  1. Yeh well they just expanded the main side so I'm not sure what the story there is. They've got a tonne of yuppie room as it is. (I suppose I shouldn't talk, I've spent plenty of time on the pub side as well arguing politics and drinking craft beer.)

  2. I just dropped a line to Crispin, the sound guy/booker, to see if I could find out more.

Coincidentally, I was going down there anyway after work to meet someone, so I'm gonna scope this out and find out if there's anything that could be done (a petition or such) to keep the music alive there.

  3. I read in the Star this morning that C'est What will no longer have live music after August 21st!!! It has something to do with a raise in the rent. This is terrible, C'est What is the best small room in the city, if not the best all 'round.

Musicface no like, bad medicine. ::

  4. Blues Traveler have been added to moedown

Thanks NR, yeh BradM tipped me off to that as well and it was on bluestraveler.net as well which I check pretty regularly (kept hoping they'd be added to 'roo but no dice - still hoping Popper will show up and jams like last year at least.) I'll have to see how things play out for moe.down, I'm in a wedding the week before in BC and I'm not totally sure when I'll be back, or for that matter how much it's gonna set me back. Tempting thou.

  5. Blues Traveler played the London Blues Fest 2 summers ago. i got to watch for free from a perfectly cut-out hole in the fence. great show.

Actually you're right, I forgot about that show and that was after 9/11. I was there, good set although I usually find they're better in a club or hall than outside for some reason. They did the Ottawa Bluesfest the year before that (just before 9/11), but those are the only times they've been back to Ontario in years. And they haven't played Toronto since '98! :(

  6. Well I really wish Keller would play up here... Now, he is actually opening for DMB this summer, but that's no good. I wish we could figure out a way to make it him play a full show after DMB. The El Mocambo would work nicely!

{sigh} Actually CH, I had the same idea when I heard about Keller opening for DMB that he could fit in a show either that night or the night after in his schedule (I checked his online listings), and I was thinking him with my buddy Matt Osborne opening would make an amazing bill, and it would be great exposure for Matt. I even dropped an email to Keller's booker (didn't get back to me but I didn't think they would on first contact). I was gonna follow up the next week by phone, but then that turned out to be the weekend that Matt passed away and I lost the heart for the idea. But I do think it could have worked really well, the El Mo or somewhere like Silver Dollar or Hugh's Room would work great for a Keller show.

I'm still pissed that Blues Traveler haven't been up here since 9/11. Anybody else noticed a greater drop off in acts coming across the border since then? I'm not sure if it's just my imagination.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  7. I understand where you're coming from, but it's one thing when underproduction adds energy 'cus something fresh and creative is being captured (The Basement Tapes are indeed a great example) but not when what you're capturing sounds like goofing around rather than going for it, which is how Round Room strikes me.

I'm not gonna argue that Farmhouse isn't overproduced thou, I'll give you that. I think I'd rate it ahead of Round Room only on the basis of the songs which I happen to like a bit more, but I don't think it's one of their strongest ones either.

And as far as "disowning the entire 2112 series", I'm not even quite sure what you mean. It's not a series, it just one song (it does have 7 distinct parts thou - is that what you mean?)

And screw disowning it anyway! 2112 fuggin' ROCKS, BABY! Now everybody shake your fist in the air and yell [color:"red"]WE ARE THE PRIESTS OF THE TEMPLES OF SYRINX!!! with me.

Do it now, don't make Bubbles mad.

  8. Also I read he skewed the results of his "experiment" by practically doing little exercise. In the same article I read the person critisizing the movie did her own mcdonalds experiment where she actually exersised and lost weight.

Like ahess I don't want to spoil the movie, but I'd like to say that that was actually part of the point he was making - he was trying to emulate the amount of activity average Americans (who by and large don't work out) get. So the "skewing" was actually part of the experiment - he was trying to see how unhealthy the whole eat-crap-and-sit-around lifestyle really was, not necessarily just the food.

