  1. Every time I go to a wedding and it's a close family member or good friend I get them a bottle of Dom Perignon. It's slightly costly but you can get the bottom of the line ones for $100 or so at liquor stores. It makes a pretty good gift because it can be saved and opened later (my cousin saved his for 3 years and he and his wife drank it on new years 2000 and a good buddy of mine saved his for his first anniversary, etc, etc).

  2. If you want to buy a cheap little mp3 player you could hit up a pawn shop and see what they have.

My suggestion is to get one of the really little ones that are basically USB keys that can play mp3's (like these guys). That way, once you buy the true player later you can still use the little guy as a plain USB key which can be quite handy sometimes (like bringing dvd cover art to work to print, etc, etc)

What are you looking to spend on it?

  3. In China it was unreal. The beggars that I saw there were the most deformed humans I have ever seen. One guy had no limbs and just laid there on his stomach with a tin can in front of him and he just kept bobbing his head. I was told that these people are severly taken advantage of and are dropped off and picked up everyday by their "caretaker" and that most of the money does not even go to them. It was very very sad.

Same in Cambodia at the border. The dude with absolutely no limbs was in a basket though. Same thing with the caretakers except the locals I talked to called them "mafia" rather than caretakers and also said they get all the money and just give scraps to the beggars. It was the kids that got me though. Hundreds and hundreds of them swarming and beating each other, missing limbs, etc, etc.

I came away from the whole India experience (and SE Asia to a lesser degree) with the firm belief that NO-ONE in Canada could ever have it so bad, and that NO-ONE here needs to live on the street and beg. We DO have services for these people to access. So when I came back, I was quite "hardened" and for years refused to give any money! (though I would buy coffees on cold days)

I felt the same way on this but what gets me is that we have so many resources here to help the poor but we use it on superflous things.

Here in Ottawa they are building a light rail transit system. It will go downtown following roughly the 95 bus route down Slater I think and will go to quite a few other places but all along the bus route. This is a great thing but hey, we have busses that do the routes already. Why would the thought of the train even pop up in someone's head as a light bulb when there is even one person living on the streets?

Also, my mom works for Community Living and when Harris got hold of Ontario a while back he cut their funding like mad. She said most of the folks that were almost at the point of living independantly (but not quite, they still needed a half way house type thing but were functional enough other than that) were put out on the streets. She told me some numbers that were staggering but I forget them. The moral of the story is that lots of homeless folk aren't there because they got addicted to drugs or had bad childhoods or whatever, they are there because they were born with inferior processing capabilites up top and when put out of their homes, can't build up the skills to get work, etc. I don't explain it well enough and should have numbers, facts, blah, blah, but that's one thing that gets me giving once in a while. If I see someone who looks like they fall into that category I'll give.

  4. hey, it's spring forward right (yes, i get mixed up and also still have to make the L with my hand to get left and right half the time)?

So that means there's an extra hour of bars being open saturday night, wooo hooo (then again, I probably won't go out unless there's something good anyway but wooo hooo for those that are).

  5. Yes, there are tonnes and tonnes of dvd's of bands (video) on thetradersden.org. I'm seeding the three I have right now for probably about another week but I can't go too long. I'm using a laptop for this and it's been running for over a month with just 3 reboots which I don't think is good for it (it's really hot) but fuck it, share the wealth, so grab them now.

PM me with your email and I'll send you the torrent files or, if you're in Ottawa, I'll be at the sisters euclid show and will burn as many as I can for anyone who wants them. I'm still missing 98-04-04 which I won't have by the show but I will (and will seed) later.

PS: Torrents and cover art available here

(You might need to be a member of tradersden to use the torrents)

  6. It's pretty bad when school kids have to be reminded not to bring guns to school.

That's what I was thinking. The way it's worded on there, though, it seems to me like they're saying that guns aren't particularily bad or dangerous, you just aren't allowed to bring them to school (like wearing a shirt that says fuck or something on those lines).

  7. Do you prefer the soft or hard taco?

Both. Soft taco outside with hard taco inside. The layers are seperated by bean paste and the middle has the traditional taco fillings (whatever you might choose to put in there).

  8. Here's a funny story you may have heard from Graz but I'll share with everyone.

I decided a while ago not to give money to homeless folks on the chance that they might waste it. One night I was on my way home and a guy asked me for some change. Thinking I would do a great deed I went and bought him a 12" sub. He was so grateful he threw it on the ground and replied with something on the lines of "I asked for money, not food".

That was the end of the line for me. I still feel bad for folks forced to live outside but I won't give anything either, or not to an individual.

I do, on occaision, reneg on this though. At christmas I gave a random homeless chick $20 and told her to spend it how she wanted. It was really cold outside and she was alone so if she wanted to get baked or drunk, well, it was christmas. This charity does not happen often though (maybe once a year, usually only if I'm drunk).

    hehehe

P.S. I have included an artistic drawing of Him creating a mountain, trees, and a midget. Remember, we are all His creatures.

    I believe it.

    4. Are you an atheist/heathen/etc.?

I don't have a problem with religion. What I have a problem with is religion posing as science. Teach creationism in school, fine, but DON'T teach it in a science classroom. Science = the study of repeatable, observable, natural phenomena. Accepting a supernatural explanation is a cop-out. It's faith, NOT science.

This I agree with whole-heartedly though.

  10. A lot of people eat mcdonalds and shit from those type food chains. They wouldn't even have to change their slogans to use this fake meat. Is there even real meat in the old fast food products (I'm generalizing here, I realize there are some that offer actual meat)? Chicken mcnuggets sure look like chicken but I think the texture is fake (not sure but something tells me).

  11. Though I can never be a mother I wanted to mention that khakis, minivans (not filled with drunken bums or music gear) and suburbs scare the crap out of me. I agree with that little article and hate the stupid sterotypes. Proper and presentable drive me up the wall.

  12. Hello folks,

I'm wondering if anyone on here has the team hood 98-04-04 island tour dvd and feels like seeding it. There are a bunch of us stuck at 63.4% for weeks now and I've been seeding the other three for almost two weeks but can't get this one.

I can't put the exact link to it right now since I'm at work but if you go to www.thetradersden.org and look down the first page to the torrents needing seeding, it's the last show on the fairly short list.

If you do feel like seeding it, let me know and I'll send the folder structure plus the md5 and txt files if needed (the rest are part of the dvd if you only have copies already burnt) as well as the torrent file.

Or, is there someone on here in ottawa that has a copy of the dvd that I could have so I can seed it for the rest of the folks waiting? I'll supply the blanks, that's cool.

Also, I'm brining the three that I have to the sisters euclid this friday for jakis (hopefully I can get the other one before then to finish the set but good things come to those that wait). If anyone else wants them and are going to be at the show, message me. The three I have take 6 dvd's, 8 if I can get my hands on the missing one before then. It's first come, first serve since it will take me a while to burn all this so I may have to say no temporarily.

    Thanks

  13. I love the moving water. At the time it was really an amazing effect. The liquid air was really neat though. My buddies and I always wondered if they could have that for real. I haven't seen this movie in years and years but I've heard folks comment on it several times in the past week which I think is a sign that I must acquire and watch it once more. Thanks for the reminder.

  14. One thing I noticed about that starting was that marge was on the north american side of the car. In the one posted on here a while ago she was on the english side of the car (Homer was on the north american side for both). Then again, I spent the whole day yesterday in quite the daze so I could be wrong on that one but I do remember thinking hey, it's the same car but marge is driving on the other side this time.
