky

Eels - Novocaine for the Soul

Elvis Presley - You Were Always on My Mind

    Inner Circle - Bad Boys

Jefferson Starship - We Built This City

    Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine

    Live - The Dolphins Cry

Martina McBride - This One's For the Girls

    No Doubt - Hey Baby

    Pat Boone - Ain't That a Shame

    Rockapella - Gangsta's Paradise

Simple Plan - I'd Do Anything

Vince Gill & Dolly Parton - I Will Always Love You (live)

....rrrrright. A good amount of New Country, that's somewhat unsettling. Anybody else have a good deal of unexplained and/or embarrassing music on their computers or in their possession?

Friday 27th Jan 2006: Band members confirmed for ‘On An Island’ tour David Gilmour has assembled a brilliant band of world renowned musicians, who will join him to play the sell-out 25 date ‘On An Island’ tour. The tour, David’s first since the record-breaking 1994 Pink Floyd Division Bell tour, starts in Europe in March, goes to North America in April and returns to the UK at the end of May. ‘On An Island’, the wonderful new album, is released on 6 March 2006.

The musicians in David Gilmour’s band are:

Phil Manzanera - Roxy Music guitarist and co-producer of ‘On An Island’

Richard Wright - Pink Floyd’s keyboard player

Guy Pratt - bass player with Pink Floyd and Roxy Music

Jon Carin - keyboards and longtime player with Pink Floyd

Steve DiStanislao - drums, recently played with Crosby & Nash

The concert set-list is still to be decided but is likely to combine David’s favourite Pink Floyd tracks with tracks from ‘On An Island’.

Rick Wright, sweet! Jon Carin, even sweeter! He's on the Roger Waters In The Flesh DVD, playing keyboards mainly, but also acoustic guitar and lap steel. Great multi-instrumentalist, great singer too.

  7. From what I saw in Hamilton last night, these guys were awesome. Had to leave a little before 1am on account of the early radio show this morning and all, but they were pretty smokin. The guitar player needs to get over his love affair with his neck pickup, though. He was ripping through some SERIOUS leads, but half of them were lost in the mix because they were all thick and neck-y.

And HOLY SHIT, what a fucking drummer! He's just a little guy, but you should see him move! The musical highlight of the band, in my opinion, though they're all extremely good. Christ on a cracker, go see this band tonight Toronto!
