  1. Rock Crew and CFRC present Final Fantasy and Dandi Wind, with special guest Laconnor (feat. Jesse Zubot), this Thursday at Elixir! Tickets are $6 at Zap Records, Brian's Record Option, Renaissance Music, UBS Exchange, Elixir and online at www.rockcrew.ca

    1. Final Fantasy is the music that is produced when Owen Pallett (also a member of The Arcade Fire and The Hidden Cameras) plugs his violin into a looping pedal.

    2. Final Fantasy songs are all about ghosts, romance, cooking, fantasy fiction and guilt.

    3. Final Fantasy - the band - is named in humble tribute to Final Fantasy - the game. Lawsuits have not yet arisen, but when they do, you'll be the first to know. Final Fantasy, to us, is a great amalgam of capitalism, swords, melodrama and Japan.

    4. "Final Fantasy" is far more suitable than "Owen Pallett" because "Owen Pallett" is a Welsh-y name that suggests leeks, projects and 'I'm the only gay in Aberfynn-Weldy.' So Final Fantasy it is.

    5. Final Fantasy has two members. Leon Taheny is the other one, he does engineering and drumming. There are other people as well who you might meet

"Dandi Wind is the work of two very dedicated pioneers, who are bending the rules and embracing not only music, but art as well. Dandi Wind are changing the way people should view music– –that’s right, I said view music. Sometimes there are albums that give you a visual experience as you listen to it, and that’s what Bait the Traps does. Thick synthesized beats sit atop even more artificial instrumentation that is fitted to a rough vocal delivery that makes your hips shake. Instantly, Dandi Wind wants to persuade you to dance, they want you to get off your ass and move: not just hear the music, but feel it and see it. Dandi Wind’s debut is a wonderful step in an artistic direction, blending music and performance art into one beautiful listening experience."

  3. Rock Crew Productions and CFRC are very proud to present Julie Doiron with special guest Snailhouse at The Grad Club on Saturday, June 25. Advance tickets are $8 and on sale now at Brian’s Record Option, Zap Records, UBS Exchange, Renaissance Music, Elixir, or online at www.rockcrew.ca

After a whirlwind winter that had Julie Doiron (ex-Eric's Trip, The Wooden Stars, Gord Downie) heading to Spain to play with Herman Dune, recording a music video and packing a sold-out show at Juno Fest with friends Leslie Feist and Ken Beattie from Radiogram, Julie is heading to Ontario and Quebec to play shows with her friends in Snailhouse. The tour kicks off in Ottawa on Friday, June 17 at the Saw Gallery and wraps up on Monday, June 27 in Montreal at Sal Rosa. Sunday, June 26 at Wavelength in Toronto will be the official CD release for Snailhouse’s newest record The Silence Show. The Snailhouse portion of the shows will feature new and old songs and will be peppered with guest vocals from Julie. Mike Feuerstack has also informed us that he intends to sing and play with Julie too, whether she appreciates it or not.

What the press has said about Goodnight Nobody: "Fellow Canadian songwriter Leonard Cohen once titled an album Songs From a Room. Montreal-based Julie Doiron apparently took up residence there and removed whatever furniture was left behind." Rolling Stone

“It seems that Julie Doiron is becoming more comfortable with the idea of feeling uncomfortable, allowing her songs to really open themselves up to the listener and defining the idea of wearing your heart on your sleeve.” Chart .

  5. CFRC and Rock Crew present Weakerthans frontman John K. Samson and fellow Winnipeger Christine Fellows at The Grad Club in Kingston on Friday, June 24. Advance tickets are $10 at Zap Records, Brian's Record Option, Renaissance Music, UBS Exchange, The Grad Club and online at www.rockcrew.ca

John K. Samson is a Canadian singer-songwriter. He is the frontman of The Weakerthans and a former member of Propaghandi.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Samson is also a founding member of Arbeiter Ring Publishing, a Winnipeg, Manitoba publishing collective. Samson is active in the Winnipeg arts scene, collaborating on projects with notable artists such as Christine Fellows and Clive Holden.

Christine Fellows lives in Winnipeg. She writes stories, punches them full of holes, fashions them into songs using anything she finds lying around, scrapes them clean, and delivers them to us in a voice that is at once immediate and utterly original. Her work has often been described as filmic and sparse, carefully crafted "handmade folk" that would be as fitting performed in an orchestral setting as it would be on a rickety back porch. Her albums feature inventive arrangements for strings, piano, percussion, field recordings, loops and samples.

An integral part of Winnipeg's vibrant arts community, Fellows is an avid collaborator, and she has been commissioned to compose for dance (Trip Dance Company, Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers, and Toronto's Dancemakers), television (CBC Television's Landed), radio (CBC Radio One's Seven Deadly Sins and All for a Song), spoken word and film (Trains of Winnipeg CD + film). She is currently working on a project to compose for solo cello and pre-recorded sound with her long-time collaborator, Leanne Zacharias.

