  1. Rock Crew and CFRC present an evening of acoustic solo performers at Elixir on Tuesday, June 7 with Craig Cardiff, Jeremy Fisher & opening act Lesley Pike. Doors open at 8 PM, music starts at 9 PM. Tickets are $8 adv. at Zap Records, Brian's Record Option, Renaissance Music, UBS Exchange, Elixir and online at www.rockcrew.ca

Craig Cardiff - “Singer-songwriter. Prone to fits of edginess and obnoxious honesty. Songs about being barefoot; being full of cancer; about pouring yourself out; being worth love; being the kite that gets caught on the power-lines; being a geek; about driving out February; songs about you. Thank you very much for your ears.

Often accompanied by double bass and drums. Once, in Cleveland, I watched Buddy Guy perform freedom and thought about thirty years, four weeks and five days past the actual date that the song still made sense. Singing songs that need to be sung. Had an epiphany once. Thinks his van can make it all the way to Peggy's Cove, where the land stopped and planes fell to sleep in the water.

Not comfortable writing musical bios and/or resumes. Play accordion, harmonica, guitar and sing. Fairly regularly. Blessed to know so many wonderful musicians who will accompany/tolerate me. Hurled challenge at Walter Ostanek during a drunken rampage at a rare public appearance (the drunken rampage was mine and the rare public appearance his) for a polka-off, which was never recognized. I asked him to wager his Juno. Often found in living rooms and church basements.”

Jeremy Fisher has been on a long road home. Along the way, he has developed his craft by writing songs on his acoustic guitar and working them out in front of live audiences across the country.

With the arrival of Let It Shine, his latest album and first on a major label, Jeremy Fisher has compiled a group of songs that resonate with honesty, humour and self-expression.

Written mostly while on the road touring, Let It Shine is a lyrical illustration of Jeremy’s experiences of the world. “It’s a tip of the hat to my influences,” Jeremy explains “and depicts a snap shot of my life at that time.”

Now based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Jeremy has spent the last four years toting his guitar and belongings on his bicycle as he performed for fans from coast to coast. He recently completed an epic cross-Canada tour on his bicycle, entitled One Less Tourbus, in support of his 2001 independent release, Back Porch Spirituals. He performed over 30 shows, covering 7500km (4600 miles) from Seattle to Halifax on this six-month concert tour. Jeremy partnered with The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) in raising funds for the “Tour Des Femmes,” a sustainable transportation initiative in Ghana, Africa that mobilizes young women with bicycles so they may have greater access to education.

Over the last few years, Jeremy spent part of his time busking on sidewalks, an opportunity which afforded him the prospect to meet many colourful characters, each with their own stories. It was the possibility of opening his heart up to people that he normally wouldn't get a chance to, which Jeremy found so exhilarating. A journey such as this allowed him the time to reflect and analyze his own memories and experiences. Jeremy’s introspection combined with his experiences on tour enabled him to draw upon a wealth of stories for Let It Shine.

In 2003 The Saskatoon Star Phoenix wrote, "This is the type of artist who can translate half a minute of life experience into a profound musical statement. It's almost scary to imagine the effect a few years will have on her." Fast forward nearly two years and Lesley Pike is back, armed with her new full-length record, "Dreaming Back To Life".

Dreaming Back To Life (May, 2005) features nine tracks, all penned by Pike. Recorded largely at Umbrella Sound in Toronto, and mastered by Joao Carvalho, the album features Lesley on Piano and Acoustic Guitar, and her Guelph-based band, Joe Harrison (Bass), Andrew Stuart (Guitar), Phill McFadden (Drums), Cameron Guthrie (Drums, Percussion), as well as guest vocalist Martin Acosta (Stradio) on two of the tracks.

Before heading into the studio to record "Dreaming Back To Life", Lesley spent nearly two years playing shows in support of her 2003 critically acclaimed independent release "Night Visions", which earned her considerable press across Canada and significant play on the CBC. Lesley quickly became known for her talent, charisma and stage presence, earning coveted spots on stage with Pilate, Turn Off The Stars, Stabilo, Butterfly Boucher, The Devlins, Tristan Prettyman, Danny Michel, and Peter Elkas to name a few.

In "Dreaming Back To Life", The Wingham, ON born singer, who holds an honours bachelor degree in Classical Music from WLU, tackles an ambitious range of topics. From the unabashedly honest and uplifting "Rather Be" to the hopeful longing in the title track, the affirmed resignation of "This Fire" and the stark vulnerability of "Mercy", Pike has successfully established and defined her own niche and sound.

"This record is more diverse than the last record, a bit meatier, and overall I hope the outlook is a bit more hopeful", says Pike of her sophomore effort. "On "Night Visions", I basically wrote exactly what I felt without thinking twice about what people would take from it or the impressions they may form. And I really like that in a way, because it's completely honest and raw, but I didn't anticipate the flip side of it - that people might think I'm really quite depressed!" Pike continues, "I remember a neighbour leaving a note in my mailbox after he listened to the record that said something to the effect of "it's really beautiful.and I hope that you are okay'.

