  1. Really great band. They were voted in as NxNE's fan choice award.

The Country rock Band I have going called The Ragged Bankers opened for them in Guelph 2 weeks ago.

Their live show lived up to the recordings. Great harmonies and a cousin to cousin hand-off of vocal duties on a number of tracks. They covered "If I had a Boat" by Lyle Lovett which I loved.

I recommend checking them out if you are able.

  2. Muslim anger over military 'Jesus' scopes

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Muslim groups reacted angrily Wednesday after it emerged that the US military in Iraq and Afghanistan were using rifle sights inscribed with coded Biblical references.

The company producing the sights, which are also used to train Afghan and Iraqi soldiers under contracts with the US Army and the Marine Corps, said it has inscribed references to the New Testament on the metal casings for over two decades.

The British Ministry of Defense meanwhile announced it had placed an order for 400 of the gunsights with Trijicon but added it had not been aware of the significance of the inscriptions, in a decision criticized by the opposition Liberal Democrat party.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) called on US Defense Secretary Robert Gates to immediately withdraw from combat use equipment found to have inscriptions of Biblical references after it emerged that Trijicon has contracts to supply over 800,000 of the sights to the US military.

The Pentagon sought to defuse the brewing controversy, saying it was "disturbed" by the reports. ...

The headline itself is insane ... [color:purple]Talk about value added reporting! I'm not Muslim and I'm completed fucking irate over this.

This scandal on the heals of the Blackwater independent security force scandal where their leader essentially admitted to engaging in armed conflict in the name of God, is a little unbearable.

  6. It really is interesting to see the extreme degradation that comes from some of those who have belief in a god that deems theirr natural human impulses to be carnal sins.

My father always refers to the hipocrasy he witnessed when pious church goers would step out from under the steeple onto the church lawn and immediately begin gossiping about how unholy the others in the congregation were.

I think this obsessive focus on judgement in the eyes of god prevents some from being able to judge themselves anymore.

It's a twisted paradox that keeps playing out; in varying degrees obviously and though it is only the extreme cases like the one we see here that make the headlines it should not be underestimated how pervasive and acidic this cultural aspect of Belief can be.

  7. I thought the lead singer came off as preachy

I say thank god someone is. Rock and roll is rooted in the preacher to congregation call and response and to me too many jambands have taken this out of the mix opting for an introverted approach that can at times be frustrating. You listen to Phish in interviews for instance and these are sharp individuals who have interesting viewpoints' date=' and sometimes I want to hear from the artists and not just have the abstraction of their music speak for them. Just my .02.

I think preaching and good songwriting are two entirely different things. Both convey a message, both have the potential to impart their little pearls of wisdom, and I suppose both can be powerful. I 'tend' to personally prefer messages that can be interpreted in many different ways, depending on who you are, space, time, etc. Having said that, I also like a hard-hitting song that just lays it on the line (if what is being laid down is something interesting to chew on).

To me The Hold Steady's song "guys go for looks but women go for status" came off as one big cliche, and didn't offer up anything particularly innovative that I hadn't thought about before. I don't think the melody that accompanied that message made up for this in any way. Although I am sure they have better songs if someone wanted to point me towards them. :)

I can't help but feel it's the delivery and not the content that's freaking you out, and my opinion is that this delivery is quite overdue, as I am tiring of the enigma that a lot of the Jambands have created, it's actually pretty prevelant in the indie scene too.

I say, listen I've got a boring job and I'm out on the weekend fill me up with energy and leave your passive nature for the afternoon set that I'll skip at some festival.
