  1. My two favorite "modern" Christmas songs have similar names but very different sentiments:

"I Believe In Father Christmas" - Greg Lake/ELP

    "Father Christmas" - The Kinks

The latter is the one with the following refrain:

Father Christmas, give us some money

Don't mess around with those silly toys.

We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over

We want your bread so don't make us annoyed

    Now that's festive! [Wink]

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  2. It was quite a show. Mercy Street was a highlight for me as well. They started it off with an a cappella vocal intro and then the members of the band sat on the outside rotating ring of the stage while Gabriel was in the middle singing. It was an amazing moment. That, The Blind Boys of Alabama doing their vocals on Sky Blue, and of course In Your Eyes were probably the musical highlights.

The "hamster ball" on Growing Up and the upside down walking by Peter and his daughter (his back-up singer on this tour) during Downside-Up were the biggest production moments. You can always count on Gabriel for these. He also had a lighted jacket for Sledgehammer and rode a bike around the stage for Solsbury Hill! While a night, indeed.

  3. Hey all!

PLEASE NOTE if you are planning to see Peter Gabriel on the current tour, viewing of this material may spoil some very interesting surprises!!!

Since it'll probably be like 2009 before we see the crazy bastard again, I couldn't resist sneaking in my wife's fancy new digital camera, complete with VIDEO capability. Wooo-hooo! So for your enjoyment, here are some sights and sounds from last night's extravaganza:

Note the file sizes for those on slower connections.

I think I got the set list more or less right, if you have any corrections please let me know.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  4. Oh, I'm gonna be there for sure! I've been waiting 8 years for this, the So and Us tours were both up there on my all-time list. Plus Blind Boys of Alabama are openning. And as bonus it's my wife's birthday, so a sweeet night all 'round! [big Grin]

If you have any doubts, go see this show and you'll be a believer. Gabriel always puts on one of the best shows you can imagine.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  5. Hey there! Uncle Seth's Discount Rock'n'Roll Emporium continues Saturday, this time with hard-hitting Brantford sons Su8ck (www.su8ck.com) and the acoustic duo of Jenn Renaud and Uncle Seth guitarist Jeff Jones starting the night off right.

Also, the Sethies have something VERY special planned for their set. I can't tell you exactly what it is, but I can say that if you're a fan of the best-selling two-disc rock concept album of all time, you won't want to miss this one...

    Reilly's Third Floor, Toronto

    Saturday November 30 2002

Uncle Seth with Su8ck and Jenn Renaud & Jeff Jones

    Doors at 9 pm, "Pay-what-you-can!"

Reilly's is at 340 Yonge, directly across from Sam The Record Man and above the Footlocker store. It's literally a few steps north of the Dundas subway stop and the Eatons Centre.

In addition to the great tunes, there's also FREE POOL all night, so come out and enjoy some cheap fun on a Saturday night!

As usual, deets can be gleaned at:

  6. Hey, so who else was at the Massey show last night? It was amazing - damnit the girl has skills! There was a lot of new stuff which was really great, I really enjoyed the last three new ones she did. Of the older stuff, I think "As Is" and "Your Next Bold Move" were the highlights for me. It was also interesting to see her sitting 'cus of her broken foot - didn't temper her frenetic delivery much!

    Anyway, a great time!

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  7. Okay, admittedly this one is a little odd, but I was totally inspired by this site:

    http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/stat/finalmeals.htm

So the question is - if you were on death row, what would your last meal be?

Personally, I'd be going high-end. Lobster, bacon rapped filet mignon, a dozen malpeque oysters, some steamed asparagus and a creme brulee to end it off. I'd also like to have a few different beers (a Hoegaarden, the wheat beer from Growlers, an Amsterdam Irish Stout, a Granite Peculiar, etc.) but at least in Texas, alcohol, cigarettes and gum (?!?) are off-limits for a last meal. [Frown] Oh well!

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

Ha, yeh I was way at the other end - very east end of Lawrence, past Port Union and the Rouge Hill GO Station. Cookie-cutter subdivision country in the 80s, although my folks had a circa late 40s place with a bit more character (they're still there, actually) so I was lucky in that regard - plus there were actual trees on my street, unlike most of those around me. But DULL - jeez, the nearest Becker's was over a mile away for god sakes, let alone anything interesting.