This startling realization motivated Pike to better define and articulate exactly what she wanted to convey. "This time around I wanted to be more careful - I wanted the songs to be raw and honest, but also wanted people to see that there's a light at the end of the tunnel."

When it comes to lyrical content, Lesley continues to draw from personal experiences. "This past year seemed to be the year when I all of a sudden had to deal with REAL issues. Death. Change. Disappointment. A sense of loss that I hadn't experienced before. Things you can't just shrug off and you have absolutely no control over", says Pike. "There were times when I thought "I don't know how people do this - how do people survive these kinds of things? And I couldn't quite get my head around it - sometimes I still can't. But those are the times when you are the most human and your relationships become that much stronger and you feel closer to everything and more alive. I wanted the songs to capture some of that."

Of course, for any female in her mid-twenties, there will always be a thread of romance and heartache, and much of Lesley's writing is still fuelled by the ongoing highs and lows of romantic relationships. In "This Fire" she sings "Is it me, could I be blind? / You'll say I walked into this fire with my eyes open wide / so save your remorse, and I will not complain." Pike readily admits the song is, at least initially, "about a boy", but she continues, "I wrote it in a way that it would apply to other areas of my life. Not shying away from pain. Taking on challenges. Taking responsibility. Not always looking back and worrying about the "why", but instead looking forward at how to make things better in the future". It seems she has found a new maturity in her writing and in her perspective, a willingness to embrace the experiences that life brings. "This song is kind of like my 'fine, these things happen and I'm definitely going to share the blame, but I'm also going to take everything I can from this experience to learn and grow as best I can, and I'm going to be a better person because of it', where in the past it may have been a bit more "I liked you, you liked me, it didn't work, I'm bitter, this sucks".

The title track, "Dreaming Back To Life" captures that terrifying yet exhilarating feeling you get when you put yourself completely out there and lay everything on the line with absolutely no assurance about how everything is going to turn out. Says Pike, "If I can encourage or inspire that kind of feeling in people when they listen to my record it will be a huge success for me - I'd love to be able to have a hand in helping people revisit or unlock their own dreams."

  2. Yeah they were supposed to hit the Trash in Peterborough on June 10th.. Now they are in Waterloo that ngiht. Somehow the show in Ptbo fell through, which is a major upset for me!

Jon Hall from the Trash had this to say: "Its a long story."

The original dates includes Kingston and Peterborough, and no Montreal. Then he decided he only wanted to do 4 Canadian dates instead of 5. So Ptbo got canned and Kingston got moved. Then he decided he HAD to play Montreal, so Kingston got canned. These were all CONFIRMED and ANNOUNCED shows. I'm quite thoroughly displeased with him.

  3. Rock Crew and Elixir present the Something To Prove Tour featuring Inspectah Deck, Afu-Ra & Planet Asia this Thursday, June 2. Tickets are $12 at Zap Records, Brian's Record Option, Renaissance Music, UBS Exchange, Elixir and on-line at www.rockcrew.ca

As a member of one of the most significant musical collectives in recent history, Inspectah Deck of the Wu-Tang Clan has never fallen victim to the ill powers that be. Inspectah Deck was one of the featured rappers on many of the Wu Tang Clan’s major hits like: "Triumph," "C.R.E.A.M.", "Pinky Ring" and more. And just like any gracious minded veteran, the Staten Island raised MC is primed to supply the street’s demand for real live hip-hop.

“The music I grew up with educated you. I’m trying to take it back to when you got respected on the weight of your thoughts and character and not your material possessions” – Inspectah Deck.

From his 1994 breakout on Jeru the Damaja's "Mental Stamina," Afu-Ra has fused classic East Coast hardcore with the sensitive, intelligent wordplay expected from a committed Rastafarian. Afu became a protégé of Jeru The Damaja (just as Jeru had come up with Gang Starr), and appeared on the second Jeru album (Wrath of the Math) but moved out on his own for the 1998 single "Whirlwind Thru Cities," an underground favorite. Body of the Life Force, his debut album, appeared in 2000, boasting features for GZA and Cocoa Brovaz. Afu-Ra hooked back up with Gang Starr's DJ Premier for 2002's Life Force Radio. Afu’s new album will be in stores this June and features appearances by Royce Da 5’9, Masta Killa of Wu Tang, Gentleman & Kardinal Offishall.

Planet Asia is well known throughout the hip-hop community as one half of the duo Cali Agents and has been tearing up the airwaves & stages around the world. The Source Magazine named him a “First Round Draft Pick” and gave him “Independent Album of the Year” for “How the West Was One” in 2000 and was nominated for a 2002 Grammy award with Mystic for the track “W.” Asia has been featured on albums by Lincoln Park, The Roots, BT, Talib Kweli & Ghost Face Killa of Wu Tang

  4. Well in this case I do, because I genuinely respect both Trey and Kevin... Truth be told, Trey would only open for bands like DMB now, and unless Kevin can guarantee a room full of 14 year old girls for Trey after the show, I just don't see Trey opening for the Sisters... :P

14 yr old girls seems more a Mike thing ... if cameras were involved

  5. my guess is an 'unforeseen' conflict between trey's camp and ben's camp. Not necessarily Trey and Ben themselves, but maybe management or lawyers or something.