I'd recommend this movie very highly, it was an amazing combination of hilarious and disturbing. Very much in the Michael Moore school as far as trying to use shock-value and humour to get a serious point across.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  9. In terms of material, Farmhouse isn't bad (if you get rid of Guyute, anyway). But it sounds terrible to listen to, just like Hoist sounds terrible, even though the material's not so bad. Someone has to keep Trey away from the producer's chair.

Fair enough, but are you really saying the production on Round Room is stellar? There's certainly not much deft editing going on there, and I could set up a couple of ADATs in my basement and get the same audio quality. I do think many of the songs on Round Room came into their own live, but the album still sounds like a bunch of rehearsal tapes to me.

And BTW it is true that Rush fans have a more highly evolved taste than you mere morals, so thanks for that clarification Hamilton. :: ;)

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  10. Round Room

    You are insane, Booche.

    I vote Farmhouse.

Hamilton, you voted off Farmhouse over Round Room and Booche [color:"red"]* is the insane one?!?

In difference to my usual trend-bucking ways, I'm saying see ya Siket.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

[color:"red"]* [color:"#666666"] for the record, Booche IMHO is indeed insane, but not for disliking Round Room

  11. Hee-hee, 'twas indeed! First time out with Uncle Seth as an electric 4-piece with yours truly on bass and Craig on drums instead. Craig luckily is actually probably an even better drummer than he is a bass player, so no worries there. For me, while I'd never played a full Seth-set on bass before it's something I've been doing on and off for years since '89 - I was slightly nervous about it, but hell I wrote half those songs so I certainly know how they go! It's still not 100% clear if we'll stick with the foursome (necessitated last night by a dearth from our usually healthy pool of sub drummers and bass players) but we'll see what happens. We certainly had a good time last night.

Thanks to all who came out!

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  12. Hey Musicface, the Exit live DVD is an import-only from Japan and it's a full concert from the Montreal Forum.

Okay <MR. MUSICFACE ASSUMES FULL RUSH GEEK MODE> technically speaking it's not the full concert, the DVD (which is a reissue of the 1981 video, which I do indeed have an original copy of on Betamax - my dad still has his player hooked up if anyone wants to come out to Scarborough sometime and have a Rush video fest!) includes:

    01. Limelight

    02. Tom Sawyer

    03. The Trees

    04. Xanadu

    05. Red Barchetta

    06. Freewill

    07. Closer To the Heart

    08. YYZ

    09. Medley: By-Tor & The Snow Dog / In The End / In The Mood / 2112 Finale

and does not include these tunes which were (most likely, if my Internet sources are correct) played in Montreal on the Moving Pictures tour:

    Hemispheres (i. Prelude)

    Beneath, Between and Behind

    The Camera Eye

    The Spirit of Radio

    Vital Signs

    Natural Science

    Working Man

    Hemispheres (iv. Armageddon)

    La Villa Strangiato

Interestingly, although "Limelight" is one of their better known tunes and appeared on the video, it wasn't on the LP version of Exit and wouldn't appear on a live album until Different Stages in '98.

    </RUSH GEEK MODE ENDS - FOR NOW> ;)

  13. Actually that's funny, 'cus I used to love Exit so much, but I was re-listening to it recently and I had forgotten how UN-live it sounds compared to a truly great live album like, say Live At Leeds. However the track list is nuts, it's hard to beat that. And I agree with Jaimoe that the video (which I have on, no lie, good ole Betamax!) is great, the excerpt from "By Tor" on it alone makes it worth a look.

Now, the live Rush In Rio CD and DVD that came out earlier this year is a truly superior live document. It's as LIVE sounding a live rock album as you'll hear from the last 20 years, it's actually a show as opposed to an assembly of live takes, and the Brazilian fans are just NUTS which give it huge energy. And for those who want to avoid the Geddy-voice factor, there's enough instrumental stuff (including an insane "La Villa" and decent chunks of "2112" and "Cynus") to listen for a good long time before you have to be subjected to it.