Fellows' live performances have been hailed as "jaw-dropping." She has performed at SXSW festival in Austin, TX, Calgary and Winnipeg Folk Festivals, Hillside Festival, Ottawa Folk Festival, Halifax Pop Explosion and the Frostbite Festival in Whitehorse, Yukon. She has shared the stage with The Weakerthans, Veda Hille, Carolyn Mark, The Handsome Family, Joel Plaskett, Feist, Martin Tielli, the Waifs and the Rheostatics.

Christine Fellows has released two critically acclaimed solo albums in Canada: 2 LITTLE BIRDS CD (2000), and THE LAST ONE STANDING CD (Six Shooter Records 2002). Her third, PAPER ANNIVERSARY CD, will be released in Canada on June 7th, 2005 on Six Shooter Records (distributed by Warner Music). Both THE LAST ONE STANDING and PAPER ANNIVERSARY will be released on Six Shooter Records in Europe in 2005.

  7. Slaves Of Spanky is opening the Sweatshop Union show too

    www.slavesofspanky.com

Slaves of Spanky are Kingston’s velcro shoe-wearing, shit-hot RAP jam superstars. MCs BJ King and Cap't Footbags wear fresh helmets and bust forth with lightnin' hot RAPS while the funk is brought by Suganutz Walker (Rhodes, synth, Alphabet desk), Speedgrease Perlin (electric upright bass) and Fuzzy Hefner (drums/loops). The beats and grooves from the band keep the rumps shaking vigorously, but it's the MCs in the spotlight with a high-energy and goddamn hilarious performance that never ceases to be anything short of incomparably fun. Check out the pork-chop bling action and the rocking synchronized leg lifts in mid rap.

BJ and Footbags started the SOS Crew as two rappers and a drum machine in the small but sexy town of Tamworth, Ontario in 1996. Realizing that digital gadgets (especially watches and computers) were on the way out, SOS became a live band, bringing in a local jazz/funk trio (Walker, Perlin, Fuzzy) to supply the hot RAP rhythms. Now, it’s two MCs and a backing band of schooled funkateers fuelled on cheeseburgers and donuts, and Slaves of Spanky have become fresher than TV's McGyver at the peak of his short and lucrative career. DAMN.

Currently based in Kingston Ontario, Slaves of Spanky are RAPPIN' and crap-talking their way into the hearts of millions, filling clubs across Eastern Ontario and opening for such acts as Sum 41, Pocket Dwellers, Choclair, Sweatshop Union and Grand Buffet. SOS are currently recording their second full length album, due out in September 2005, and will be touring Canada in a hovercraft. Or Minivan.

  8. TRICKY WOO IS COMING BACK!!!!!

It's this Friday, June 17 at Clark Hall Pub. No student ID or sign-in required for 19+, 18 and under must be Queen's students

Tickets are only $6 at Zap Records, Brian's Record Option, UBS Exchange, Renaissance Music, Clark Hall Pub, or online at www.rockcrew.ca

Montreal’s ambassadors of bombast, Tricky Woo, are widely acknowledged as groundbreaking heroes of rock and roll’s newest generation. With four full-length albums under their belts and a reputation as one of the world’s most incendiary live acts, Tricky Woo have traveled from here to Timbuk2 to spread their love-filled message of pure, unadulterated, total guitar warfare.

Nominated for a Juno Award in the "Best Alternative Album" category for their 1999 genre_defining hard rock masterpiece "Sometimes I Cry", Tricky Woo have also seen several of their songs appear on heavyweight American television shows like Dawson's Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The band went on hiatus in early 2002 after touring intensively behind their chart-topping college radio smash album "Les Sables Magiques". In the brief time that they were away, the band received more accolades and words of reverence from music fans around the world than it ever had while it was active.

Words like "legendary", "seminal" and "maddeningly ahead of their time" are thrown around like rice at a wedding when mention of the band is made. Heeding the call, Tricky Woo have regrouped and are poised to re-invent popular music, yet again, with their up-coming 5th full-length release. This latest installment in the Tricky Woo discography promises to be the band’s penultimate expression of paint-peeling, mind-shattering guitar rock.

Featuring original members Andrew Dickson on vocals and lead guitar, Adrian Popovich on lead guitar, Alex Barbeau on bass and new addition Patrick Sayers on drums, “The Woo” is most definitely on top.

