  1. Thursday, August 4 at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto (370 Queen Street West) it's Slaves of Spanky (Kingston) with Ruthie Lamb, Crack Puppy, and Roscoe Project. Cover is $4, or you can email us (chris @ rockcrew . ca) and get on the guestlist!

Slaves of Spanky are Kingston’s velcro shoe-wearing, shit-hot RAP jam superstars. MCs BJ King and Cap't Footbags wear fresh helmets and bust forth with lightnin' hot RAPS while the funk is brought by Suganutz (Rhodes, synth, Alphabet desk), Speedgrease (electric upright bass) and Fuzzy Hefner (drums/loops). The beats and grooves from the band keep the rumps shaking vigorously, but it's the MCs in the spotlight with a high-energy and goddamn hilarious performance that never ceases to be anything short of incomparably fun. Check out the pork-chop bling action and the rocking synchronized leg lifts in mid rap.

BJ and Footbags started the SOS Crew as two rappers and a drum machine in the small but sexy town of Tamworth, Ontario in 1996. Realizing that digital gadgets (especially watches and computers) were on the way out, SOS became a live band, bringing in a local jazz/funk trio (Walker, Perlin, Fuzzy) to supply the hot RAP rhythms. Now, it’s two MCs and a backing band of schooled funkateers fuelled on cheeseburgers and donuts, and Slaves of Spanky have become fresher than TV's McGyver at the peak of his short and lucrative career. DAMN.

Currently based in Kingston Ontario, Slaves of Spanky are RAPPIN' and crap-talking their way into the hearts of millions, filling clubs across Eastern Ontario and opening for such acts as Sum 41, Pocket Dwellers, Choclair, Sweatshop Union and Grand Buffet. SOS are currently recording their second full length album, due out in September 2005, and will be touring Canada in a hovercraft. Or Minivan.

Ottawa’s Jesus Mullet formed in February 2001 when Belleville, Ontario natives Jay Chapman (guitar, vocals) and Mark McGee (drums) decided to start a rock and roll band that did not require gimmicks to attract people, but just timeless, all original rock music. They acquired a friend who normally played guitar to play bass for the band in March 2001. In June 2001 the original line-up recorded a 10 song demo of instrumental tracks in a friends basement entitled "The Low Budget LP". The band played shows around their hometown until November 2001 when they found themselves looking for a new bass player.

Andrew Rashotte filled in on some shows to help the band out and a couple of months later joined the band full time.

Since then Jesus Mullet has been playing shows throughout Ontario. The band has recorded three separate demos including "Bravo Whiskey Niner" recorded in January 2002 at Studio 440 in Belleville Ontario, a three track demo in August 2002 in Trenton and another three track demo in May 2003 at Poppa D's in Trenton. All demos were recorded by Jeff Vandertogt and Sean Doyle. The band plans to continue to record and tour in the future, and will always be devoted to playing rock and roll which is free of trends and other garbage that so many bands have fallen victim to. Jesus Mullet will always stay true to themselves and their fans past, present and future.

  7. Rock Crew Productions and CFRC are very proud to present The Old Soul with special guests Pelt and Ass Machine at Clark Hall Pub this Friday, July 8. Doors open at 9 PM, this is a 19+/all ages event. Queen’s student ID is required for 18 and under. Cover is $6 at the door or online at www.rockcrew.ca

Led by former White Star Line frontman Luca Maoloni and featuring several veterans of the Toronto indie-rock scene, The Old Soul is an orchestral, ambitious pop outfit that recalls the classic late-sixties and early seventies work of The Beach Boys and Harry Nilsson as well as the more modern grandeur of The Flaming Lips. However, the band has a reckless sense of celebration, fun and catchy melody that is all its own. They are here for the party, people.

A gifted multi-instrumentalist, Maoloni recorded much of the album alone at London’s House of Miracles with Andy Magoffin (Constantines, Royal City et al.) Along the way he picked up players from compadre-bands More Plastic, Wild Honey and The Dirty Hearts to help with the recording and form the live band that would bring the songs to clubs, bars, barns, weddings and barmitzvahs.

Currently, The Old soul consists of Maoloni’s former WSL bandmate Jay Anderson on the drums and Wild Honey’s Matt MacLaren on bass and additional keyboards. More Plastic’s Juri Biondic plays saxophone, whistles, sings backing vocals and hits the all-important cowbell, while Dirty Hearts guitarist, Lenin i Shumov bassist and former Blackeyes frontman Nick Taylor plays guitar and sings harmony. Maoloni came up with ‘The Old Soul’ moniker, an appropriate one for a band made up of music-store clerks and music history aficionados.

Since finishing the album, the band played the 2004 PopMontreal Festival in October, toured with Elevator, and performed release parties around Ontario including their grand official record launch at The Rivoli in Toronto. The five-piece band is often joined by “The Andrews,” a support cast of between one and four guys called Andrew playing trumpets, timpanis, voices and other instruments that add to the celebratory, intoxicating, party-atmosphere of the shows. The band has recently returned to The House of Miracles to begin work on a follow-up album.

Together since 1998, Ass Machine has a sound that keeps changing and evolving. Originally a 4 piece armed with angry songs, offensive lyrics and a wall of guitars, they are now a pop trio, less angry, but no less intense and when they hit the stage, they are there to put on a show. Ass Machine 3rd full length album is being mastered this summer for a fall release.