That's it for my clever insight, which is not based on anything but my funny little head

  6. Rock Crew Productions, Elixir Nightclub (14 Garrett Street) and CFRC are very proud to present Alpha Ya Ya Diallo on Thursday, May 26. Doors open at 8 PM, this is a 19+ event. Advance tickets are $10 and on sale now at Brian’s Record Option, Zap Records, UBS Exchange, Renaissance Music, Elixir, or through Rock Crew On-line Ticketing (http://www.rockcrew.ca/onlineticketing.shtml'>http://www.rockcrew.ca/onlineticketing.shtml)

Guitarist and singer Alpha Ya Ya Diallo, from Guinea in West Africa, is one of the hottest acts on the current world music scene. Now based in Vancouver, Canada, he's earned a matchless reputation internationally for the excellence of his musicianship and the excitement of his live shows - whether performing solo or with his band Bafing. Diallo is a uniquely multi-talented artist. His dexterous acoustic and electric guitar-playing, with its fluid melodic lines and compelling grooves, places him in the front ranks of African axemen. In addition he is a skilled and experienced performer on a variety of percussion instruments, and on the balafon (traditional wooden xylphone). To complete the abundance of riches Diallo writes his own compositions, and sings with a supple and beautifully modulated voice.

Diallo is increasingly recognized as one of Canada's leading music performers in any genre. In the summer of 2003 he played a series of high-profile European festivals as part of the Canada Council-sponsored Sonic Wave tour. And in February 2004 he was a member of the hugely successful African Guitar Summit concert at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto - with Pa Joe, Mighty Popo, Madagascar Slim, Adam Solomon, and Donne? Robert. The African Guitar Summit CD has just been nominated for a JUNO.

On his latest album Djama, which means 'The People' in Fulah, Diallo has taken his art to new heights, with the intricacy and precision of his guitar playing and his soulful singing. The recording features several superb duets with fellow guitarist Karamoko Kouyate? from Mali's legendary Rail Band.

Diallo's musical inheritance is something he always wants to nurture and to build upon. He never strays far from these roots, while at the same time ensuring that his performances and his albums make use of the very latest advances in music technology.

Alpha Ya Ya Diallo is one of the most inspired and inspirational artists on the World Beat circuit today.

  9. Rock Crew Productions and Elixir Nightclub (14 Garrett St.) are very proud to present a benefit concert for the Justin Schwieg Foundation, featuring Grand Theft Bus, Dr. Jelly, and SuperCell on Thursday, May 12th. Doors open at 9 PM for this 19+ event. Advance tickets are $10 and on sale Friday, April 29 at Brian's Record Option, Zap Records, UBS Exchange, Renaissance Music, Elixir, or through Rock Crew On-line Ticketing (http://www.rockcrew.ca/onlineticketing.shtml)

Dr. Jelly will present a follow up benefit concert for the Justin Schwieg Foundation, featuring Last Limit Freedom, SquidPistol, and The Method at the Scherzo Pub, 207 Wellington St. on Friday, May 13th. Doors open at 9pm. Tickets at the door are $7.

The spirit and intensity of slain local football hero Justin Schwieg will live on in the form of a foundation to support amateur football in Kingston. "Justin's love for the game of football was demonstrated by his dedication to the game as a coach, player, and fan. The Justin Schwieg Foundation will make it possible for more young athletes to learn the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and intensity that Justin embodied," said Jason Schwieg, Justin's brother.

Justin Schwieg was murdered March 25th in an unprovoked attack while on a night out with his friends. "The support for Justin's family and friends that came from the Kingston football community was astounding. Justin would have given years and years of his legendary intensity and passion to the game if he had lived. The Justin Schwieg Foundation will ensure that even though Justin's days as a player and coach are over, his spirit will continue to support the game he loved," said Nick Corneil, a teammate and roommate of Justin's.

Proceeds from the events will be donated directly to the Foundation to provide it with seed funding. Steve Sottile of Kingston-based band Dr. Jelly expressed his desire for participation from the wider community. "We're asking local organizations, businesses, and individuals to contribute to the Justin Schwieg Foundation by pledging to match 10, 25, 50, or 100 percent of the funds raised by local musicians through these concerts," said Sottile.

Hailing from Southern New Brunswick, Grand Theft Bus has garnered a reputation as one of Canada’s most exciting new bands. Although known for their sprawling exploratory live performances, the group’s first studio effort Birth of Confusion was extremely well received by both critics and fans alike. Their second release, Flies in the No Fly, is currently available on the Maple Music label. Having played over 400 shows in the past two years, they have shared the stage with legendary acts such as the Rheostatics and the New Deal, performed to packed houses in every major Canadian City, and become a mainstay on the summer festival circuit.

Dr. Jelly blends funk, rock, jazz and reggae into a unique, danceable groove. Based in Kingston, Dr. Jelly has built a great community of friends and fans with diverse musical tastes and the common urge to have a good time exploring them. Their shows combine cover tunes, innovative arrangements, mash ups of new and old classics, and an injection of fresh original material. Dr. Jelly has fun on stage and strives to involve the audience in a truly interactive live music experience.