Drawn like moths we drift into the city

    The timeless old attraction

    Cruising for the action

    Lit up like a firefly

Oh yeh baby, that was me. Still is, in some ways. You can take the kid out of the 'burbs, but he still ends up at the mall on weekends. [Wink]

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  9. Wow, tough one! I'm going for most influential, 'cus I can't even fathom doing "favorite" straight-up.

    1) Gowan - REALLY! First concert I ever went to went to, at Ontario Place when I was 14. Whatever you think of the guy's music, he's an amazingly energetic performer. That show, probably more than any other, made me want to play myself, and not be afraid of looking like an idiot doing 'cus if you look like enough of an idiot, it's cool.

    2) Rush - Growing up a small, ugly kid in the Scarborough 'burbs, songs like "Subdivisions" where written for ME, man! I knew exactly what they were talking about. And of course, the musicianship and shows were just awesome.

    3) Springsteen - My personal entree into great singer/songwriters like Dylan, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, and later guys like John Prine & Ron Sexsmith. Songs like "Jungleland" still kill me - how can something be so wonderfully bombastic and so deeply personal at the same time? Amazing.

    4) Pink Floyd/Roger Waters - The only act everyone in my first high school band could agree we all liked, so we played them to death! I've probably listened to "The Wall" a thousand times. It was always a big debate as to whether the Gilmour-lead Floyd shows or the Waters shows were gonna be better - I think Waters has a slight edge overall at this point, but only by a hair!

    5) Blues Traveler - I might never have gotten into Phish, DMB, Widespread, The Dead, or any other bands that would make me interested in a board like this one if I hadn't heard John Popper and Chan Kinchla doing an acoustic version of "Optimistic Thought" on Q107 around Christmas 1992, and thinking "is that guy playing HARMONICA? OH MY GOD!!!" I saw BT open for the Allman's that summer at Kingswood, and there was no looking back.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  10. Hey Phishin!

My soon-to-be brother-in-law is in a similar boat, where he's got a degree and a diploma, and he's been doing techie-type jobs and hating it. His solution is to go back to his hometown of Canmore and get his certification or whatever it is he needs to be a guide at Banff. I really don't know much about the details of this, but it if it sounds like it would be up your alley I could probably find out more.

You might also be able to find some stuff on the Parks Canada site at http://parkscanada.pch.gc.ca

    Best of luck!

    - Mr. M.

  11. Hey Mike, thanks for starting this post! I totally agree that charity should be everyday, and wanted to kick in a couple of related thoughts:

    * For those of us who are on the web everyday for work and/or play, it only takes a few seconds to go to The Hunger Site and other click-to-donate-free sites. Also if you have a site of your own, why not add a link? I've had ones on the Uncle Seth site and my personal site for ages, and I know it's made lots of folks aware of these great efforts.

    * Also, at this time of year there are lots of office parties and such where there could be leftover food. If you're involved in such things, see if there's a local group that will take perishable food donations. In Toronto there's Second Harvest, and I'm sure there are similar efforts in other centres. If you've ever looked at a half-finshed tray of sandwiches and thought it shouldn't go to waste, now it doesn't have to.

    Peace,

    Mr. M.

  12. Good thanks - hey, it's Friday, what'd not to be good about?!? [big Grin]

    - Most likely going to the Rheos tonight. [big Grin]

    - Cleaning my rain gutters [Frown] and dinner with friends tomorrow. [smile]

    - Xmas recording session with Uncle Seth, members of the Kindly Ones and other local TO acts on Sunday. Seth have a pretty neat version of "O Come All Ye Faithful" ready to roll, should be a ball! [Cool]

    Have a good one, everyone!

WAIT A SEC!!!! When did Adrian Belew play with Tori Amos?!?! Why was I not informed?!? I would have paid good money to see that.

Oh, and Ms. H. & Kitari, if it's not too late (and notwithstanding Brad's excellent comments, which I quite agree with) here's something that I like to do for a larf:

    1) Go to a web page with some "important" text in it - say a posted message from the CEO of your company if work is pissing you off, for instance.

    2) Copy the URL.

    3) Paste said URL into this page: http://www.rinkworks.com/dialect/

    4) Select your dialect (I'm personally fond of Elmer Fudd) and let'er rip!

    Peace,

    Mr. M.