The Ride Theory plays rock n' roll music. Our appreciation for the sound and feel of early rock n' roll evolved into a lifestyle in the summer of 2002. Aron D'Alesio (singer/guitarist) and Noah Fralick (drummer) had been experimenting musically, in the depths of a Canadian basement. Soon a crude, yet undeniably authentic, rock n' roll sound was concocted. The sound developed with the additions of guitarist, Kyle Kuchmey and bassist, John Smith. All members being well-schooled in the roots of rock n’ roll, we naturally draw musical inspiration from the analog masterpieces in surf rock, soul, art rock, garage and beat rock. We nurture a sense of duty to evoke excitement from our audiences. Our stage presence is energetic and enthusiastic. We provide a visual spectacle that captures our audiences’ attention; we maintain their interest with intriguing, danceable songs.

Our sound gained immediate local acclaim; efforts to expand our audience soon followed. The Ride Theory has shared the stage with a number of distinguished performers including The Arcade Fire, The Rheostatics, Billy Talent, The Sadies, Division of Laura Lee, By Divine Right, Burning Brides, The Flashing Lights, The Joel Plaskett Emergency, and The Organ.

  10. This Thursday, June 16, at Elixir!

Tickets $8 advance at Zap Records, Brian's Record Option, UBS Exchange, Renaissance Music, Elixir and online at www.rockcrew.ca

In a world full of one-dimensional 'popular' music, it is rare to find a musical act with such diverse styles and talents as the POCKET DWELLERS. This eight-piece outfit is a multi-talented, multi-instrumental and multi-influenced collective. Musicians, ranging from classically or jazz trained, to street-smart and self-taught, the POCKET DWELLERS bring their diverse talents together to create a whole new sound that is anything but conventional. The line-up includes guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, a cadre of horns, a couple of turntables, a hip-hop M.C. and a wallop of energy! The POCKET DWELLERS meld all of these colours into one unique and powerful sound. Funk, soul, hip-hop, rock, jazz, drum & bass--all representing the sound of today's streets, these styles of music are blended to create the sound of the POCKET DWELLERS.

Sweatshop Union is not just a hip hop group with diverse vocal styles and crisp, soulful beats - they are the breath of fresh air that hip hop fans have been waiting for. Originally operating as four independent units (Kyprios, Dirty Circus, Creative Minds, and Innocent Bystanders), the Sweatshop Union Collective came together to offer an alternative to the seemingly repetitive, negative-natured released of rap music.

Sweatshop Union released their highly anticipated sophomore album 'Natural Progression' on Battleaxe/EMI Records in February 2004. Natural Progression cements Sweatshop Union as hip hop's provocative story tellers of the urban working class struggle. Sweatshop Union offer up their signature blend of melodic beats, live instrumentation and above all, powerfully political lyrics. Addressing the sometimes-harsh realities of the world from a unique perspective, Sweatshop Union encourage their listeners to realize that they have a choice.

  11. Rock Crew Productions and Elixir Nightclub (14 Garrett Street) are very proud to present Hurst with special guests Idle Sons and Cherry Bomb on Thursday, June 9. Doors open at 9 PM, this is a 19+ event. Cover is $8 at the door or through Rock Crew On-line Ticketing (http://www.rockcrew.ca/onlineticketing.shtml)

    Trevor Hurst has gone organic.

If you were familiar with industrial rock pop of Econoline Crush and its highly acclaimed albums Affliction, The Devil You Know or Brand New History, you would have been bombarded with technical gadgetry up the yin-yang before your ears even had the chance to register what they were hearing.

That's why Wanderlust, Hurst's first post-Econoline seven-song EP, carries a disclaimer: No sequencers or samplers were injured during the making of this record.

    Why? Because there are none.

"I really wanted to get away from the sequencers," declares Hurst, the Winnipeg-based brains behind this four-man operation. "I really wanted it to be right back to basics. I wanted it to be fluid, to get back to my rock roots and a classic, yet fresh sound. I wanted to go natural.”

Wanderlust is the mindset of re-assessment from which the EP hails. Trevor admits that the initial catalyst that sent him down this path was the uncertainty of our times. An increase of senselessly violent acts and the realization that life is fragile prompted him to give up a comfortable Los Angeles lifestyle for his teenage home of Winnipeg and reconnect with his family and friends.

"After traveling the planet, oddly this is where I feel most comfortable - even with the God forsaken winters and bug-ridden summers," he laughs.

"I was at the point where I wondered if being a rock musician seemed trivial. That started me on this analytical spin, this path of discovery and exploration. It was a personality I wanted to explore that didn't involve hooking up to a machine."

So it was goodbye industrial rock and darker themes, hello warmer sounds and a sense of optimism.

Co-produced by Hurst and former Collective Soul guitarist Ross Childress, Wanderlust is the first step of that reassessment, seven sparkling songs designed to introduce Econo fans and any other admirers of Hurst's potent melodies to the next chapter in his life.
